Baby It's Cold Outside

Freezing rain, sleet and snow will fall along the Southeast on Wednesday -- and lead the way for a brutal winter storm that is expected to strengthen rapidly as it moves toward the Northeast. It could be the first time in years that some portions of the Southeast have snow. Residents in Tallahassee, Florida, are expecting up to an inch of snow and ice on Wednesday, but the city has not had measurable snowfall since 1989, said CNN meteorologist Michael Guy. Gov. Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency Tuesday for 28 Georgia counties in the coastal region ahead of the storm. Authorities are urging people to stay home as millions of people in the eastern half of the US face below and near freezing temperatures Wednesday. Many schools canceled classes and government offices closed across the Florida panhandle and along the entire east coast shoreline.

That ain't no ---. It was 14°F this morning here in Central Texas. It was so cold I had to put on pants.

Damned wimps.

Our cold spell came early this year, I hope this isn't the trend for the rest of January.

I notice that Donald Trump hasn't prevented it from getting cold this year or the year last.

It was up to 1 this morning and then dropped to 4 below at 7:30 and back to 1 at 8:30. We have a norester tomorrow dropping a foot of snow with 40mph winds then night time temps predicted on Sat at 20 below. It has been relentless here in Maine but we will survive just fine.

I am having frozen rain(?) now not snow yet. There are ice pellets on the grass and in my bird feeder. They say snow after lunch. I am craving a cheese omelette. Do I have eggs and cheese? No. Nothing worse then wanting something and not being able to get it because my Florida car and flip flops don't do frozen rain!

Here in central Illinois, woke up New Year's Day and it was -16 and the high was supposed to be 0.

#11 | Posted by Pirate at 2018-01-03 10:53 AM

It snowed in Miami, FL for the first time in recorded history on January 19, 1977.

Snowflakes....

Either [sic] has global warming.

Polar Vortex winds normally confine freezing arctic temperatures to higher latitudes. However, warming in the arctic has weakened said winds, allowing cold arctic air to move south.

So, global warming is actually contributing to the weather anomalies the Southeast U.S. is experiencing.

Going to be a chilly 70 today with cloudy skies, the only good thing about Ca. is the weather.

If you don't know yet that climate change causes extremes in heat AND EXTREMES IN COLD you're too stupid to comment here. And that's saying something.

Get out of trump country and go to the coast. California is great away from the inbred reaganites.

Come on y'all have to admit that #13 | Posted by AndreaMackris was funny...

Air warms. The ice melts. Melting ice fills the air with moisture. Cold wind freezes the the moisture. It snows on your dumb self. Rinse. Repeat.

Not understanding climate change is a complete failure of public education.

#19 | Posted by lee_the_agent at 2018-01-03 12:10 PM

Public education is an oxymoron.

No rain in Southern CA yet this year :-( I did have to finally wear an actual jacket after leaving it in the closet for years.

This has been explained ad nauseam to no one's benefit. All you can do is lead a horse to water.

Think of extreme weather like bicycle pedals.

when one goes all the way down the other goes all the way up.

---- Shaming Headline Alert!

66 degrees and cloudy here in LA.

#26 | Posted by Rightocenter at 2018-01-03 01:37 PM

It's been pretty brutal here.

Not so much the cold (used to that from my childhood in upstate NY), more the oscillations.

Multiple days the past week where it was frigid (single digits) with a slight warming (into the 20s) followed by a day where the nightly low was that days high with a plummet back to 0 or so.

Looks like that's going to be the next week's pattern too.

#27 | Posted by jpw at 2018-01-03 02:06 PM

I just returned from -25 degrees in Minnesota to sunny San Diego.

My cheeks still burn from the bitter cold. Should have taken the advice of my girlfriend's father: "Shovel the snow in spurts of no more than 2 minutes."

My manliness got the best of me and now my cheeks are paying the price.

#28 | Posted by rstybeach11 at 2018-01-03 02:37 PM

#26 That's funny. RCADE Changed the headline! :-)

#29 | Posted by gracieamazed at 2018-01-03 03:35 PM

Sorry it's so cold back east but I hear you got a whole lot more coming. Hang in there!

Moving to the North Coast of California seems like a brilliant move this week! But climate change is twicksie.

We are still not getting our rains and if we don't get good and wet this year will be dryer than last. And last fire season set numerous wildfire records. People are still recovering. So freezing to death or burning to death. 🤔

Well you can run from fires so there is that at least. Earthquakes on the other hand...really suck. And unfortunately we are due.

#30 | Posted by donnerboy at 2018-01-03 07:25 PM

You know you are in trouble when they name the weather you about to get a "winter cyclone bomb".

#31 | Posted by donnerboy at 2018-01-03 07:50 PM

It's a Nor'easter. and they've been worse than this. Winter cyclone bomb is to hype it up like it's never happened before.
