An abandoned newborn child in good health was found Saturday afternoon in the women's rest room in the Interstate 75 rest stop at Mile Marker 343, according to a press release from the Marion County Sheriff's Office. According to MCSO Public Information Officer Valerie Strong, the white male infant was "found by a civilian" and deputies responded to the rest stop in the 11400 block of Southwest I-75 at 3:14 p.m.
A "Safe Haven" law was enacted in Florida to eliminate the tragedies resulting in the abandonment of newborn babies. This law allows parents to leave their unharmed newborn babies, who are not more than one week old, with an employee at any hospital, emergency medical services station or with a fire fighter at any fire station in Florida, Strong stated.
