Trump Admin Tries to Take Credit for 5% UN Budget Cut

The Trump administration said Sunday that the United Nations budget has been reduced for the coming year, and it framed any cuts as the product of U.S. negotiation. "Among a host of other successes, the United States negotiated a reduction of over $285 million off the 2016-2017 final budget," the United States Mission to the U.N. said in a press release. ... A United Nations spokesman confirmed to NPR the reduction in the budget, and said the total U.N. budget for 2018-2019 is $5.396 billion. But cuts to the U.N. budget are typical: The 2016-2017 budget was roughly $400 million lower than the final appropriations for 2014-2015, which was 2.9 percent lower than the previous biennium's budget.

That's about a 25% cut in US support.

I wonder if it means we're really giving zero dollars toward the UN? As in the 75% remaining is spent to pay ourselves.

Next step is to cut off aid to that cabal of Eurocrats and corrupt 3rd world, anti-semitic, anti-American dictatorships.

It's actually a 5% cut. And we should cut more. Like cut the back to Geneva. Why the United States is funding an Anti-U.S. organization is beyond me.

You show your ignorance daily. You have no clues as to what you're talking about or the ramifications on what you want to happen. You obviously aren't a thinking man.

Laura,

If you are going to contribute to the conversation, then do it, otherwise, troll somewhere else please.

It's not a cut to the US payment %, it is a lowering of the Total UN Budget; Every country is going to be saving a little money. The article does indicate that they're looking for other ways of cutting funds to the UN.

Rereading it, you're right about the total cut for the budget.

I thought the US was cutting their contribution by that much. Instead, they're asking for a cut on the total budget.

I wonder how much less or more the US will pay?

Not trolling just stating facts is all. I'm sorry that you can't understand them.

Convert the UN building into office and affordable housing space. The UN bureaucrats can party in Brussels or Saudia Arabia.

en.wikipedia.org

A study by the RAND Corporation in 2005 found the UN to be successful in two out of three peacekeeping efforts. It compared efforts at nation-building by the UN to those of the United States, and found that seven out of eight UN cases are at peace, as compared with four out of eight US cases at peace

#8 except she's right.

You're proudly ignorant. Usually quite stupid as well, easily taken by ridiculous ‘Murcia! type nonsense like this.

Name a country or civilization that stood alone against the world and didn't fall. You're a fool if you think the US can cede global leadership to the Chinese and Russians while maintaining its prominence.

#17 | Posted by jpw at 2017-12-26 02:52 PM

You're doubly a fool if you don't see the pattern developing. Schisms are being opened in our relationship with allies and global bodies. Who do you think benefits most from that?

God damned righties are stupid piles of dog s@%&.

This is good. I prefer conflicts being resolved at the cost of dead soldiers. It improves the gene pool.

Israel first. Why should we pay for their free health care?

And who created those "schisms"? Liberals like yourself all of a sudden think we should suck up to everyone in the UN because this administration is cutting funding while at the same time call it dangerous when we try to work to repair those ties. Try to at least be somewhat consistent.

#21 | Posted by fishpaw at 2017-12-27 10:55 AM

Suck up is not the same as not being a bunch of insufferable antagonistic hypocrites.

#22 | Posted by BruceBanner at 2017-12-27 11:38 AM

"In their campaign to delegitimize Israel, member states at the U.N. pass endless resolutions targeting the Jewish state, while ignoring real-world atrocities that the U.N. was founded to help prevent. Starvation in Venezuela goes unnoticed. Genocide in Syria and Yemen is ignored. The Iranian regime's gross violation of international law doesn't raise an eyebrow. Yet half of U.N. Human Rights Council resolutions target Israel, and more than 85 percent of U.N. General Assembly resolutions go after Israel too."

The inconsistency exists in your head.

Improving relations with Russia or China doesn't mean electing a sycophantic moron. (BTW when did the right become so keen on those relationships? Oh yeah, once dotard got in office and they had to fall in line)

It's certainly not a good idea to try and improve those relationships while alienating everyone else, from NATO to the U.N., is it?

So no, it's not the "liberals" creating the schisms, it's DOTUS and his mouth breathing sycophantic followers who can't see beyond cheerleading for DOTUS and actually trying to consider the possible results from his actions. Nope. It's do as he says so you can "win".

Which is precisely why I say you're stupid.
