Video Release of Arizona Shooting by Police

Black Lives Matter activists were among those who used social media on Friday and Saturday to call attention to the case of Daniel Shaver, a 26-year-old man who was shot to death by a police officer in Mesa, Arizona in January 2016. A disturbing, graphic video of the shooting was released shortly after the officer who killed Shaver, who was white, was acquitted of second-degree murder. The video shows Shaver following the officer's instructions to crawl toward him and begging him not to shoot. Radley Balko: "The insanely heavy-handed police response to Daniel Shaver came after someone reported seeing him with a rifle. (it was a pellet gun). Arizona is open carry, including for long guns. So the NRA will denounce this verdict and demand better training for Mesa police, right?"

When the NRA has made sure that any american can be carrying a lethal device at any time, cops have to treat every person like they're carrying a lethal device.

Cops in other countries don't even need guns.

All the cop shootings are just one more terrible result of terrible policies.

I spent some time looking for the justification of this tragic execution.

What I found was:
www.cnn.com

..."While it's a compete tragedy, he's comforted by the fact that his response was in view with the way he was trained," [the police officer's lawyer,] Piccarreta said....

So the reason for the acquittal, according to the officer's lawyer was that he was trained to do what he did, i.e., he was just following orders.

Which means that we will see more executions such as this one.

Anyone else agree with BLM that Police need better training?

I believe this is the same shooting where the video was purposefully withheld from the jury/public until AFTER the verdict was rendered! If so, it was a serious miscarriage of justice because there is documented proof of what happened rather than just the officer's testimony.

Body cams are the gift that keeps giving.

Zero convictions, but just look at the wonderful snuff film this one gave the -----------.

A few people who post here will have sticky keyboards again this morning.

The civil suit will come, and the city will seriously regret the withholding of evidence. I predict a marvelous payday for attorneys and victims! Teachers will be cut, roads will be in disrepair, etc.

A deadly version of Simon says. Shocked he didn't shoot the other officer for his inability to use a hotel key card appropriately. When the other officer dropped the card I thought it was over for him as well.

In all sincerity this is disgusting and depressing.

And what should happen, John? Nothing? Everyone should just go home?

Or here is an alternate idea: the City cleans up its department. Just a thought.

Did you just read my name and begin barking, or did you read my post? My post implied the local cops and jurists are corrupt, and there will be a great payday for the victims after a civil suit, at the expense of many other things the city could have bought with the collected taxes. Insurance, you say? If the insurance eats enough lawsuits, the municipality become uninsurable.

My God, that is just horrendous. Absolutely no excuse. The cop is screaming his damned head off over nothing, and the poor shmuck, half-drunk most likely, is trying to comply and is executed on the spot. Outrageous.

Professional criminals know better - attorney will always advise their clients to drop to the floor and then just lay face down with your arms out stretch and play dead - don't move for ANY reason.

Never move or come to the cops - just lay there and don't move. Cops HAVE to come to them.

Cops are trained not to shoot as there have been dozens of cases where they went to prison if they did. Cops ALWAYS try to get you to come to them so they can legally shoot if they decide to.

Only people being shot are the mentally ill, children and middle class whites who have little interaction with law enforcement.

If the insurance eats enough lawsuits, the municipality become uninsurable.

NOPE, they just raise residential property taxes. Just the price of doing business.
