Don't Buy an Amazon Echo, Google Home or an Apple HomePod

Actually, it is a big deal. The newfound privacy conundrum presented by installing a device that can literally listen to everything you're saying represents a chilling new development in the age of internet-connected things. By buying a smart speaker, you're effectively paying money to let a huge tech company surveil you. And I don't mean to sound overly cynical about this, either. Amazon, Google, Apple, and others say that their devices aren't spying on unsuspecting families. The only problem is that these gadgets are both hackable and prone to bugs.

I know... I know..... If you don't have anything to hide, why would you care......

Why, in the name of all that is holy, would anyone want something that can hear every word you say in the "privacy" of your home and communicate that to the web? Is there any reason you should trust Jeff Bezos? Just to have the newest, flashiest thing?

Do you have a cell phone? They are smart mics as well. And yes they can be turned on remotely.

"Wiretap, turn the living room lights off."

*But then we can't see you"

"Wait, what?"

Hey Siri, take a long walk off a short pier, ok? and don't come back.

I personally like my Google home. I don't say anything that interesting really, not worried about it.
