Electrician Foils Employer's GPS Tracking with Snack Bag

A Faraday cage, named for 19th century scientist Michael Faraday, effectively blocks electromagnetic fields. Faraday found that an enclosure -- or, in this case, the foil-lined interior of the cheesy corn snack bag -- can keep these charges out if there's enough conductive material. It appears [Tom] Colella, 60, had slipped his company-mandated, GPS-enabled personal digital assistant into the bag to block the signals that enabled the device to track his movements. "As an experienced electrician, Mr. Colella knew that this bag would work as a [Faraday] cage, thereby preventing the PDA from working properly -- especially the provision of regular GPS co-ordinate updates," Fair Work Commissioner Bernie Riordan said in his decision.

Which begs the question, why do they work when put inside a steel bumper by the police?

Why not just turn it off?

You'll be fired. It's for companies to make sure employees don't wander off while on the clock like this guy did.

Because a steel bumper is a ferrous (magnetic) material while Aluminum isn't.

The reason it works in steel bumpers but not the bag is the bumper does not completely surround the GPS unit. The bumper will only block signals from the side it covers, while the open side can still receive.

I don't think this work on my company vehicle. They just plugged Geotab into my OEM plug on my company truck. It transmits through cellular signal. I could keep it from transmitting but I cant keep it from recording.

This was shown in the movie 'Enemy of The State' where paranoiac (or maybe not) Gene Hackman something similar to defeat tracking devices. Moral of the story: go to the movies more often...

#11 It will have a box that relays the signal by Bluetooth or WiFi, if you unplug the box it can't record (our steel plant building also acts as a Faraday cage fyi). They will know something is wrong with it though, the ones I work with if it isn't getting a signal, I can see it on the Administration side that it's not working.

If I unplug the box, I'm toast.

I'm guessing he misses the paycheck but not the job.

#14 With butter.... Park it in a steel garage Lmao.... Ok don't really do that, but that works also.. Where I work it's a fireable offense, if you mess with it. Especially since ours are ELD's, and that's considered fraudulent logging.

Moral of the story, leave your cell phone on the job site come back later and pick it up.

#17 | Posted by danni at 2017-12-01 09:42 AM

Or just not sneak off the job.

When a county here first installed GPS units on the patrol cars, a few deputies would cover the GPS antenna with aluminum foil during their shifts.

Employers should look up post history on this DR and have solid justification for firing most of you slackers for goldbricking.
