Flake Won't Seek Re-Election

Condemning the nastiness of Republican politics in the era of President Donald Trump, Sen. Jeff Flake on Tuesday announced he will serve out the remainder of his term but will not seek re-election in 2018. The bombshell, which Flake, R-Ariz., detailed Tuesday afternoon on the Senate floor, will further roil Republican hopes of keeping the party's 52-seat Senate majority in the midterm elections of Trump's first term, when the president's party historically loses seats in Congress. ... Flake, one of the Senate's more prominent critics of President Donald Trump, has been struggling in the polls. He told The Arizona Republic ahead of his announcement that he has become convinced "there may not be a place for a Republican like me in the current Republican climate or the current Republican Party."

More

"Here's the bottom line: The path that I would have to travel to get the Republican nomination is a path I'm not willing to take, and that I can't in good conscience take," Flake told The Republic in a telephone interview. "It would require me to believe in positions I don't hold on such issues as trade and immigration and it would require me to condone behavior that I cannot condone."

You have identified the GOP's problem in a nutshell: they are letting Trump (and Bannon) define the Republican party. Why is it a choice between Trump and Democrats and liberals? Why not a choice between Trump and non-crazy conservatives?

That's because billionaires have rotted your brain with propaganda, that you now think having putin's treasonous puppet, a dangerous unstable sociopathic megalomaniac narcissist manchild, is better than a sane responsible democrat.

Boaz's extremely childish, myopic views aren't normal, even among Repubs.

Hell, most Repubs here on the DR (the one's worth listening to, at least) don't even share them and, even if the concepts are similar, their opinions are far more fleshed out, nuanced and supported.

I know I'm being overly harsh, but it fries my ass when people claim to represent "America" or "real Americans", an opinion that beautifully encapsulates the simple, shallow level of thinking typically exhibited by people making the claim.

The Democrats do not have the power to stop the republicans from doing anything in congress

Any problems right now in Washington are purely republican problems.

The Democrats don't have to do anything except sit back and watch the republican party's different factions argue loudly about how badly to screw America.

"Flake, who won with 49 percent of the vote in 2012, has seen his popularity in Arizona sink. A Morning Consult poll in July found just 37 percent of voters in his home state approving of the job he's doing."

Since he was probably going to lose the primary to Ward, he floated some trial balloons about running as an independent, but that went nowhere.

Trump fully intended from the get-go to repair that relationship.

I don't believe there was any 'collusion' for world domination, or to allow Russia to operate the United States.

I answered in #65. I'm speculating, just like you, because neither of us know for certain.
The difference is that i'm not wildly speculating.

Did Trump want to repair the relationship with Russia? Yes, I believe so.

Why? Go ahead and tell us what your crystal ball says.

Why does Trump want the US to have a relationship with Russia?

#74 | Posted by SheepleSchism

You don't need a crystal ball.

Why has trump done ANYTHING, EVER?

For glory, sex, or money.

NEVER because it helps his fellow countrymen or the international community.

"Let's wait for the findings.

Until then, stop engaging in wild speculation and mass hysteria."

You are such a nincompoop.

The "findings" are everywhere. You are just refusing to read and understand them apparently.

I recommend for you that you find a copy of the book Fantasyland, How America Went Haywire, by Kurt Andersen and read it and get back to me with what you think is going on after you read about the 500 years of history leading up to where we are today in America.

Flake?

Duh. He's a republican. And a mormon.

WHich means he probably has a long history of voting for theocracy, environmental destruction, tax cuts for the rich, corporate abuse of workers, and service cuts for the poor.

#79 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2017-10-24 07:49 PM

Flake is worthless, and so is corker. See, they're not gonna stay on and fight trump in any meaningful way or caucus with the democrats to impeach or slow down Trump. No, they're just insulting and pretending they're better than trump then quitting. Losers!

#80 | Posted by Alexandrite at 2017-10-24 07:56 PM

Republicans love the uneducated. Flake can walk up to the podium, and talk smack about Donnie "Small Hands" - get all this attention. Dude's voting record is 89.8%** in line with the POTUS*...say one thing, do another, lie about it, suckers eat it up. Suckerssssss!

**Of course, 100% lockstep is the norm, so...

#81 | Posted by chuffy at 2017-10-24 08:16 PM

The republican party is disgusting. They all know Flake is accurate in everything he said, but they have to pretend trump is sane because they're afraid of his moronic base.

The only time a republican can speak the truth to the base is when they no longer need those base votes.

In fact, offending a mass of ignorant morons should be a badge of pride.

#82 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2017-10-24 08:19 PM

So then, you're speculating and projecting. It would be better to admit that you have no idea.

"I don't know what he's up to, but it must be something nefarious" is your position.

And since there are no indictments to date, I can deduce that Mueller hasn't seen them either.

I thought his 'base' was some 9% minority? Why pander to two trailer parks in Kansas?

#85 | Posted by SheepleSchism at 2017-10-24 08:42 PM

Brilliant uplifting speech, from another Republican, utterly disgusted with Trump, no less.

#86 | Posted by bayviking at 2017-10-24 09:16 PM

Drumpfies constitute at least 28% of the voting public. That is about the guaranteed, "Will vote for Charles Manson as long as he's a Republican" base. Don't know where your 9% figure comes from...

And since there are no indictments to date, I can deduce that Mueller hasn't seen them either. Talk like that will come back to you in time. From what we're seeing currently, it will not be much longer.

#87 | Posted by chuffy at 2017-10-24 09:40 PM

How many indictments did we see with HRC and Obama? Talk about projection...

#88 | Posted by chuffy at 2017-10-24 09:41 PM

"I don't know what he's up to, but it must be something nefarious" is your position.

#83 | Posted by SheepleSchism

And "He's always acted selfishly and destructively in the past, but lets give him the benefit of the doubt" is yours.

Ignoring evidence and historical trends makes you as stupid as any climate change denier.

#89 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2017-10-24 09:42 PM

#84 | Posted by SheepleSchism

Then you suck at deducing things.

"Gosh the prosecutor in the worlds biggest scandal case hasn't revealed everything to the public yet, therefore there must not be anything to reveal!"

Idiot.

How is Flake a RINO, given he has a 93.07% lifetime conservative voting record (11th highest in the Senate, just behind Sessions) according to the American Conservative Union? acuratings.conservative.org What the f--- does someone have to do to be "conservative" enough for you folks?

Lol at suckers who rant ad nauseum about Russia's quaint attempts at manipulation but who have nothing to say about decades of corporate media manipulation. Corporate influence over our government has done us real harm, unlike Russia. You are still being manipulated and you seem quite content about it, which is why your Russia rants are comical.

Nope.

Hillary Clinton received votes in every one of the 3,142 counties and county-equivalents in the United States, including Texas's King County.

You're just too stupid to understand that, "cpl." boazo

Russia isn't running our country. The concept has been born of mass hysteria fueled by a biased MSM.

If it's not, why hasn't the Russian sanctions overwhelmingly approved by Congress been enacted by Putin's bitch?
