Stephen Hawking's Thesis Crashes Cambridge Site

Interest in "Properties of Expanding Universes" is at an all-time high: Stephen Hawking's doctoral thesis of that name crashed Cambridge University's open-access repository on the first day the document was posted online. The Cambridge Library made several PDF files of the thesis available for download from its website, from what it called a high-resolution "72 Mb" file to a digitized version that is less than half that file size. A "reduced" version was offered that was even smaller -- but intense interest overwhelmed the servers. By late Monday local time, the well-known theoretical physicist's thesis had been viewed more than 60,000 times, says Stuart Roberts, deputy head of research communications at Cambridge. He added, "Other popular theses might have 100 views per month." After what a Cambridge Open Access official called unprecedented interest, the library's servers seemed to be coping with the load better on Tuesday.

I read most of this thing. You know, he is a smart fellow.

If he's so smart, how come he never won a Nobel Prize like Barack Obama?

#3 | Posted by nullifidian at 2017-10-24 05:18 PM

He looks like he smells. Just sayin.

Wow, what a surprise, right-wingers are hostile to scientific achievement itself.

Some progressive hipsters will print out a copy and display it on their living room table, along with Oprah, Ms., Mother Jones, The Atlantic, New York Times, Teen Vogue, etc.

#3 | POSTED BY NULLIFIDIAN

Because his work is almost entirely theoretical physics and therefore unverifiable whereas Barack Obama was the first Black president in a country that was still desegregating schools in the 80's.

If you're so smart, why do you post such dumb stuff?

Hawking is a goofball that everyone would treat like the crazy uncle in the attic if it wasn't for his disability. He is always making crazy pronuncements that have no scientific backing.

Moron calls genius a crazy goofball.

You're really committing to this whole stupidity thing arent you?

#9 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2017-10-24 05:44 PM

He's probably a genius, but nobody really knows because they have no clue what he's talking about.

#10 | Posted by SheepleSchism at 2017-10-24 05:59 PM

Hawking and his partner in BBT crime Roger Penrose shared the 1988 Wolf Prize for physics for their contribution to our understanding of the universe.

Penrose also wrote important papers...

"The importance of Penrose's epoch-making paper "Gravitational collapse and space-time singularities"[6] was not only its result (roughly that if an object such as a dying star implodes beyond a certain point, then nothing can prevent the gravitational field getting so strong as to form some kind of singularity).

It also showed a way to obtain similarly general conclusions in other contexts, notably that of the cosmological Big Bang, which he dealt with in collaboration with Dennis Sciama's most famous student, Stephen Hawking.

It was in the local context of gravitational collapse that the contribution of Penrose was most decisive, starting with his 1969 cosmic censorship conjecture, to the effect that any ensuing singularities would be confined within a well-behaved event horizon surrounding a hidden space-time region for which Wheeler coined the term black hole, leaving a visible exterior region with strong but finite curvature, from which some of the gravitational energy may be extractable by what is known as the Penrose process, while accretion of surrounding matter may release further energy that can account for astrophysical phenomena such as quasars."

Hawking turned out to be the sexy one, though, I guess.

You think his disability is why people think he is a genius? You are talking about a guy who can do calculus in his head.

I believe in the D&D theory of humanity. Everyone starts with the same amount of points. for some people all the points are used up in physicality. They don't have any left for intelligence.

Some people are beautiful and smart but complete -------- because they ran out of points for empathyetc

Almost all of Hawking's points went into his brain and he used up a bunch on being a good person too.

--Moron calls genius a crazy goofball.

He's a genius at a very technical, highly specialized field of mathematics. Doesn't make his opinions on anything else worth squat, like his blather that humanity has to leave the planet within 1000 years. What orofice did he pull that out of? Why 1000? Why not 500? Or 100?

Provide a link to the quote and I expect the answer will be in there, and it probably involves some math.

When morons don't understand something, the first thing they do is say there is no answer.

Actually Hawking's true genius is taking highly specialized mathematics and translating the concepts into layman's English. But to your point; that's exactly why its still accurate to say Ben Carson is a complete idiot, despite having a steady hand in the surgery room.

#15 | Posted by IndianaJones at 2017-10-24 07:02 PM

Most of us WILL leave the planet in less than 100 years.

you can't write a better stereotype for the idiot american than null in real life.
dotard extraordinaire.

#17 | Posted by klifferd at 2017-10-24 11:20 PM

his first statement was a meant at irony.
Fail.

Obama won a peace prize, not a prize in physics. As of yet, there doesn't exist any way to test Hawking's theories practically.

second statement was meant to mock hawking's musings.
Fail.

Hawking is a very whimsical character, but dotard is stuck on the computer voice, being the true jerkface he is. Thus he takes Hawking's wit as serious positions.

third statement was meant to redefine 'genius'
Fail.

Hawking isn't autistic. He isn't an idiot savant. He's a genius. Meaning that he has a mind capable of more complex abstract thinking. Thus making him more than adequately apply his intelligence beyond the realm of study he focused on in university decades ago.

You do realize your saying he won it because he is black and got voted President. No other reason, nice one Toady.

You know what they say about opinions and a__ holes right.... Everyone has one and they all stink. So Hawking's opinion outside of he's expertise is like everyone else's it smells like s--t, genius or not.

I seem to recall Obama missing 20 of 22 free throws. In order for Obama to beat Hawking at horse he has to first make a shot.

"...whereas Barack Obama was the first Black president in a country that was still desegregating schools in the 80's."

Goes to show that giving Nobel prizes too early can backfire. He spent all 8 years after winning the prize trying to segregate America again. Race relations have devolved over the last 8 years because of him.

No, journalists and the public substitute compassion for critical thinking in his case. He pontificates about stuff totally out of his field of expertise and people gobble it down like it was the Sermon on the Mount. He exemplifies the "Nobel Disease" if he hasn't won one.

Nullifidian, look at where we are now. An enterprise the size and complexity of a starship capable of moving a large humans, given our interpersonal idiocy and squabbling, cannot be done. Frankly, that we managed to get an idiot to the scale of Trumpleforeskin into the White House may be a non-trivial miracle.
