Following Tuesday's deadly collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, some Republican officials, candidates and right-wing pundits attempted to connect the tragedy to some of their most frequent political targets: diversity initiatives, illegal immigration, coronavirus lockdowns and the Biden administration. read more

Russia has intensified its online efforts to derail military funding for Ukraine in the United States and Europe, largely by using harder-to-trace technologies to amplify arguments for isolationism ahead of the U.S. elections, according to disinformation experts and intelligence assessments. read more

Just hours after Donald Trump made it clear on Truth Social that he intends to continue delegitimizing democracy in 2024 if he doesn't win, The Washington Post published a story on the Republican National Committee's alarming criterion for new hires. The report solidifies what's been the fears of election administrators across the U.S. as they gear up for the 2024 election - that the violence and intimidation that came along with Trump's 2020 election denialism will return in full force, and with a vengeance. read more

Michael Areceneaux: According to a report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2022, as many as 44.2 million people lived in households that had difficulty getting enough food to feed everyone - an increase from 33.8 million the year prior - and that figure included more than 13 million children facing food insecurity. Congress actually did something to try to directly aid children suffering from this national shame. Regrettably, more than 15 Republican governors have said that they will turn down federal money to feed low-income children. read more

President Joe Biden's campaign on Monday released an unusually blunt statement tearing into Donald Trump as "feeble, confused, and tired" after an appearance marked by verbal stumbles as well as a bizarre social media post in which he likened himself to Christ. "He spent the weekend golfing, the morning comparing himself to Jesus, and the afternoon lying about having money he definitely doesn't have," the statement said. read more

Conservative political candidates and right-wing media personalities have turned to blaming diversity, equity and inclusion policies a loosely defined term broadly used to refer to efforts to diversify the workforce and academia - for the collapse. It's the latest in a series of issues that the right has blamed on DEI.
And to answer to such prejudicial drivel is the mayor of Baltimore:
Baltimore Mayor Taunts Right-Wing Trolls With Brutally Honest New 'DEI' Definition'

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott provided a new meaning for the acronym "DEI" after conservative critics linked him to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in response to the deadly Francis Scott Key bridge collapse.

"I know and we know and you know very well that Black men, and young Black men in particular, have been the bogeyman for those who are racist and think that only straight, wealthy white men should have a say in anything," said Scott.

He continued, "We've been the bogeyman for them since the first day they brought us to this country and what they mean by DEI' in my opinion is 'duly elected incumbent'."

Scott was elected with "70% of the vote" back in 2020 by a city with a predominantly Black population.

"So by right-wing logic, a diversity hire,' would have been a white man," Reid said.

Scott later told Reid that he knows what those critics "want to say."

"But they don't have the courage to say the N-word and the fact that I don't believe in their untruthful and wrong ideology and I am very proud of my heritage and who I am and where I come from, scares them," Scott said.

He continued, "Because me being at my position means that their way of thinking, their way of life of being comfortable while everyone else suffers is going to be at risk and they should be afraid because that's my purpose in life."

This man is going places in the future.

"Stop the Steal" is malleable and flexible. It's the Big Lie of the 2020. It's the Big Lie of 2024, too, with Trump already seeking to delegitimize any election he doesn't win. It can mean the bogus "election interference" he is now claiming.

In trotting it out again in 2024, Trump is showing his defiance in the same way he does when praising the Jan. 6 defendants as hostages, continuing to insist he won in 2020, and wearing the Jan. 6 attack as a badge of honor.

This is what we're up against.

And may this become the hill upon which Trump insures his own defeat. There are many Republicans who despise or dislike Joe Biden but also understand that January 6th was a tragedy, an abomination, and an international embarassment that should never be revisited. Hopefully enough of these people will either hold their nose and support the candidate trying to save our democracy or at minimum refuse to cast a ballot in support of the coup-fomenting leader of the insurrection against the United States Constitution and the rule of law.

Definitely a headline fail. People do not die of starvation in this country.

No headline fail, just reality. Would you please STFU you ignorant fool!

U.S. Malnutrition Deaths Have More Than Doubled

April 13, 2023

The same trend occurred nationwide, with malnutrition deaths more than doubling, from about 9,300 deaths in 2018 to roughly 20,500 in 2022, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I've never seen someone so obsessed with proving that they know so very little about things they pontificate about.

Some have given reasons, dumb as they may sound. Like Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, who said she saw no need for the extra money for hungry kids "when childhood obesity has become an epidemic."

I suppose I should not be surprised that the person who endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for president could sound so empty and evil in her thinking.

Other Republican governors, as The Washington Post noted in its story about the GOP pushback on helping fight child hunger in America, were even more blunt.

"I don't believe in welfare," Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen explained when asked why he rejected the money.

Pillen ultimately changed his mind after Nebraska state Sen. Jen Day, a Democrat, introduced a bill to require participation and found a Republican ally as well as a swell of support from voters in rural areas.

It was a mistake to not use political capital to pressure Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) into supporting the continued expansion of the child tax credit, which cut child poverty in half.

It would be another mistake to allow Republicans - and their Democrat-when-convenient friend - to wield their power to hurt American children. If Republicans could falsely brand Democrats as "groomers," they should be branded as pro-child starvation.

WWJD? Obviously, stop the federal government from providing food to hungry children, naturally.

Sometimes conservative politics is akin to an intentionally cognitive dissonant mental disease, totally devoid of empathy and compassion. At other times - like this - it's also abject cruelty and forced suffering thrust onto the backs of those already struggling to merely stand up from the weight of life's burdens placed upon them, many times beyond their personal control.

There is no reason that every person espousing real morality shouldn't fight for Americans struggling to feed themselves and their families. And state leaders who refuse to allow federal government assistance to reach these children and families should be personally shamed and shunned for the barbarism such humane indifference reflects.

Well, that was quick:

NBC reverses decision to hire Ronna McDaniel after on-air backlash

Amid a chorus of on-air protest from some of the network's biggest stars, NBC announced on Tuesday night that former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel will no longer be joining the network as a paid contributor.

NBC employees argued publicly and privately that their complain was not with McDaniel's party affiliation but with her actions.

The company's on-air personalities - especially those on NBC's liberal-leaning cable affiliate MSNBC - disagreed vehemently, saying that McDaniel's promotion of Donald Trump's media-bashing and false election-fraud claims disqualified her for a role in their news divisions.

New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan's order says Trump is not allowed to speak about prosecutors working on the hush money case under Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, or their family members, although he is permitted to target Bragg himself in social media posts or campaign speeches. Trump is also prohibited from speaking about members of Merchan's staff and their families - though there does not appear to be any prohibition on speech about the judge or his relatives.

The decision was issued hours after Trump attacked Merchan's daughter on social media because of her affiliation with a company that works on campaigns for Democratic candidates.

Merchan's order also aims to protect jurors or prospective jurors, who will be summoned to the courthouse at the start of the trial. Trump is barred from "making or directing others to make public statements about any prospective juror or any juror in this criminal proceeding," the order said.

Can anyone imagine if every high-profile trial had a defendant who acted just like Trump does - publicly criticizing or attacking the public servants simply doing the jobs they were hired to do in service of the People?

Trump has now normalized his impetuous sociopathic vulgar behavior, something far more harmful to our society given his history of both stoking and cheering-on violent public responses by those believing his self-serving cries and lamentations. I applaud this judge in his substantive ruling, noting the amount of violent or threatening acts recent justice workers and staff have been subjected to. And it's so sad that a person who placed their hand on a bible and swore to defend our constitutional dictates and processes attack those whom he's supposed to protect and support - keeping faith that our legal processes usually arrive at fair and just adjudications as our Founders desired.
