What the fuck have you been snorting? 7+ years of the war crimials Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice and you want to try to tell me that Republicans are so excellent at national security? Everything they've touched has shown us nothing but how to FUBAR this or that particular situation. We're FAR less safe than prior to anything done since 9/11 to fight terror( don't even get me started on why you can't have a war on "terror"). The military was really fucked up in Vietnam, take it from someone that knows. If either Dems or Repubs had been smarter they'd have done away with the One Year Plan for deployments, it would have saved many American lives and ended that war sooner. Now Bush has attempted to prosecute two wars at the same time, on the cheap and gone back to that silly crap of one year(or 15 months). At least in Vietnam if you survived your year you got to go home to stay. Bring back the draft NOW and allow no Cheney-style "I had other priorities" deferments. At least in Vietnam if you survived your year you got to go home to stay.

There were also alot more people in Vietnam as compared to these wars. That is why you could sometimes do shorter rotations. The gutting that Clinton did has made it so we cant do rotations like in vietnam.

i have some mixed fealings about this. being a ww2 guy
(when real men fought lagitimate wars) and thinking about the things that they saw and kept fighting thru.
it might boil down to the fact that we baby our children so much that when there adults, they find them selves doing something they don't want to do they'll just find a way out. if our military were to fight the battle of the bulge now they would be slaughtered. could you imagine our troops sleeping in a ditch in the middle of winter without supplies, beds, tents and spy satellites. there were no excuses back then.

There were a lot more in uniform after they began drafting seriously for the war in Vietnam beginning sometime around 1964-5. Prior to that we didn't have available ground forces to do that. If was a stupid way to run a war, just like this war is being run stupidly. I'm amazed that no soldier has publicly bitch slapped Rumsfeld.

Trying to figure out why some things make a soldier non deployable while other things don't would be futile! It's the same with a battalion being "battle ready". They just don't make sense.

Many people are caught up in the romanticism of joining the military when young, I was, but what has happened in Iraq is the stark reality that you are signing your life, liberty and health away for basically minimum wage for service that has nothing to do with your country's defense. It's glaringly apparant now that the US military is simply meat for the political grinder. Nothing more.

I see what you're saying about the level of maturity in many of our younger kids but I don't think we'd lose the Battle of the Bulge. The troops that are currently in Iraq and fighting for their lives are proof that there are still plenty of tough men for fighting.

Also, Iraq is hardly WW2. In WW2 you knew you were TRULY fighting Hitler over there so you didn't have to fight him over here. His plans for an invasion of the US were no secret and I think THAT is a HUGE motivating factor, unlike cheap oil.

I met some Special Force operators during an airport layover last month. These guys now are so smart, tough and well trained that they make what we were in RVN look like a bunch of confused pussies. I have to take my hat off to them.
