I am surprised they are putting them on trial. It would seem to me that the american way would be to send them to an under ground prison in Haiti for about 30 years and then put them on trial with no lawyers and no rights

Spud has a hard time believing that the Viet Tan or even it's earlier incarnations the National United Front for the Freedom of Vietnam (NUFLV) are not at least in part funded by the American government. While the NUFLV tried to encourage active resistance to the government of Vietnam through revolutionary means it's subsequent incarnations as the Vietnamese Reform Party and later the Viet Tan disavow the use of violent confrontation and are now committed to using peaceful means to promote democracy and pluralism to the people of Vietnam.

They have been labelled a terrorist organisation for a while now and while not falling strictly under that category in a traditional sense it is easy to se why the Vietnamese government considers them an illegitimate nuisance.

That sed, Vietnam has a lousy human rights record and Spud supports the efforts of groups like Reporters Without Borders to try and free these folks and also to keep this entire situation, including the current imprisonments, from disapearing off of the world's media radar.

Any form of authoritarian state deserves to be challenged; regardless of whether it labels itself, communist, socialist, monarchal or democratic.
