Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Bob Herbert: At the top of the list of no-brainers in Washington should be Senator Jim Webb's proposed expansion of education benefits for the men and women who have served in the armed forces since Sept. 11, 2001. It's awfully hard to make the case that these young people who have sacrificed so much don't deserve a shot at a better future once their wartime service has ended. Senator Webb, a Virginia Democrat, has been the guiding force behind this legislation, which has been dubbed the new G.I. bill. The measure is decidedly bipartisan. Mr. Webb's principal co-sponsors include Republican Senators Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and John Warner of Virginia, and Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey

Who wouldn't support an effort to pay for college for G.I.'s who have willingly suited up and put their lives on the line, who in many cases have served multiple tours in combat zones and in some cases have been wounded?

We did it for those who served in World War II. Why not now?

Well, you might be surprised at who is not supporting this effort. The Bush administration opposes it, and so does Senator John McCain.

Surprise surprise!!!

What is even more enlightening is the majority of the republican party will stand behind this administration and baghdad bob mccain. It truely indicates who really support our troops.

Reinvigorating the G.I. bill is one of the best things this nation could do. The original G.I. Bill of Rights, signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1944, paid the full load of a returning veteran's education at a college or technical school and provided a monthly stipend. It was an investment that paid astounding dividends. Millions of veterans benefited, and they helped transform the nation. College would no longer be the exclusive preserve of the wealthy and those who crowned themselves the intellectual elite.

One can clearly see the hypocrisy of this republican administration and the party.

The begrudge the masses complaining about losing the high paying manufacturing job through offshoring and saying they should educate themselve in high tech. industry but don't provide the means to do so.

It is clear the republican party is purposely trying to make a 2 class economic system and are going out of their way to get it done.

Millions of veterans benefited, and they helped transform the nation.

I have benefited from the army paying for my degrees. It's the way I became an officer. The G.I Bill is one of the best investments the Govt has made. It is an example of a social program that works. But it also requires you to work for the degree.

I'm for it. Of course....we have to take the money from somewhere....I suggest Department of Education.....

Or the Department of Energy.

How about both?

Vernon,

Well, there might be a useful role for the Department of Energy, should we ever decide to adopt an actual energy policy. But, I'm okay with trying without it, because it really hasn't been too much help, as far as I can tell.

Gee, who has a bigger budget, defense or education???? You guys are nothing but idiots!
hey vermin, how many people died today becuase of your philipinio nurses?????

"This could cost as much as a week of war in Iraq. Way too expensive. Besides, college girls are all trollops and cunts. Our vets would be better off picking lettuce for $50 an hour."

John Insane.

Silence,

Well, appartently the military budget isn't big enough to give the GI Bill benefits we're discussing...so, it has to come from somewhere...This is the part the Dems traditionally and the Republicans recently don't get....THE MONEY HAS TO COME FROM SOMEWHERE....So, we were just discussing the superfluous parts of the bloated federal bureaucracy which, if eliminated to pay for said GI Bill, would not be missed.

Got it? Any ideas on this, or were you just gonna "tax the rich" to pay for it?

"Gee, who has a bigger budget, defense or education????"

The DoD has a genuine mission. Worthless agencies like Edumacation, Energy and Commerce are just hangers-on from the days of socialist central plkanning. They do nothing but perpetuate themselves.

Probably nobody died BECAUSE of Filipina nurses (it's a hard word to spell if you went to public school) but I'm certain hundreds of people were healed or at least comforted.

Most of these nurses enter the US with 7-10 years experience, and they're willing to go to poorly paid rural facilities that otherwise have no nurses.

Foreign nurses have to meet even tougher employment requirements that American nurses, but what do you know of such things?

Since you don't know shit it proves you're just a racist for bringing it up. But life has a funny way of self-correcting: someday you'll be injured and in an ER somewhere, and a Filipino doctor or nurse will save your life.

Got it? Any ideas on this, or were you just gonna "tax the rich" to pay for it?

YEAH!

Start by rescinding the Tax Payer Funded Subsidies afforded the oil industry (18 Billion Annually)
Then cut all aid to Israel (approximately 8 Billion Annually)

There, there is 26 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR to start with and not a single additional cent added to the poor suffering little "rich" folks!

But Red-if you cut subsidies to the oil companies, they'll have smaller record profits.
I bet you hate america, love al queda and don't go to church. At least not the right church.

The Bush administration opposes it, and so does Senator John McCain.

We cannot pay for education for our troops, they might not re enlist to fight in our Corporate Wars.

Sincerely,

The Right.

Because if we educate our children they will not have to enlist to fight in our Corporate Wars.

Well, there might be a useful role for the Department of Energy, should we ever decide to adopt an actual energy policy.

You are seeing the fruition of Cheney's energy meetings in Iraq right now.

Really, Vermin. I got a family here who would love to sue your ass for a Phillipino nurse killing their wife and mother. Couldn't speak much English, and did not know names of drugs, and was confused because "We don't have mediction like that."

It's funny that those who scream about the DOE loudest are usually the ones who never got an education.

Serious question:

Are you for or against the way Obamas mother used food stamps to get by while getting an education?

Many here attack his mother for doing so, but what she did is the EXACT INTENT of the program. It was meant as a temporary means to help someone out but many here attack that idea.

Let the Iraqis start paying for their own reconstruction now that they're running surpluses.

We can take our reconstruction money and actually use it to fund this bill and our OWN reconstruction.

My sister is an RN and in most cases, the foreign nurses are nowhere near as good as ones from America. It's not a racist thing. It's just an issue of sanitation standards, cultural and langugae differences that one is surrounded with from the time they're young. These things do carry over to the bedside manner of everybody that works in a hospital.

Commonsense,

Well, I'm a public school teacher with a Master's Degree, so I guess you're not really talking to me, even though you referred to my post.

You must be thinking of Hillary's constituency, except they don't seem to notice the Dept of Ed exists.

726, You assume incorrectly on two fronts...1, that the Dept. of Ed has anything positive to do with educating anyone, which it patently does not, and 2, that our soldiers are uneducated....That really says a great deal about you, but it's not flattering.

Ryker,

Research the percentage of college graduates vs non college graduates that have enlisted and get back to me on it.

For many many of our soldiers the military was the only way to further themselves since their socio economic status would not allow them to do so in the private sector.

I am sure that you will a great many PhD's and millionaires lining up to elist now don't you?

BTW, the truth is the truth. You can call it what you want, but it is still the truth. BTW you talk you must operate under the assumption that every single soldier out there is an Ivy League Graduate.

Well, being ex-military myself, I would never say that about our troops, and not because of some republican PC crap about 'supporting the troops' but because I simply don't believe it. If your simple self can show me where I said anything about soldiers being uneducated, I'll have 'fwthom' tickle your taint for you.

I won't hold my breath because I realize that your game is the typical republicunt game of making shit up about others in a accusatory tone. Good luck!

If we can off and lose 10 billion in Iraq, why not go off and lose 10 billion in the US too....That money came from somewhere too, I suggest we get it from there.

Maybe the army could have an AK-47 sale....

Of course....we have to take the money from somewhere....I suggest Department of Education.....

They can start with your paycheck, and BLT's pension. You hate the DOE so much, go teach at private schools and quit trying to screw up public education. Fuckin' welfare queens.
