Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Matt Taibbi: I had been attending the Cornerstone Church for weeks, but this was really my first day of school. I had joined Cornerstone -- a megachurch in the Texas Hill Country -- to get a look inside the evangelical mind-set that gave the country eight years of George W. Bush. The church's pastor, John Hagee, is one of the most influential evangelical preachers in the country -- not because his ministry is so very large (although he claims up to 4.5 million viewers a week for his Sunday sermons) but because of his near-absolute conquest of a very trendy niche in the market: Christian Zionism. The whole idea behind Christian Zionism is to align America with the nation of Israel so as to "hurry God up" in his efforts to bring about Armageddon.

will Taibbi be able to pay the bills without Christians and Republicans to write articles about?

A Democrat in the WH is what the talibaptists want-that way they catch whine and fund raise and blame the godless Democrats for everything and fund raise.
Right now they have to stfu and accept that the Republicans no more support their fundamentalist agenda than the Dems do.

Northguy;

Sounds like dems right now.

The whole idea behind Christian Zionism is to align America with the nation of Israel so as to "hurry God up" in his efforts to bring about Armageddon.

Religion is an extremely dangerous tool in the hands of madmen (with an agenda) like Hagee.

Some of these preachers....lunatics.

It's called Immanentizing the Eschaton.

The irony is that these people, who claim a strong belief in god and the bible, think they can make god do anything on their schedule. Now there's audacity.

Non Serviam.

HC

The Obama camp probably planted this article to tie McCain to Hagee. McCain does not attend Hagee's church but was glad to have his endorsement. Rev Wright is a complete wacko who said that the government invented AIDS to kill Black people. Obama attended Wright's church regularly for 20 years, was married in the church, had his children baptised in the church, and has the same wacky ideas as Rev Wright and terrorist Wulliam Ayers. Obama is a divider not a uniter.

I've never complained about bias on the front page... that would be silly, its a lib site. I just felt like pointing out the "McCain's Pastor" thread was dishonest... many agreed.

To keep brining up Hagee even though no one is running with this story is pretty sad though. A desperate attempt to associate McCain with him... Hagee is not going to be an issue in the election, Wright is. Angry White Evangelical preachers don't really bother Americans (Falwell, Robertson, etc) unless they go way too far (Phelps)...

"ROB THE A HOLE".....This fat Bastard Hagee will have his time to be vetted after the Democrat Nominee is finally selected. What this Preacher has said make Rev. Wright sound rather normal, an it will all come out make no mistake. The reason that White preachers don't rile most Americans because most Americans are white, THAT TO WILL CHANGE SOONER THAN YOU THINK!!!

Immanentizing the Eschaton. Huh? Does anybody know, most of all the believers, what the fuck this means? If there's anything positive coming out of the right-wing media's obsession with Wright and Obama, it's that we're reminded that it's the other side that the weirdo, religious crazies gravitate towards and vice versa.

Without looking it up which I refuse to waste my time on, doesn't "immanent" means innate in some way or other? Eschaton? Something to do with End Times?

Fancy linguistic lipstick on a lunatic pig doesn't mean that you should embrace that out of control pig like BushCo's GOP and now, seemingly, McCain has done.

"McCain does not attend Hagee's church but was glad to have his endorsement."
McCain SOUGHT OUT Hagees endorsement, it wasn't offered and now he's glad to have it. Big difference between seeking out an endorsement and accepting one that was offered on it's own.

This ultimate in deflections shifts the focus to a great progressive preacher from whom O'Bama has wimpily disentangled himself, and winds up with "Obama is a divider not a uniter." This verily boggles the mind, but it's a harbinger of things to come. The FWTHOMS of the world are already readying the collection of rocks they plan to throw at President O'Bama.

Obama attended Wright's church regularly for 20 years, was married in the church, had his children baptised in the church, and has the same wacky ideas as Rev Wright and terrorist Wulliam Ayers. Obama is a divider not a uniter.

Given that Obama will be our candidate, we can expect this line of attack 24/7.

In a real world the GOP would not even field a presidential candidate after what Bush/Cheney have done to this country.

What part of torture, rendition, imploding dollar, near zero international reputation, etc. etc. do these partisan zealots not understand ? ? ?

Celisary, could you expand on things that Hagee has said the make wright seem normal? Dont know much about Hagee. Know enough now about wright tho.

"Given that Obama will be our candidate, we can expect this line of attack 24/7."

If you keep saying it enough, it becomes true.

Big difference between seeking out an endorsement and accepting one that was offered on it's own.

Why would Obama seek out the endorsement of someone he called an uncle, or spiritual advisor. McCain had to seek out hagee's endorsement because they didn't know each other, Obama didn't need to seek out Wright's endorsement because they are like family.

Anyone thinking Hagee will be a bigger deal then Wright is nuts...

And nobody on the "Straight Talk Express" knew how to google the name "Hagee" so they could learn he's a hateful nut-job.

Well, shit he isnt even mentioned in this article, what the fuck?

That any candidate believes in an invisible guy who lives on a cloud and sees and hears everything we do should be reason enough not to vote for them. What a sad, sad state the world is in when the way in which a candidate for the most powerful position on Earth is analyzed and perhaps elected is on the basis of how he or she worships a fairy-tale being.

Sheesh. Any wonder why humanity is so fucked up?

"If you keep saying it enough, it becomes true."

In their own minds, that is. The GOP has convinced itself that being negative and attacking the opponent in nasty, deceitful ways works and they have been right since at least 1988(Clinton only won because Perot took a lot of Daddy Bush's votes and Dole in '96...well, he was just taking one for the party).

It remains to be seen whether it works this time. I'd say it won't but I wouldn't bet on it if we don't get a strong turnout from young voters. You can be sure the GOP will be doing it even if they see that it's not working any more. It's in the nature of the thing that they have allowed themselves to become.

To keep brining up Hagee even though no one is running with this story is pretty sad though.

I generally have given up responding to such ignorance.

but this is too much! Who cares who is "running" with this story? This IS the story not Jeremiah Wright.

Armageddon is not a valid foreign policy.

If you want to be afraid be afraid of these people.

I agree with Blue...Is "anything positive coming out of the right-wing media's obsession with Wright and Obama"?

And what if anything positive comes from seeking the End of the World?

yeah... you go Death Cult!

Sounds like dems right now.

And the GOPpers when Bubba was the man. It's all politics.

Too bad Jayzuzz gets ignored when Mammon comes a knockin' at the church door,though...

Some? Some??? It would be better put as "Some of these preachers.... ARE NOT lunatics."

The Christian God can be easily pictured as virtually the same as the many ancient gods of past civilizations. The Christian god is a three headed monster; cruel, evil and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed, beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of the people who say they serve him. The are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites.
-Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President

This IS the story not Jeremiah Wright.

really? Do a google news search for Hagee and Jeremiah Wright... check out who the mainstream sites are talking about...

Needless to say you have it backwards... Wright is the story because he actually is/was Obama's pastor and had a decades long relationship with him. Hagee is just an endorser...

Hamas endorsed Obama, does that mean he's with the terrorists?

History does not record anywhere at any time a religion that has any rational basis. Religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the unknown without help. But, like dandruff, most people do have a religion and spend time and money on it and seem to derive considerable pleasure from fiddling with it.

R A Heinlein

Rob,
You misread or misunderstood my post. I didn't say Obama sought out Wrights endorsement. Wright was his pastor so his comments got hung around Obamas neck.
McCain asked a very radical preacher for his endorsement...Hagee was not a close friend or a preacher whose church he attended, he just reached out for some far right wing religious "cred". Hagee hadn't endorsed McCain before that.

The profession of shaman has many advantages. It offers high status with a safe livelihood free of work in the dreary, sweaty sense. In most societies it offers legal privileges and immunities not granted to other men. But it is hard to see how a man who has been given a mandate from on High to spread tidings of joy to all mankind can be seriously interested in taking up a collection to pay his salary; it causes on to suspect that the shaman is on the moral level of any other con man.
But it's lovely work if you can stomach it.

R A Heinlein

Rob,
No, Hamas' endorsement does not mean Obama is with the terrorists but if he has ASKED Hamas for their endorsement, as McCain asked Hagee for his, you'd be all over Obama about that.

Immanentizing the Eschaton is setting in motion the events that bring about the end times.

Evashogouki got it right, 'no wonder humanity is so fucked up'. Referring to fairy tale believers.

Here's the deal. Freedom (the real kind put in the constitution, not the fake kind we pretend to have now) is poison to religous and business and governments innate need to CONTROL individuals.

As more and more people become less and less enlightened (and less intelligent), they fall under the power of one or more of these interests and our freedoms and individual liberties fall under the axe of special interest mutilation. All the while, the intellectuals sit around and argue with each other about who is more correct and who is to blame while the thieves steal us blind.

Yes, I AM talking about you, DR site blogger.

I wonder, if after a few years of a democrat in the White House and a democrat majority; will Taibbi be able to pay the bills without Christians and Republicans to write articles about?

OR, you could just do your own homework, but face it, you don't want to know anything negative surrounding McBush.

You claim to "know enough about Wright 'though'", Enough for what?

McCain asked a very radical preacher for his endorsement...Hagee was not a close friend or a preacher whose church he attended, he just reached out for some far right wing religious "cred".

The only reason the left is trying to make this is a big deal though is because of Rev. Wright. Bush went to Bob Jones U in 2000, and they call the Pope a servent of the Devil or some crap like that... Falwell and Robertson have said some ridiculous crap in their time too...

I don't see Hagee as being a big deal, because even if you are saying he's as bad as Wright, that just makes Obama look worse, because Obama chose to be around a pastor like Wright for 20 years. The more you guys talk of radical pastors the more we can talk about Wright... you'd be wise to let it go.

It's not about comparison, or deflection, it's about, as usual, hypocrisy.
Bush sucking up to Bob Jones and Falwell and Robertson, despite the insane babblings of all 3, doesn't somehow put Hagee in a more moderate light. It just points out the ongoing "do and say anything to get elected" mindset.

"To keep brining up Hagee even though no one is running with this story is pretty sad though.

Posted by Rob_The_A_Hole at 2008-05-06 11:23 AM"

Have you considered the possibility that there is no reason to "run with this story" at the moment? Just because some are keeping their powder dry until it matters (i.e., until it is McCain vs. the Dem nominee), doesn't mean the story isn't just waiting in the wings.

Somehow kissing the ass of an "agent of intolerance" just doesn't seem Presidential. Then again, nothing about McBush seems Presidential, except his Reaganesque alzheimers...

The more and the longer crazy pastors are in the news, the more it hurts Obama.

So, by all means, keep posting away. A good number of libs on this board believe that God is a fairy tale, and that people who profess belief in him are holding back the human race. Bet they'll be throwing the lever for Obama, though. Even atheism has its limits when up against good old-fashioned partisan hackery.

RiR,
Well, that excludes me but as a Christian I do draw the line at suggesting God has brought hurricanes down on people as punishment, and calling other churches whores, when the one blithering out this nonsense is as immoral and money grubbing as anything done on Bourbon St.

check out who the mainstream sites are talking about... and check out what wobbie is talking about...

EXACTLY

maybe Jeremiah is the story for you wobbie...but it is a distraction for the rest of us...

BTW this is a great job by Matt Taibbi- exposing the inner workings of the Death Cult...thx!

Fair point. Did you make a similar one when you read the kinds of things Wright was preaching? Or no?

Yeah, EP should be like the righties here, consistent with their criticisms of those on both sides of the political fence. What? They aren't? Oh, nevermind then.

Did I draw a similar line? Yes. I found Wrights comments as outrageous/inappropriate/
whatever, as most reasonable people did.

And I also got no insight in deciding who to vote for based on their preachers rantings just because the candidate didn't run out of the building.

More church shit, eh?

You go to this church, she goes to that church, his pastor's crazy, my pastor's crazy, I think his cat's a Muslim, and her canary is Catholic...

Face it, McBush's increasingly bizarre "pronouncements" are going to do him in, he doesn't need Hagee around his neck.

Excuse me, but what do Wright's understandable reactions to slavery and Jim Crow have to do with Hagee's rantings of unmitigated hate? herm

"The whole idea behind Christian Zionism is to align America with the nation of Israel so as to "hurry God up" in his efforts to bring about Armageddon."

I think the whole idea is fucking retarded. Not the idea of Israel as an ally, but idea of trying to speed up "Armageddon." Why on earth anyone would wish that on the world just blows my mind.

Churchs 'should' be a quiet place of grace and community service. Many are, but their preachers aren't usually rich or on T.V.

Ok then, let's talk about wifes of candidates who are convicted drug addicts who stole from the poor to support their DRUG habit. We can then spin the fact that McBush's wife didn't go to jail after her conviction because she was married to a white senator....Hmmmmm...seems ELITIST to me. I can't wait to play that game! It may not be as cut-and-dry as I make it sound, but hey, you guys invented the rules and we're going to play by them.

DO YOU PEOPLE REALLY WANT A DRUG ADDICT AND THIEF TO BE THE FIRST LADY?

Well two thoughts on that...

First, I think that unless its Clinton running against McCain that backfires for Obama. If you're trying to say Wright and Hagee are equally bad, then you have McCain seeking an endorsement to get the support of Conservatives, and you have Obama making Wright a mentor and close personal friend. That looks worse for Obama then it does for McCain.

Second, mobilizing Evangelical Christians gave GW Bush the election in 2004... launching a campaign attacking a preacher from that demographic isn't smart.

If you're trying to say Wright and Hagee are equally bad...

Hagee is far worse than Wright.

Wright is more right than wrong in his assessment of social justice issues and race relations in America.

The character assassination attempt on Wright is mostly a creation of the corporate MSM who want either of the two corporately pre-approved candidates (ie. ClintCo or McSame) to win the Presidency.

If either of those two win then America loses.

Again.

Be Well.

Churchs 'should' be a quiet place of grace and community service. Many are, but their preachers aren't usually rich or on T.V.

Posted by LIVE_OR_DIE at 2008-05-06 02:34 PM

Excellent point. Unfortunately it's the few crazies you always hear about (Wright, Phelps, Hagee, etc.) and not the hundreds of other pastors and church leaders who actually do create a net benefit to society.

What I don't understand is why these pastors are even getting so much attention. I seriously doubt that once McCain/Obama/Clinton get into office, they'll have their pastor whispering evil policy decisions in their ears. If we're going to separate church and state, let's truly keep them separate!

This is beautiful. You guys came to a good conclusion faster than any left/right compromise that has taken place in Washington over the past 8 years.

What ever happened to respect between right and left. There was a time when we could discuss ideas and an intelligent discussion took place. Now it's just "that's stupid, what a retard!" And it is on both sides. I try my best to look from both sides of the aisle and usually there is good reason for both sides of the argument. Can we get back to where we disagree but still respect each other? Is it possible?

I guess this is mostly due to the Democrats and Republicans, both of whom represent no one's interest but their own. Can we, as a society, rise above the politicing of these parties and have faith in values and ideals again, not talking points?

Maybe because church and state in reality are not really separate? Maybe because all of those pastors that are getting so much attention are very influential and are mostly rich and have many parishioners who are also voters.

These voters are like lemmings and as shown on in this story will be brain washed into voting for whomever the church says to vote for.

So, My Friend, you better Believe or you better get yer Believer fixed... the Game is afoot and the Battle is on for your Heart and Mind an yer EVERlasting Soul even.

apples and oranges.

and to make the point....is there any sort of person or group who the left is seeking an endorsement that isnt aligned with them on their views and such....or will the left tell me here that each and every person who has endorsed "him or her" is middle of the road all american b flat concert people.......I really dont think so.

We don't 'believe' god is a fairy tale. We know God is a fairy tale. But the real problem here is that you, and hundreds of millions of ingorant morons like you, RIR, 'believe' tha god is real!

According to the constitution - there shall be no test of religion for the presidency. Why can't you god-fearing Morons get that???

The country, and thus the world suffers for your ignorance and stupidity.

To Answer the question as to why Hagee and others like him want to hurry Armageddon?

Because Christ Comes Home Again! You see, Jeebus won't put in a guest appearance unless we all blow our selves up (oh - with Satan's help - of course).

Then all the real, I mean REAL, christians get to fly up in a space ship, or a cloud, or some damn miracle thingy and be with christ while the Jews and the rest of us suffer plagues and things.

And then they get to come back down here, where their loved ones, the most faithful, who have died, get up from their graves (cue George Romero) and everyone lives in Jeeeezus's 1000 years of peace.

Now don'cha all just want that?

Can i hear a Cumbaya!

Dumpling- can I have my flying car then?

"Democrats and Republicans, both of whom represent no one's interest but their own...."

Politics 1A: Republicans think they represent their own interests but really represent corporate interests. Democrats in theory represent what is best for the most people. In theory. Sometimes corporate bucks push them into the wrong corner too. herm

Wright - Nutjob with a lot of offensive and racially polarising views.

Hagee - Wants the US to start WWIII to bring about the end times.

Hagee endorses McCain because he thinks McCain is most likely to End the World. McCain is running for an office with access to the biggest nuclear arsenal on the planet. Hagee wants him to get into office and use it. McCain is happy about this endorsement, and sought it out.

HOW IS THIS NOT A PROBLEM FOR YOU ALL?

I agree 110%.

Enough religion in politics.
Our foreign policy should not be decided from a book written centuries ago by superstitious Hebrews, and the modern-day brainwashed fearmongers who follow the nonsensical ramblings of desert dwelling madmen.

Bring SANITY back to the USA.

Worship god if you want, but let's not enable any religious book decide US foreign policy.

The fact that this seldom gets reported is further proof that the MSM is a tool of the republican party.

Hagee is about as representative of evangelical Bible believing Christians as Jesse Jackson is of Democrats. The guy is off-the-table crazy about end-times and won't shut up about it. My wife said it succinctly, "once these guys start talking about the end-times, they can't stop!"

True. True.

Hagee is about as representative of evangelical Bible believing Christians as Jesse Jackson is of Democrats.

He's also a complete Red Herring and a source of argumentitive masturbation for people who have hitched their wagons to a hard-left ideologue who keeps company with "Black Liberationist" pastors, sleazebag politicos, and former Marxist terrorists who killed people on American soil with home-made bombs---and still wished they had killed more.

McCain didn't go to Cornerstone Church for 20 years.

So this a particularly fucking stupid tack to take.

Even for the left-wing blogosphere.

Argh,
You clearly don't understand the Hagee-ites. They're looking for everything to go downhill fast, especially in the middle east, especially with a UN style peace process in Israel. 100% of them think Hillary will speed this up. I know because it's all my father-in-law talks about.

It drives me crazy, and I actually believe the Bible. I don't think the world is gonna end for all of us anytime soon (although it could end for an individual, obviously).

"McCain didn't go to Cornerstone Church for 20 years."

Riiiiight. He just waited until Hagee claimed gays were responsible for Katrina, the Catholic Church was "the great whore", and suggested Jews were only good as pawns in the Apocalypse.

And then, McCain actively sought Hagee's endorsement.

www.raptureready.com
Check out their "speedometer" of when Jesus is coming back--pure narcissistic modern American insanity. I regularly mock it with fellow Christians.
The entire site is insane--but Hagee et al eat it up!

"Check out their "speedometer" of when Jesus is coming back--pure narcissistic modern American insanity."

Not to mention blasphemy...which they would realize if they ever actually read the Bible.

Check out their "speedometer" of when Jesus is coming back--pure narcissistic modern American insanity.

You're right.

Hagee should be "goddamning" America and accusing her government of carrying out disease experiments against negroes.

That would elevate his status to "respectable" and thereby distance he and his rhetoric from his associated candidate.

Makes all that rapture horsehit seem kinda silly.

To keep brining up Hagee even though no one is running with this story is pretty sad though. A desperate attempt to associate McCain with him...

Hagee's being covered all over the place this week. The media has finally discovered that right-wing politicians have their share of dodgy religious buddies.
