Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Indian Finance Minister P Chidambaram has said that it is "outrageous" that developed countries are turning food crops into biofuels. He said that countries like the US were doing so while the world's poor are struggling with surging food prices.

This is what you get when states like Iowa hold so much sway in our electoral process.

This is what you get when environmentalist idiots decide it's better to burn our food than drill for oil in our own country.

"That is right, we care more about the caribous in Alaska and the fish in the Gulf of Mexico than we do about the poor eating. If the poor can't eat corn, well, let them eat cake." -- The Fanatical Environmental Left

First of all, who from the "fanatical environmental left" determined CORN was the best source of Ethanol? Methinks it was Archer-Daniel-Midlands.

Again.

especially since it costs a gallon of gas to make a gallon of biofuel

whats the point?

This coming from a man who lives on the shores of this mess:

www.smithsonianmag.com

Having an Indian lecture us on ecology is like having a Chinaman lecture us on human rights.

Like I said before. We are burning our food.

1 gallon of fuel to make 1.3 gallons of biofuel from corn. It only works when you have a government subisdy. Thank you allgore.

Un-intended consequences suck.

Hey if you believe that Archer-Daniel-Midland isn't that the equivalent of believing that Haliburton got us into the war?

ADM drummed up the global warming stuff to make a profit. So... Does that make the Fanatical Environmental Left to global warming was Bush was to the war?

There were people telling them that this would happen. Just as there are people telling them that the warming (if it exists) is not man-made. But they do not listen now as they did not listen then.

So you are saying that allgore is in bed with ADM.

There are a lot of people who stand to profit greatly from the global warming scare. They are heavily invested in these technologies and are counting on goverments forcing people to buy their technologies.

They have no interest in the truth, they want to make money.

In this sense these people are just like people accuse Haliburtion or the defense contractors of being.

If the global warming alarmists are being used by these people/companies aren't they just like Bush being used?

They are just as big of fools as Bush, just on a different topic.

Corn .... we call it maize.

Stupid Injuns

"hat is right, we care more about the caribous in Alaska and the fish in the Gulf of Mexico than we do about the poor eating. If the poor can't eat corn, well, let them eat cake."

Don't be stupid. There is about a 6 month supply of oil in Alaska. Big fucking deal.

If the democrats had any sack (should I even bother finishing this sentence???) they would allow drilling in ANWR under the condition that not one more drop of oil gets imported after the first barrel is pumped out of the ground there. My guess is the republicans would shut the hell up about it at that point.

That is the biggest bunch of BS I have seen today.

"That is the biggest bunch of BS I have seen today"

You're an idiot.
www.guardian.co.uk

Nulli,

You sure?

100% useage of ANWR oil.....

10.4Billion is the mean.

(10.4Billion * 1.15) / (20Billion per day) approx 598 days

Now if your talking gasoline only, then its

(51% per barrel) * 598 = 304 days of gasoline.

Not a gold mine, but not as bad as you state either, which is typically the case ;-)

Nulli,

ooops...20Million.... LOL

Also we only use 10million barrels of gasoline a day....so it works out about the same....

In a year, therefore, the U.S. consumes about 146 billion gallons (about 550 billion liters) of gasoline!

That's 400,000,000 gallons of gas a day we use.

At least according to:

auto.howstuffworks.com

(10,400,000,000 * 1.15)/400,000,000=30 days.

If you agree your approach is correct.

Ah, I mixed units. Oil vs Gasoline. Conversion rate for a barrel of oil from the link above is:

a barrel of oil (which contains 42 gallons or 159 liters) will yield something like 19 or 20 gallons (75 liters) of gasoline, depending on the refinery.

or 47% conversion.

Conversion of ((10,400,000,000*0.47)1.15)/
400,000,000=14 days.

Hm. Someone check my math. This isn't going in the right direction.

I took the train.

Interesting.

U.S. Total Petroleum Exports:
1,317,000 barrels/day (or 26,340,000 gallons of potential gasoline)
(2006)

www.eia.doe.gov

From the EIA.DOE.GOV site, we use:

20,687,000 barrels a day, 20 gallons/barrel = 413,740,000 gallons of gasoline/day.

Now that's kind of interesting. To get 10.4 billion barrels of oil out of ANWR, we'd be there 65 years.

Looking at what we export we'd reach 10.4 billion barrels in 21.6 years, just by NOT exporting the oil we are producing today.

Hemp would solve this problem.

Lefty retards --

Less than half of petroleum goes to transportation fuel. Most of it goes to chemicals and plastic.

Wot is left (to quote Spud The Retard) ends up as fuel

"Hemp would solve this problem."

true that.

Has anyone ever noticed that lefties never show up to defend their position when the topic is against them (except for nulli...I give you props), but people on the right are always ready to defend their position when the topic is the other way (*and usually with pretty sound logic).

However, I do not see this as a left/right issue. This is a matter of energy independence, something both sides say they are concerned with (though I wonder sometimes). I have heard that it takes a years worth of food to fill the tank of an Explorer one time. That seems pretty ridiculous.

"Has anyone ever noticed that lefties never show up to defend their position when the topic is against them (except for nulli...I give you props)"

Thanks, but I don't see how this topic is "against" lefties. Leftists have been criticizing biofuels for as long as agribusiness has been getting subsidies.

I say Drill America and Grow Hemp.

Mandate that every well is pumped for domestic consumption.

Use hemp to produce alcohol.

ADM got slammed for price fixing back in the 90s.

This is the purposeful depletion of supply to raise prices.

My truck runs best on ethanol, but it would be best to use cellulose as a biofuel stock.

what we need right now is the chinese government to figure out how to make fuel out of rice.

+1 on Ozark's 0008 post.

Yeah, that's it. Drill for oil and smoke dope!

Is it any wonder this country is going down the shitter?

I suppose this doesn't matter much to you, DT, but you don't smoke the hemp. You smoke the marijuana. You use the hemp for fuel, cloth, foodstock in more than a few cases (if my memory serves me correctly).

So why not use the hemp? Or is it too closely associated with marijuana? Is that your problem with this idea?

(Damnit I just fed a troll, didn't I?)

According to the conservative minds above, the position is either believe in poor EROEI biofuels from corn, soy, etc. OR drill in ANWAR for "security?"

Bullshit.

How about biofuels from hemp and jatropha and more energy invested in solar, wind, and nuclear? Not to mention more efficient cars, more (ideally free) public transport, better city planning, etc.?

Use your fucking brains. It's not about Al Gore. It's about big businesses maximizing profits and exploiting niches, about politicians pandering and subsidizing, and an uneducated populace raised on remote control that thinks we can pump oil out of the ground for eternity, or rather, doesn't think at all.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. THINK.

we cant grow enough for all them there people anyhow

This is what you get when environmentalist idiots decide it's better to burn our food than drill for oil in our own country.

You mean idiots like this guy?

I think the answer is obvious. You want to use hemp so that your blessed Mary Jane can get some kind of traction. If we started burning hemp as a biofuel, next we would no doubt be hearing about all the wonderful benefits of hemp and its close cousin, pot.

That's how it works. Dumb down the public, so you can then give legitimacy to your particular drug or perversion.

Yep!

However, the most egregious example of this occurred in 1976.

YEAH!

Food?

Corn Syrup is far from "food"!

Anyway, I would like for you wingdings, who are all a sudden worried about the "poor", to list Indian dishs with "corn" in it!

"Indian Finance Minister P Chidambaram has said that it is "outrageous" that developed countries are turning food crops into biofuels."

Meanwhile, Tata Group, India's largest private sector group with over 98 companies in various sectors, and manufacturer of the new Tata Nano, the new people's car to be sold starting at $2,500, has recently purchased Land Rover and Jaguar (pronounced Ja-Gu-Ar) from Ford. It is to be noted that millions of cheap Nanos hitting the roads in India and across Asia, and Rovers and Ja-Gu-Ars that are not particularly fuel efficient by any stretch, can't be a Good Thing as far as energy conservation is concerned.

You need to stifle Yourself. I used to wait around at midnight in bed waiting on Dad to get home so we could eat some good ole fashion Kero Corn Syrup and peterpan peanutbutter. If that ain't food I don't know what is. Best belly filler I know of.

Does it bother anyone else that India, a third world country that is trying to move up economically is blaming us for not feeding their people? Yet their population is still growing at an exponential rate. They were incredibly proud of having more than 1 Billion people. This is typical of many many third world countries. They expect the rest of the world to hold their hands, feed them, give them medicine and save their asses everytime they go to war. Meanwhile they are busy crapping out babies. Everytime we give them enough food and medicine to feed and inoculate their current population, it just spikes again and now we're supposed to give them more and more and more, so they can have more and more and more babies. I think we should tell them, hey, we'll give you guys food and medicine, but with it we're gonna add contraceptives. You guys start using it responsibly and we'll keep giving you food. Otherwise, too bad, grow your own or starve to death, we're tired of the fact that this world is so overpopulated that the earth cannot support us all and eventually we're all gonna die due to Global Warming, Global Food Shortages, Global destruction and urbanuization of environment, etc.

so we could eat some good ole fashion Kero Corn Syrup and peterpan peanutbutter...Best belly filler I know of.

Just curious, when was the last time you were able to pry your ass from your wheelchair?

You know Larry, just because you have the ability to stuff copious amounts chewable material into your pie-hole, doesn't mean it is food.

Garbage in = Garbage out

On point:
Hemp can grow 14 feet in one summer with stalks as thick as a man's arm. This can be done on marginal land with no chemical fertilizers or pesticides, and half the water needed for corn. After harvest the land will have more available nutrients for crops like wheat, potatoes, and soybeans than it did before the hemp was grown. You can harvest more than one crop in a year in the Southern states. There are endless virarities of strands and crosses some producing better stock for wood pulp, or sugar packed cellulose for ethanol, or fiber for fabric and rope. The seeds--which are produced by the tens of millions per acre--can be ground for flour or seed oil, or used for animal feed.

The only reason we don't grow hemp as a commodity in America--like we were instructed to by the founding fathers--is because of ignorance and lies from nitwits like DoubtingThomas who obviously don't know a goddamned thing about farming, plants, or history.

Hmmmmm, me wonders whence the passion for hemp commodities comes from? Me also wonders if the same passion would display itself if the case could be made for soy beans or some other commidity to be used for biofuels. Yes indeed me wonders whether potheads like R8RH8 would be equally passionate for utilizing such commodities for biofuels?

Answer: Prolly not! Unless of course doing so put Mary Jane in the public spotlight, whereupon pot-heads could then make political hay for their drug of choice!

Yes sireeee....let's smoke pot, and do it in the name of humanitarian aid!

U.S., Brazil, Canada, I'll stop here because biofuels have expanded to pretty much the entire world.

Now, some questions for you.
Where do the most births per capita occur?

Name the most underfed nation.

Where is the highest amount of deforestation occuring?

What will the world population be in 2050?

What is the most poluted region in the world?

Where is the population increasing the fastest?

You need to read lables on the food you eat just a little closer.

Hmmmmm, me wonders whence the passion for hemp commodities comes from?

It comes from the fact that I'm right. Hemp is a commercially viable and ecologically sound commodity. And you can't provide any information to the contrary. Your argument (which is really just a lack of an argument supplanted by changing the subject to "pot") has placed you in an untenable position, you're just too stupid to realize it and continue embarrassing yourself.

Squawk away lil fella. You're a hunter-gatherer living in a neolithic world.

Read a book.

Get a clue.

Blah, blah, blah. Yeah, I'm sure you're really concerned for the ecology with all your hemp-preaching.

On the contrary, you're not so much interested in the ecology as you are in getting loaded from your dope smoking. You're just shilling for dope, masquerading as a hemp ecologist.

See how stupid your potheaded ways have made you chump?

No one smokes hemp, you idiot. You may as well smoke a ball of yarn.

On the contrary, you're not so much interested in the ecology as you are in getting loaded from your dope smoking. You're just shilling for dope, masquerading as a hemp ecologist.

I'll be getting high regardless of hemp laws, or any laws for that matter. I don't need hemp to be legalized to buy, grow, or smoke cannabis.

So that's another check in the, "wrong again" column for you.

Try again.

Blah, blah, blah. Yeah, I'm sure you're really concerned for the ecology with all your hemp-preaching.

Actually that's precisely the reason why hemp needs to be legalised again.

On the contrary, you're not so much interested in the ecology as you are in getting loaded from your dope smoking. You're just shilling for dope, masquerading as a hemp ecologist.

There is hemp that can be grown that has no THC content. That belies yer absurd assertion, doesn't it?

See how stupid your potheaded ways have made you chump?

No Debauching Thomas, you are the stupid, deluded, propagandised and ignorantly hateful POS on this thread.

America was built on Hemp. All yer early presidents grew it and the land needed it to make tough sails for ships and rope and clothes that lasted. The anti-marijuana laws in the US stem back to the early days of the automobile. The early Big Oil advocates back in their "humble" infancy convinced the government to start a scare campaign making pot illegal. Propaganda films like Reefer Madness and hte like came out in an attempt to scare people away from the relatively benign drug. During prohibition alcohol was illegal and pot smoking, although illegal began to gain currency in the speak easys and jazz clubs that sprung up all over the place. The real reasons Pot is illegal today have very little to do with it's narcotic properties and more to do with an unholy alliance of Big Oil and Big Agra and Big Pharma and the Alcohol industry all not wanting to compete with it. Also, the fact that marijuana for the longest time was considered an afrocentric drug compared to the eurocentric alcohol was a huge contributing factor back when racism in the US was entrenched and systemic.

See how stupid yer close minded ways have made you, Tommyboy?

Be Well.

I didn't say anyone smoked hemp. But I do notice how passionate pot-heads are about hemp. I wonder why that would be? They don't seem to get all fired up for lettuce, or soybeans, or ivy, or apple trees. Such a strange passion they have with the hemp plant...even though it's not marijuana and no one smokes it. Hmmmm....I wonder why they get all hot and bothered, and invest so much effort and emotion into promoting the hemp plant?

Naaaaah, it's not about marijuana. Not at all!

Gee, I give up. What is corn syrup made from?

Hey, does "doubting Thomas" sound like Friday from Dragnet or what?
