Prayers from Iowa, Kanrei. Thank you for raising some awareness on this as it's not as easy to talk about as breast cancer and leukemia...
My first colonoscopy was in June (I'm 42) due to symptoms and family history. The prep wasn't as bad as I expected and my first and only tattoo is inside my colon marking where the Dr. removed a polyp.
The exam cost around $4,500 and insurance covered all but $700 of it. Per my doctor's orders I will be getting checked every three years from here on out. In the off-chance insurance would not want to pay I will cover it if possible. The $4,500 would have hurt this time but I could have made it work.
To everyone putting off exams, the worst part for me was the phone call to the Dr. describing some embarrassing symptoms.
Just get it done. It beats the alternative.
