Duke: DNC Won't Pay Back $10M Loan

Duke Energy won't be repaid the $10 million line of credit it guaranteed for Charlotte to host last year's Democratic National Convention, the company confirmed Thursday. As the credit line came due, Duke made official what it had signaled to shareholders in an earnings report last November. Because Duke can claim the money as a business expense for tax purposes, shareholders will foot $6 million of the cost.

Greeks Panic as Drug Companies Slash Shipments

Greece is facing a serious shortage of medicines amid claims that pharmaceutical multinationals have halted shipments to the country because of the economic crisis and, as The Guardian reports, concerns that the drugs will be exported by middlemen because prices are higher in other European countries. Rubbing further salt into the Greek (un-medicated) wound, the Red Cross slashed its supply of donor blood to Greece because it had not paid its bills on time. Pharmacies in Greece describe chaotic scenes as clients desperately search from shop to shop for much-needed drugs. Greece's Pharmaceutical Association said "around 300 drugs are in very short supply," adding that "It's a disgrace. The companies are ensuring that they come in dribs and drabs to avoid prosecution. Everyone is really frightened."

Boston Doled Out $100K-Plus to 3,700 Workers

Court settlements helped two Boston teachers push their pay last year to $400,000 and $300,000, respectively, according to new payroll documents released by the city today.

The notably anti-gay sermon accompanying a Muslim Friday prayer on Feb. 15 on the campus of Cornell University didn't go over so well.

The Cornell Sun first reported the story.

"Not all homosexuals are pedophiles, but all pedophiles are homosexuals," the person who delivered the sermon said, according to junior Ihsan Kabir, president of the Committee for the Advancement of Muslim Culture.

They'd violate Mayor Bloomberg's new rules, which prohibit eateries from serving or selling sugary drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces.

A Day With Google Glass

Finally I get a chance to put the device on and find out what using Glass in the real world actually feels like. This is the moment I've been waiting for all day. It's really happening.

When you activate Glass, there's supposed to be a small screen that floats in the upper right-hand of your field of vision, but I don't see the whole thing right away. Instead I'm getting a ghost of the upper portion, and the bottom half seems to melt away at the corner of my eye.

The experience drove him to study the American health care system in search of an explanation.
