Duke: DNC Won't Pay Back $10M Loan

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/02/28/3885178/duke-energy-wont-be-repaid-from.html</wordzilla:destination>

Duke Energy won't be repaid the $10 million line of credit it guaranteed for Charlotte to host last year's Democratic National Convention, the company confirmed Thursday. As the credit line came due, Duke made official what it had signaled to shareholders in an earnings report last November. Because Duke can claim the money as a business expense for tax purposes, shareholders will foot $6 million of the cost.

<wordzilla:extended>The $10 million took 1 cent off Duke's 2012 earnings, when the nation's biggest utility earned $1.7 billion. Company CEO Jim Rogers said the loan was good for Charlotte and Duke Energy and would have been extended to a Republican convention. "At the end of the day we'll do our best to get our money back," he said in January. "But if we don't, it's just a contribution we're making I think for the greater good of our community."</wordzilla:extended>

Greeks Panic as Drug Companies Slash Shipments

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-02-28/greeks-panic-drug-firms-slash-supplies-90-bad-debts</wordzilla:destination>

Greece is facing a serious shortage of medicines amid claims that pharmaceutical multinationals have halted shipments to the country because of the economic crisis and, as The Guardian reports, concerns that the drugs will be exported by middlemen because prices are higher in other European countries. Rubbing further salt into the Greek (un-medicated) wound, the Red Cross slashed its supply of donor blood to Greece because it had not paid its bills on time. Pharmacies in Greece describe chaotic scenes as clients desperately search from shop to shop for much-needed drugs. Greece's Pharmaceutical Association said "around 300 drugs are in very short supply," adding that "It's a disgrace. The companies are ensuring that they come in dribs and drabs to avoid prosecution. Everyone is really frightened."

Have Republicans Lost Young Voters For Good?

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/feb/26/republican-party-lost-young-voters</wordzilla:destination>

Republican operatives all over the country are scrambling to figure out what's wrong with the Republican party. Most have centered on analyzing the political leanings of millennials because they are a growing bloc, and because, for the past two elections, President Obama has won 60% or more of voters between the ages of 18 and 29.

Civil Rights and the Collapse of Birmingham, Alabama

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.americanthinker.com/2013/02/civil_rights_and_the_collapse_of_birmingham_ala.html</wordzilla:destination>

Birmingham, Alabama is considered by many to be the birthplace of the civil rights movement. Today, African-Americans in Birmingham benefit from a numerical majority in the population, corresponding majorities in government jobs, and political control of the city. But civil rights won't address what ails the city now.<p>Birmingham is recognized as one of the most violent and poorly-run cities in the nation. The city runs a massive deficit, and is county seat of Jefferson County, which recently cut a deal with a European bank as part of the largest government bankruptcy in U.S. history.<p>Read more: <a href="http://www.americanthinker.com/2013/02/civil_rights_and_the_collapse_of_birmingham_ala.html#ixzz2M4YPGwRh">www.americanthinker.com</a>Follow us: @AmericanThinker on Twitter | AmericanThinker on Facebook

Finally I get a chance to put the device on and find out what using Glass in the real world actually feels like. This is the moment I've been waiting for all day. It's really happening.<p>When you activate Glass, there's supposed to be a small screen that floats in the upper right-hand of your field of vision, but I don't see the whole thing right away. Instead I'm getting a ghost of the upper portion, and the bottom half seems to melt away at the corner of my eye.

A Liberal Democrat's Health Care Prescription

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.weeklystandard.com/articles/singapore-cure_701312.html?page=1</wordzilla:destination>

Weekly Standard: David Goldhill is a liberal Democratic business executive whose father was killed by a hospital-borne infection several years ago. The experience drove him to study the American health care system in search of an explanation. "How is it possible," he writes, "that my father's death was an avoidable accident with no one to blame?" The answer shocked him. Goldhill discovered that health care is unlike any other industry: "Everything about health care -- how we pay for it, how we regulate it, how we judge its effectiveness, how we're willing to accept low standards from it, even how we talk about it -- exists on a separate island from the mainland of every other service or product in our economy."
