In a commencement address Sunday, President Barack Obama told the graduating class at Morehouse College, a historically black college, that there's "no time for excuses" for this generation of African-American men and it's time for them to step up professionally and personally. Saying that in his youth he sometimes rationalized his own mistakes "as just another example of the world trying to keep a black man down," Obama rejected that thinking and said, "We've got no time for excuses -- not because the bitter legacies of slavery and segregation have vanished entirely; they haven't. It's just that in today's hyperconnected, hypercompetitive world, with a billion young people from China and India and Brazil entering the global workforce alongside you, nobody is going to give you anything you haven't earned."

The winner of Saturday's $590.5 million Powerball jackpot, the biggest prize in the contest's history, bought the ticket at a Publix supermarket in the small Florida town of Zephyrhills. The winner's identity will be revealed after the win is confirmed. A California high school senior has won a $50,000 prize in the International Science and Engineering Fair for her invention of a battery improvement that enables super-fast charging. Eesha Khare, 18, who will attend Harvard University in the fall, created a small supercapacitor that can fit inside a cell phone battery and enable ultra-fast electricity transfer and storage. It delivers a full charge in 20-30 seconds instead of several hours and can supposedly withstand up to 100,000 charges, a 100-fold increase over current technology. "I will be setting the world on fire," she said.

A young woman who lost whole body parts to flesh-eating bacteria now has bionic hands. Aimee Copeland is using the latest technology in prosthetic hands to chop vegetables, pick up tiny items like Skittles candies and comb and iron press her hair. "I really want to be able to get back in the kitchen and start cooking some delicious vegetarian meals for myself," Copeland said. "I never thought I would actually be able to hold a knife and cut something. That's just incredible."

It isn't worth paying for a 3D showing.

Don't expect depth, don't expect many interesting new gadgets, don't expect CGI characters and don't expect anyone to yell "HARRISOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!!" (It's not as fun anyhow).

Do expect lots of gun fights, comedy, gay subtext (I'm sure some of it was done intentionally for laughs), tons of Lucasarts magic (suck it trekies star wars rules), and a skilled actor playing the villain.

In short it's not as good as master of lens flare JJ Abrams' last Star Trek but I had fun watching it.

The College Republicans at Boston University have offered a whites-only scholarship. The $250 Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship offered by chapter president Joe Mroszczyk requires that applicants have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher, write two essays and be at least one-quarter Caucasian. "We are not doing this as some kind of white supremacy thing. I wanted to have a dialogue about racial preference," Mroszczyk said.
