No Excuses, Obama Tells Young Black Men

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2013/05/19/obama-morehouse-college-commencement/2324241/</wordzilla:destination>

In a commencement address Sunday, President Barack Obama told the graduating class at Morehouse College, a historically black college, that there's "no time for excuses" for this generation of African-American men and it's time for them to step up professionally and personally. Saying that in his youth he sometimes rationalized his own mistakes "as just another example of the world trying to keep a black man down," Obama rejected that thinking and said, "We've got no time for excuses -- not because the bitter legacies of slavery and segregation have vanished entirely; they haven't. It's just that in today's hyperconnected, hypercompetitive world, with a billion young people from China and India and Brazil entering the global workforce alongside you, nobody is going to give you anything you haven't earned."

<wordzilla:extended>In related news every Black American that's really conservative ran into their closet and cried with joy that they should be alive to hear such things from such a President.</wordzilla:extended>

      <wordzilla:destination>http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2013/05/18/saratoga-teens-research-takes-science-world-by-storm/</wordzilla:destination>

A California high school senior has won a $50,000 prize in the International Science and Engineering Fair for her invention of a battery improvement that enables super-fast charging. Eesha Khare, 18, who will attend Harvard University in the fall, created a small supercapacitor that can fit inside a cell phone battery and enable ultra-fast electricity transfer and storage. It delivers a full charge in 20-30 seconds instead of several hours and can supposedly withstand up to 100,000 charges, a 100-fold increase over current technology. "I will be setting the world on fire," she said.

Aimee Copeland is using the latest technology in prosthetic hands to chop vegetables, pick up tiny items like Skittles candies and comb and iron press her hair. "I really want to be able to get back in the kitchen and start cooking some delicious vegetarian meals for myself," Copeland said. "I never thought I would actually be able to hold a knife and cut something. That's just incredible."

      <wordzilla:destination>http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=2674267#.UZPRQ0Z3yd4</wordzilla:destination>

The College Republicans at Boston University have offered a whites-only scholarship. The $250 Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship offered by chapter president Joe Mroszczyk requires that applicants have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher, write two essays and be at least one-quarter Caucasian. "We are not doing this as some kind of white supremacy thing. I wanted to have a dialogue about racial preference," Mroszczyk said.

<wordzilla:extended>If the scholarship is private I don't see what the big deal is. The world does have poor white people and it hurts to not get a scholarship because you're white.</wordzilla:extended>

Nadine Schweigert's marriage took place among friends and family who were encouraged to "blow kisses to the world" after she exchanged rings with her "inner groom." "I was waiting for someone to come along and make me happy," Schweigert told Inforum. "At some point, a friend said, 'Why do you need someone to marry you to be happy? Marry yourself.'"

Angelina Jolie Has Double Mastectomy

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/14/opinion/my-medical-choice.html?ref=opinion</wordzilla:destination>

Angelina Jolie: I carry a "faulty" gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman. ... Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.

<wordzilla:extended>I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer. ...

<p>Breast cancer alone kills some 458,000 people each year, according to the World Health Organization, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. It has got to be a priority to ensure that more women can access gene testing and lifesaving preventive treatment, whatever their means and background, wherever they live. The cost of testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2, at more than $3,000 in the United States, remains an obstacle for many women.</wordzilla:extended>
