Subpoenas issued in US Attorney firings probe

      <wordzilla:destination>http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Subpoenas_issued_in_US_Attorney_firings_1203.html</wordzilla:destination>

The federal prosecutor appointed by Attorney General Michael Mukasey to examine the "haphazard, arbitrary and unprofessional" conduct of his predecessor Alberto Gonzales and others related to the firings of nine US Attorneys has "been meeting with defense lawyers, dispatching subpoenas and seeking information about the events, according to legal sources familiar with the case," according to a report in Wednesday's Washington Post.

<wordzilla:extended>In September, the Department of Justice's Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility on Monday released a nearly 400-page report on the US Attorney firings, which found the process was "fundamentally flawed" and placed the blame at the top of the department. It recommended appointing a special prosecutor to continue its examination, which was hampered by the IG's inability to issue subpoenas to officials who had left the deparment.

"By naming a federal prosecutor to determine whether crimes have been committed, the attorney general ensured that authorities would have the power to compel testimony and documents," Carrie Johnson reports for the Post. "[Nora R.] Dannehy, a longtime assistant U.S. attorney in Connecticut, in recent weeks has met with lawyers and government officials involved in the case. A grand jury in the District has issued subpoenas, the sources said."

At TPMMuckraker, Zachary Roth points to an "interesting nugget" in the Post report.

"D. Kyle Sampson, who served as the chief of staff to Gonzales until his March 2007 resignation, recently took a leave from his job as a partner at the law firm Hunton & Williams while the investigation proceeds," Johnson reported. "A spokeswoman for the law firm said he is on leave "'pending admission to the D.C. bar.'"

Roth notes that the DOJ's Inspector General report "found that Sampson's testimony was 'not credible' and 'unpersuasive.'"</wordzilla:extended>

Book: Murdoch 'Despises' O'Reilly

      <wordzilla:destination>http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Author_Murdoch_absolutely_despises_bullying_Bill_1128.html</wordzilla:destination>

A new book about media mogul Rupert Murdoch claims that he "absolutely despises" commentator Bill O'Reilly, the top-rated commentator on Murdoch's Fox News.

<wordzilla:extended>Politico received a pre-publication copy of Michael Wolff's The Man Who Owns the News, reporting that Murdoch is not only embarrassed at times by his ownership of Fox News, but that he "absolutely despises" O'Reilly, who is that network's top-rated personality.

"The embarrassment can no longer be missed," Wolff writes of Murdoch. "He barely pretends to hide the way he feels about Bill O'Reilly. And while it is not that he would give Fox up -- because the money is the money; success trumps all -- in the larger sense of who he is, he seems to want to hedge his bets."

Wolff adds that Fox CEO Roger Ailes shares Murdoch's opinion. "It is not just Murdoch (and everybody else at News Corp.'s highest levels) who absolutely despises Bill O'Reilly, the bullying, mean-spirited, and hugely successful evening commentator, but Roger Ailes himself who loathes him. Success, however, has cemented everyone to each other."</wordzilla:extended>

Florida's strict law banning adoption of children by gay people was found unconstitutional Tuesday by a state judge, allowing a gay foster parent to adopt children he's cared for since 2004. "There is no rational basis to prohibit gay parents from adopting," ruled Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Cindy Lederman.

President-elect Barack Obama's top choice to lead the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, CNN reported on Wednesday, citing multiple sources. The Democratic governor, a supporter and campaigner for Obama's presidential campaign, had been reported to be on a short list of people to fill cabinet posts in the new administration.

<wordzilla:extended>CNN also reported that Chicago businesswoman Penny Pritzker was Obama's pick for commerce secretary.</wordzilla:extended>

Churches file legal challenge to Prop 8

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.ucc.org/news/religious-bodies-issue-legal.html</wordzilla:destination>

Three settings of the United Church of Christ have filed a legal petition before the Supreme Court of California to challenge the validity of the voter-approved Proposition 8 which ended same-gender marriage in the state.
The General Synod of the United Church of Christ, as well as the UCC's Southern California Nevada Conference and Northern California Nevada Conference, joined other religious bodies in filing litigation on Nov. 17 that argues that Proposition 8 amounted to a constitutional "revision" because it took away a fundamental civil right. In California, a constitutional revision, unlike an amendment, requires legislative authorization in addition to voter approval.

<wordzilla:extended>"California's constitutional right of equal protection is sacrosanct," the legal challenge reads in its introduction. "Not even the electorate can take it away selectively at least not without a two-thirds vote of the legislature or a constitutional convention. This writ petition seeks to enforce that basic principle."

The executive committee of the UCC's Executive Council met by conference call on Nov. 16 to give its approval for the UCC General Synod to become a petitioner in the case, as recommended by the denomination's five-person Collegium of Officers and supported by UCC Nationwide Special Counsel Donald C. Clark.

Similarly, the boards of the UCC's two California Conferences also authorized their involvement. Other petitioners include the California Council of Churches; the Episcopal bishops of Los Angeles and California; the Progressive Jewish Alliance; the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations; and the UU Legislative Ministry in California.</wordzilla:extended>

Obama Picks Eric Holder for Attorney General

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/deadlineusa/2008/nov/18/obama-white-house1</wordzilla:destination>

Barack Obama has chosen Eric Holder, a former justice department official under Bill Clinton, to be his attorney general, Newsweek's Michael Isikoff reports. Holder was on the team that signed off on the pardon. If confirmed, he'll be the first African-American attorney general.

<wordzilla:extended>Holder is well liked in official Washington, although during his confirmation hearings Republicans may dredge up his role in Clinton's 11th-hour pardon of Marc Rich, a fugitive financier.</wordzilla:extended>

Uh Oh - Move over John Edwards?

      <wordzilla:destination>http://news.bostonherald.com/track/inside_track/view/2008_11_13_National_Enquirer_says_Cindy_McCain_is_a_two-timer/srvc=home&position=also</wordzilla:destination>

National Enquirer says Cindy McCain is a two-timer
First lady wannabe Cindy McCain had an affair with a long-haired man who resembles "a washed-up '80s rock musician," says the National Enquirer, and the supermarket tabloid claims to have the pictures to prove it.

<wordzilla:extended>Sen. John McCain's beer-heiress wife was caught locking lips and "acting very lovey-dovey" with her purported paramour at concerts and sporting events around her hometown of Phoenix over the past several years, sources told the tab.

The tonsil-hockey shot was taken on April 1, 2006, when Cindy and her unidentified companion attended the Tempe Music Festival, the Enquirer reported.

"To my amazement, Cindy had her hand on his shoulder and was kissing him passionately on his lips," the photographer told the tab.

A second spywitness spotted Cindy canoodling with her mystery man at the Moody Blues concert, where they were caught "passionately kissing and hugging," the source reported.

"I couldn't believe it. I remember thinking, Go get a room!' " a spy reported. "They kissed and cuddled. While other concertgoers stood up to cheer and sing, Cindy and the guy remained entwined in their seats."

Cindy, 54, whose father founded one of the largest Amheuser-Busch beer distributors in the country, is 18 years younger than her White House-wannabe spouse.

A McCain spokesperson declined comment on the report.

The senator, who gave his first post-election interview to Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" admitted that his loss was "tougher" on his wife and daughter Meghan. But, when asked how Cindy was doing, he answered "She's doing fine . . . very fine," he said.

The National Enquirer has a history of reporting political affairs. It was the first to expose former Sen. John Edwards' liason with former campaign staffer Rielle Hunter. The ex-presidential candidate admitted he had a fling with Hunter but vehemently denied that he was the father of her newborn baby, as the Enquirer alleged.</wordzilla:extended>

The Onset of Obama Derangement Syndrome

      <wordzilla:destination>http://hotair.com/archives/2008/11/11/the-onset-of-ods/</wordzilla:destination>

For the past seven-plus years, the Left has suffered from Bush Derangement Syndrome. Well, actually, the rest of us have suffered from their embrace of BDS, which one might think would inoculate us from any related maladies. As Jake Tapper notes, though, the onset of Obama Derangement Syndrome might prove that wrong:

<wordzilla:extended>We all remember "Bush derangement syndrome" defined by Charles Krauthammer as "the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal people in reaction to the policies, the presidency nay the very existence of George W. Bush."

We already need a name for the reverse disorder.

Rep. Paul Broun, R-Georgia, recently said that he fears President-elect Obama may create a security force akin to the Gestapo to impose a Marxist dictatorship.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Broun told The Associated Press. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may - may not, I hope not - but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."

Broun refers to this portion of a speech Obama gave in July in Colorado. The media dropped two sentences from its reporting of the speech, which set off critics when World Net Daily reported it:</wordzilla:extended>

The Sarah Palin Smokescreen

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.thenation.com/blogs/edcut/354368</wordzilla:destination>

"Here's the deal: Palin is the latest G.O.P. distraction," Bob Herbert wrote in a New York Times op-ed on Tuesday. "She's meant to shift attention away from the real issue of this campaign--the awful state of the nation after eight years of Republican rule. The Republicans are brilliant at distractions."

<wordzilla:extended>Herbert's right on target. Barack Obama honed in on that point in Denver too, "If you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare the voters. If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from. You make a big election about small things."

On cue, Sarah Palin attempted to paint an absurd caricature of Obama in her speech at the Republican Convention last night: "What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he's done turning back the waters and healing the planet? The answer is to make government bigger ... take more of your money ... give you more orders from Washington ... and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world."

More than anything, this election should be about the big issues of our time--ending a disastrous war, restoring America's reputation in the world and building an economy that works for more than just the very rich. The challenge for Democrats is to frame these issues in a way that connects with traditional American and progressive values, exposes Republican callousness and extremism, and in doing so trumps the GOP's political marketing which cynically and cleverly plays on symbolism. As George Lakoff wrote, "Just arguing the realities, the issues, the hard truths should be enough in times this bad, but the political mind and its response to symbolism cannot be ignored..... Democrats, in addition, need to call an extremist an extremist: to shine a light on the shared anti-democratic ideology of McCain and Palin, the same ideology shared by Bush and Cheney. They share values antithetical to our democracy."

More...</wordzilla:extended>
