Walker Uses Mortgage Fund on Budget

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) is using $26 million of its $140 million share in the national mortgage settlement to plug a state budget hole. The rest of the state's share of the $25 billion settlement will go toward helping homeowners hurt by foreclosure abuses. Walker, previously critical of using one-time money from legal settlements to balance the budget, said this was justified because the foreclosure crisis had a "direct impact on the economy."

Poll: 20% of Repubs Leaning Obama

A poll recently released by a conservative website found that 20 percent of Republicans are likely to vote for President Barack Obama. The survey, conducted by Wenzel Strategies for WorldNetDaily, showed that one in five Republicans are leaning towards or would "definitely" re-elect Obama. In contests against Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, Obama got more than 20 percent of support from Republicans. In a matchup with Ron Paul, 19 percent of Republicans chose the president. "[T]he bloody fight for the Republican presidential nomination -- by most estimations the nastiest GOP fight in memory -- has really hurt the images of the challengers in the eyes of both Republicans and, especially, independent voters," said pollster Fritz Wenzel.

Repug Chairman Sentenced To 4-12 years

Brett Feese, a former Republican leader in the state House of Representatives, was sentenced this morning to four to 12 years in state prison and fined $25,000 for his role in a state corruption scandal. Dauphin County Judge Richard Lewis also ordered the 57-year-old to pay $1 million in restitution and serve two years of probation. Mr. Feese, a onetime House Republican Campaign Committee chairman, was found guilty of all 40 charges against him in November. Prosecutors said Mr. Feese was involved in hiring out-of-state consultants with public money and diverting legislative employees to work on customized computer software to help elect more Republicans to the Legislature.

Cardinal Unapologizes for Child Sex Abuse

In an interview with Connecticut Magazine, Cardinal Edward Egan withdrew his 2002 apology for the Catholic Church's handling of the child molestation accusations against priests, which was once read in all New York parishes. Egan, the former archbishop of New York and former bishop of Bridgeport, said of the letter, "I never should have said that," and added, "I don't think we did anything wrong." Michael Brendan Dougherty writes, "Bishop Egan ran a diocese that was notoriously dangerous for children. Contrary to his claim, during his twelve-year enthronement at Bridgeport, Egan repeatedly failed to investigate priests where there were obvious signs of abuse."

Hannity Can't Accept Obama Got Bin Laden

Fox News host Sean Hannity, arguing that President Barack Obama shouldn't be credited with the U.S. finding and killing Osama bin Laden, said, "The public does give him credit for that. But it wouldn't have happened if he had his way, and I think that can be proved as well on tape." Hannity never explained what the tape is, or why he's never broadcast such evidence.

We are just where we have been. The Republican party does not have a candidate for president. The deck keeps being reshuffled, and different jokers keep popping up to the top. But the 75 percent of the party that does not want Mitt can't and won't coalesce over any of the alternatives. Nor will it warm up to the guy it keeps being told is the "inevitable" front-runner. The lack of GOP enthusiasm for its own field can be seen in its turnout -- down again last night, as it was in Romney's Florida victory.

Vile racism raised its ugly head during a boys basketball game near Pittsburgh on Friday when fans of a nearly all-white suburban school ran on the court in banana suits and made monkey noises to taunt the players for their rivals, who play for a school which is predominantly African-American. reported by a variety of Pittsburgh media outlets, the Monessen Valley Independent and WPXI prominent among them, the annual basketball rivalry game between Pittsburgh (Pa.) Brentwood High and Monessen (Pa.) High turned extremely ugly when the two teams tried to head to their respective locker rooms for halftime. Before the players could leave the floor, three fans from the visiting Brentwood student section ran onto the court in full-body banana suits.

Hoekstra's Racist Super Bowl Ad Isn't A Surprise

If you haven't seen the racist China bashing ad that Republican Pete Hoekstra ran during the Superbowl, here you go.

The ad doesn't make a lot of sense, but since it's a big topic of discussion within the US-China set at the moment, I figured I'd get it out there for your consideration (or amusement, anger, frustration, etc.). Hoekstra is running for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, a state where unemployment and China bashing go hand in hand. Add that to the Republican predilection towards racism, and really, the ad should not have caught anyone off guard.The latest "news" is that the image of the girl in the ad was labeled "Yellow Girl." No, seriously. I hope they paid that girl well.

GOP Congressman Duped by Onion

A Republican Congressman from Louisiana expressed outrage on Facebook over plans by Planned Parenthood to build an $8 billion "Abortionplex" -- a satire published by The Onion a year ago. Rep. John Fleming's Facebook account linked the story with his comment, "More on Planned Parenthood, abortion by the wholesale." A spokesman for Fleming, a second-term Republican and family practice doctor, confirmed that the link was posted but would not comment further. Before the link was removed, one of Fleming's constituents commented, "The Onion is satire. How exactly did you get elected?"

550 File Abuse Claims on Diocese

More than 550 people alleging sex abuse by Catholic priests or church employees have filed claims against the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in bankruptcy proceedings, the New York Times reports. The archdiocese is seeking dismissal of 95 percent of the claims -- filed by people whose incidents are beyond the statute of limitations, those who already have settlements or who were allegedly abuse by people working for the church rather than clerics. "I'm very angry," said Jerry Hoekman, who says he was repeatedly molested by a priest when he was 11 in 1973. "To know that they want to shove it under the rug when it's still so vivid in my head I can make a blueprint of his house? What about this image I live with every day?"

A GOP operative who won plaudits for bolstering Mitt Romney's recent debate performances is not being retained by the front-runner's campaign, an apparent victim of internal tensions over staff receiving too much credit for the candidate's comeback, POLITICO has learned.

Brett O'Donnell, a former top aide to Michele Bachmann, has been paid for his work assisting Romney in the crucial Florida debates but was not offered a formal role with the campaign as he expected, according to Republican sources familiar with the situation.

After O'Donnell was identified last week as advising Romney and then highlighted in subsequent news accounts as being one of the reasons behind the former Massachusetts governor's improved debate performances, Romney campaign officials grew uneasy.

Top Indiana Official Guilty of Fraud

Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White (R) was convicted Friday of six felony counts including perjury, theft and voter fraud and will be removed from office. White, 42, faced seven counts related to accusations he lied about his home address while serving on a town council so he could retain a $1,000-a-month stipend. White claimed to be living in his ex-wife's basement, but documents showed he lived outside the district with his fiancee.

Ann Romney's father, Edward Davies, was a NASA engineer who was reportedly an atheist and opponent of organized religion even as his children all converted to Mitt Romney's Mormon religion. But after he died Romney had his father-in-law baptized posthumously in the Mormon faith. On his HBO show, Real Time host Bill Maher donned a wizard's hat and waved a wand over a photo of Davies, pronouncing him unbaptized. "By the power granted to me by the Blair Witch, I call upon the Mormon spirits to leave your body the fuck alone," Maher said.
