Joey Chestnut kept the coveted Mustard Belt in the United States Saturday, eating a world-record 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island, New York. Rival Takeru Kobayashi came in second with 64 1/2. This is Chestnut's third straight win. "July 4 isn't a holiday for these men," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "It's going to be a day of reckoning."

Marc Ambinder: Assuming there is no scandal shoe about to drop, to understand what Gov. Sarah Palin is doing, we ought to begin by taking her at her word. The elites v. Sarah Palin is just the latest incarnation in the great American culture war, and Palin no longer wants to fight with one hand tied behind her back.

On the eve of the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, former competitive eaters report weight gains of 100 pounds, stomach woes, chest pains and other health problems from their pursuit of gluttony. "Any way you look at it, it's not healthy," said Dave "Coondog" O'Karma, a retired gurgitator. "I don't think loading your body with fat and salt is healthy."

<wordzilla:extended>In an opinion piece published in the <i>American Journal of Radiology</i>, doctors warned of possible "morbid obesity, profound gastroparesis, intractable nausea and vomiting, and even the need for a gastrectomy [surgical removal of all or part of the stomach]. Despite its growing popularity, competitive speed eating is a potentially self-destructive form of behavior."</wordzilla:extended>

Hedges: Take Back the Media to Save Democracy

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/06/29-2</wordzilla:destination>

Chris Hedges: The ability of the corporate state to pacify the country by extending credit and providing cheap manufactured goods to the masses is gone. The pernicious idea that democracy lies in the choice between competing brands and the freedom to accumulate vast sums of personal wealth at the expense of others has collapsed. Those who care about the plight of the working class and the poor must begin to mobilize quickly or we will lose our last opportunity to save our embattled democracy. The most important struggle will be to wrest the organs of communication from corporations that use mass media to demonize movements of social change and empower proto-fascist movements such as the Christian right.

<wordzilla:extended>The battle ahead will be fought outside the journalistic mainstream, he said. The old forms of journalism are dying or have sold their soul to corporate manipulation and celebrity culture. We must now wed fact to rhetoric. We must appeal to reason and emotion. We must not be afraid to openly take sides, to speak, photograph or write on behalf of the disempowered.</wordzilla:extended>

Judge: End Disposable Marriage

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/07/02/sears.family.divorce/index.html</wordzilla:destination>

As a judge I have long held a front row seat to the wreckage left behind by our culture of disposable marriage and casual divorce. No-fault divorce was a response to a very real problem. The social and legal landscape that preceded it largely prevented casual divorce, but it often trapped people in abusive marriages. But no-fault divorce's broad acceptance as an unquestioned social good helped usher in an era that fundamentally altered the seriousness with which marriage is viewed.

The last time Indiana missed its deadline for passing a budget and had to shut down the government was during the Civil War.
