'Last Lecture' Co-Author Zaslow Dies

Jeffrey Zaslow, co-author of the best-seller The Last Lecture with the late Randy Pausch, and a newspaper columnist, was killed on Friday in a car crash in Michigan. Zaslow's car lost control on a snowy road and collided with a tractor-trailer. The subject of his current book, bridal shop owner Shelley Becker Mueller, told her in a phone call "he was nervous about the roads and wanted to leave so he could be home when his daughter got out of school."

Madonna Stalker Escapes Mental Hospital

A man who served 10 years in prison for stalking Madonna and was shot by her security guards at her home in 1996 has escaped a Los Angeles mental facility. Robert Dewey Hoskins, 54, "is a very psychotic man when not taking his medication and has very violent tendencies," police said. According to trial testimony, Hoskins told Madonna's bodyguard that if "he couldn't have me, he was going to slice my throat from ear to ear."

Obama Pulls Out on Birth Control

President Barack Obama announced a compromise Friday over contraception insurance coverage for female employees at religiously affiliated institutions. Under the new plan, religiously affiliated universities and hospitals won't be forced to offer contraception coverage to their employees, but insurers must cover it when they don't. "No woman's health should depend on who she is or where she works or how much money she makes." Obama said.

Dad Shoots Bratty Daughter's Laptop

Angered by a profanity-laced post his 15-year-old daughter had put on her Facebook wall and hidden from her parents, a North Carolina man posted a video on YouTube shooting the laptop multiple times with his .45 and hollow-point rounds. "Whenever you're not grounded, whatever year that happens to be, you can have a new laptop when you buy a new laptop and when you pay me back the $130 for the software I spent on yours yesterday," said Tommy Jordan. "I hope you've enjoyed your little fiasco on Facebook."

States Pass 'Tim Tebow' Bills

Twenty-five states have passed bills allowing home-schooled students to play sports at public schools, a movement sparked by an obscure Denver Broncos quarterback who played for Nease High School near Jacksonville, Fl., despite never stepping foot in the place as a student. A bill before Virginia's legislature is hotly debated. "I support choice, but if you've chosen that, you can't use public schools as an a la carte system," said William Bosher, a former state superintendent of schools. "It's football today. Tomorrow it's a National Academy of Sciences project. The next day it's homecoming queen. Where does it begin and end?"

Dave Weigel: They all laughed at Ron Paul. They all laughed when he took a stage in Minnesota, having come in a solid second place, and reminded the faithful of a "little thing called delegates!" They were serious about it. Paul's people believe that they understand the delegate process, and that the media does not. There is truth here: The delegate process is confusing, and I assume that Paul supporters have used their four years of organizing and studying in a fruitful manner.

CNN Suspends Roland Martin

CNN has suspended political analyst Roland Martin for Twitter posts during the Super Bowl that were called anti-gay. After a commercial showed soccer star David Beckham in underwear, Martin tweeted, "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H & M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him." Martin also tweeted, "Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass."

Callista Gingrich Keeping Quiet

Though Newt Gingrich's wife Callista has been a constant visual presence on the campaign trail and during his election night speeches, she's rarely made any comments for public consumption. When asked in Iowa if the public would be hearing more from her, she said, "If R.C. says yes." Campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond controls the messaging strategy. Newt Gingrich said, "We're waiting for R.C. to unleash her and he's being very measured and paced."

Historian Guilty of Stealing Documents

A historian pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiring to steal documents from the Maryland Historical Society and other institutions. Barry Landau, 63, and his assistant Jason Savedoff, 24, were caught with 80 stolen documents in their possession, including presidential inaugural ball invitations and programs worth $500,000. The FBI seized 10,000 historical documents from Landau's apartment -- 2,000 of which have been traced to libraries and other archives.

Woman's New Jaw Made by 3D Printer

An 83-year-old woman in the Netherlands was fitted with a titanium lower jaw that was created by a 3D printer, a first-of-its-kind surgery that occurred in June but recently publicized. "It used a laser beam to melt successive thin layers of titanium powder together to build the part," said Ruben Wauthle, an engineer at the metal-parts manufacturer LayerWise, which made the jaw.
