Air Pollution May Reduce Global Warming

Air pollution may be helping the fight against global warming by enhancing the ability of plants to absorb carbon dioxide, scientists say. Since the 1960s, increased levels of atmospheric pollution have enhanced plant productivity by as much as one quarter, research has found. In terms of carbon dioxide, this means that an extra 10% has been stored in the soil.

Homely British singing sensation Susan Boyle has been offered $1 million to make a porn flick.

The plain Jane superstar with the spellbinding voice would have to lose her virginity on camera to earn the seven-figure payday from Los Angeles-based Kick Ass Films.

"We want to get this movie shot and out while Susan has the world's attention," said Kick Ass boss Mark Kulkis. "Besides, after 47 years of virginity, I'm sure Susan is also anxious to get something cracking as soon as possible."

Boyle, who says she's never been kissed let alone bedded, has taken the entire world by storm since she appeared on the American Idol-style TV show "Britain's Got Talent."

Lawyer Claims Discrimination After 'Ghetto Court' Remark

Kathleen Leavey, who served briefly as the city of Detroit's corporation counsel before she was forced to step down over a "ghetto court" remark, filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against the city, the 36th District Court and Chief Judge Marylin Atkins. Leavey, who is white, alleges race discrimination and that she was retaliated against for exercising her rights of free speech. Leavey resigned as interim corporation counsel in January, shortly after telling a 36th District Court official the court acted like a "ghetto court."

University of Maryland president keeps commencement prayer

The University of Maryland, College Park will retain its tradition of offering a prayer before its commencement exercises, university President C.D. Mote Jr. said Thursday. His decision to maintain the two-minute prayer and moment of silence runs counter to a recommendation this week from the University Senate, which voted 32-14 to stop it. The Senate is composed of students, faculty and staff, and advises Mote on major issues. Senators had said the prayer was noninclusive and not appropriate for a public institution. But in a statement, Mote said, "For many people, a prayer of gratitude and a moment of reflection are an important part of our commencement tradition."
