SCOTUS Smacks Down Obama; Requires Warrants For GPS Monitors

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/01/scotus-gps-ruling/</wordzilla:destination>

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that law enforcement authorities need a probable-cause warrant from a judge to affix a GPS device to a vehicle and monitor its every move.

<wordzilla:extended>The decision in what is arguably the biggest Fourth Amendment case in the computer age, rejected the Obama administration's position. The government had told the high court that it could even affix GPS devices on the vehicles of all members of the Supreme Court, without a warrant.</wordzilla:extended>

DHS: Sorry for Elderly Strip-Searches

The Department of Homeland Security has admitted two elderly women should not have been strip-searched at Kennedy Airport by TSA screeners. Federal officials originally had insisted screening procedures were followed after Ruth Sherman, 89, and Lenore Zimmerman, 85, went public with accounts of humiliating strip searches. "It is not standard operating procedure for colostomy devices to be visually inspected," said Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Betsy Markey.

Obama and Romney Are Not "Moderates"

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.drudge.com/news/152508/obama-and-romney-not-moderates</wordzilla:destination>

I think it's about time we stop referring to allegedly middle-of-the-road candidates like Obama and Romney as "moderates." There is nothing "moderate" about detaining American citizens in military prisons without trial. There is nothing "moderate" about flying drones all over the middle east and blowing people up. There is nothing "moderate" about spending $1,560,000,000,000.00 more than you take in every year. There is nothing "moderate" about a potential invasion of Iran. There is nothing "moderate" about warrantless wiretapping of Americans' telephones.

<wordzilla:extended>None of their most important and far-reaching policies can be considered "moderate" by any stretch of the word. They might be "typical," but they are extremist and dangerous regardless.</wordzilla:extended>

Politifact: Scott Walker Cancer Cuts Story Was Bogus

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin/statements/2012/jan/06/gwen-moore/wisconsin-gov-scott-walker-ended-planned-parenthoo/</wordzilla:destination>

Did Walker kill a cancer-screening program for poor women?<p>In a word: No.

<wordzilla:extended>Cancer screenings were never provided by Planned Parenthood -- its contract was for helping women sign up for and get the screenings. The screenings are done by other health care providers.
<p>Walker's administration did end Planned Parenthood's contract -- but neither the assistance Planned Parenthood provided, nor the screenings themselves, ever ended. Indeed, the change put the four counties on par with how the program is handled in most of the rest of the state.</wordzilla:extended>

Wisconsin Unions Lie About Teacher Layoffs

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin/statements/2011/nov/28/wisconsin-education-association-council/weac-says-state-budget-cuts-led-nearly-4000-educat/</wordzilla:destination>

In a Tuesday, November 15 news release blasting Scott Walker, Wisconsin's largest teachers' union made the following claim: "97 percent of school districts received less state aid this year than last, resulting in nearly 4,000 educator layoffs and larger class sizes." The union attributed it number to a widely reported survey of schools, released Nov. 10, 2011. But that survey -- of more than 80 percent of school districts -- showed about 3,400 fewer <b>school staff</b> in place now compared to last year.

<wordzilla:extended>Union spokeswoman Christina Brey told Politifact that characterizing all the staff losses as "layoffs" was defensible. <b>She said it was a general term, including reductions due to retirements and non-renewal of contracts as well as layoffs.</b> Politifact found that about 1,500 were from actual layoffs. About half were from retirements and about one third from non-renewal of contracts.</wordzilla:extended>

Romney Admin. Destroyed All E-Mail Records

Just before Mitt Romney left the Massachusetts governor's office and first ran for president, 11 of his top aides purchased their state-issued computer hard drives, and the Romney administration's e-mails were all wiped from a server, according to interviews and records obtained by the Globe.

<wordzilla:extended>Romney administration officials had the remaining computers in the governor's office replaced just before Governor Deval Patrick's staff showed up to take power in January 2007, according to Mark Reilly, Patrick's chief legal counsel.
<p>As a result, Patrick's office, which has been bombarded with inquiries for records from the Romney era, has no electronic record of any Romney administration e-mails, Reilly said.</wordzilla:extended>

As of Wednesday, the official website of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin was advertising a recall petition drive at a cemetery, literally stating that "We will be taking names from headstones and making recall petitions with the names we find."

<wordzilla:extended>The event has since been removed from their website, but not before 71 people signed up.</wordzilla:extended>
