Biker Gang Convicted of 44 Counts of Murder

In the largest number of murder convictions ever produced at Canadian criminal trial, six members of the Bandidos biker gang were all found guilty on multiple counts of first-degree murder yesterday in the 2006 slaying of eight rivals. A jury returned 44 verdicts of first-degree murder and four of manslaughter.

France Convicts Scientology of Fraud

PARIS The French branch of the Church of Scientology was convicted of fraud and fined nearly $900,000 on Tuesday by a Paris court. But the judges did not ban the church entirely, as the prosecution had demanded, saying that a change in the law prevented such an action for fraud. The church said it would appeal.

The New York Times reports that last month, senior White House adviser David Axelrod and Fox News chief executive Roger Ailes met secretly to defuse tensions between the Obama administration and the network. So much for that. There's now open combat between presidential aides and Fox. "We simply decided to stop abiding by the fiction, which is aided and abetted by the mainstream press, that Fox is a traditional news organization," said Dan Pfeiffer, the deputy White House communications director.

US Troops Storm Afghani Hopital

The U.S. troops came to the hospital looking for Taliban insurgents late at night last Wednesday. Fange said they kicked in doors, tied up four hospital employees and two family members of patients, and forced patients out of beds during their search. When they left two hours later, the unit ordered hospital staff to inform coalition forces if any wounded militants were admitted, and the military would decide if they could be treated, Fange said. The staff refused, he said. "That would put our staff at risk and make the hospital a target."

Rights Commision: Internet Hate Speech Law Uncontitutional

A provision in the Human Rights Act that bans hate speech on the internet is unconstitutional, according to the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

In a decision released Wednesday, the commission's tribunal dismissed a complaint filed against Marc Lemire, a webmaster who runs freedomsite.org, a site that bills itself as "Canada's freedom resource center."

Among the hardware: a treadmill whose acronym spells out comedian Stephen Colbert's last name. The talk show host had asked viewers to participate in a NASA competition to name one last space station module. Instead of hewing to the NASA-approved suggestions Serenity, Legacy, Earthrise, and Venture they nominated "Colbert," which won the vote. NASA stepped in, choosing to name the node "Tranquility," but sportingly dubbed its new treadmill the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill (COLBERT).
