Warming Boosts Strongest Storms

      <wordzilla:destination>http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7596643.stm</wordzilla:destination>

The strongest tropical storms are becoming even stronger as the world's oceans warm, scientists have confirmed. Analysis of satellite data shows that in the last 25 years, strong cyclones, hurricanes and typhoons have become more frequent in most of the tropics.

A new study by climate scientists behind the controversial 1998 "hockey stick" graph suggests their earlier analysis was broadly correct.
Michael Mann's team analysed data for the last 2,000 years, and concluded that Northern Hemisphere temperatures now are "anomalously warm".

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article4660924.ece</wordzilla:destination>

The elephant's memory is legendary, but in a large, grey surprise to science the mighty Asian elephant turns out to have a distinct flair for maths as well

<wordzilla:extended>Under carefully controlled experimental conditions essentially comprising a large cage and two buckets of assorted fruit one elephant at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo managed to get its sums right 87 per cent of the time. A slightly less gifted pachyderm across the country in Kyoto scored a still respectable 69 per cent.

--In other news, Vernon still can't calculate simple percentages.</wordzilla:extended>

Major ice-shelf loss for Canada

      <wordzilla:destination>http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7595441.stm</wordzilla:destination>

The ice shelves in Canada's High Arctic have lost a colossal area this year, scientists report. The floating tongues of ice attached to Ellesmere Island, which have lasted for thousands of years, have seen almost a quarter of their cover break away.

<wordzilla:extended>One of them, the 50 sq km (20 sq miles) Markham shelf, has completely broken off to become floating sea-ice.

Researchers say warm air temperatures and reduced sea-ice conditions in the region have assisted the break-up.

"These substantial calving events underscore the rapidity of changes taking place in the Arctic," said Trent University's Dr Derek Mueller.

"These changes are irreversible under the present climate."</wordzilla:extended>

China to launch third manned space flight

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=080902063908.g87goado&show_article=1</wordzilla:destination>

China has brought forward the launch date of its third manned space flight to late September, a report said Tuesday.

<wordzilla:extended>The launch of Shenzhou VII is now expected to take place between September 17 -- the end of the Beijing Paralympics -- and China's National Day on October 1, Hong Kong newspaper Wen Wei Po said, citing unnamed sources.

The period offered the best launch window for Shenzhou VII, the source told the Chinese-language newspaper, without giving any more details.

The mission will blast off from China's Jiuquan launch centre in northwest Gansu province and land in northern Inner Mongolia province, Wen Wei Po said.

Drug War Terror Spreads in Mexico

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article4636533.ece</wordzilla:destination>

Eleven decapitated bodies have been found outside the city of Merida on the Yucatan peninsula, heightening fears that Mexico's recent descent into violence has reached even heavily protected tourist areas.

<wordzilla:extended>All the bodies showed signs of torture and were tattooed with star signs and the letter Z--, suggesting that they had fallen victim to the country's growing drug war, which has left more than 2,700 dead so far this year.

Merida is a popular stop-off point for tourists on their way to visit the Mayan pyramids at Chichen Itza. On the other side of the Yucatan peninsula is Cancun, a Las Vegas-style holiday destination popular with US tourists; an hour or so farther south of Cancun is the resort town of Playa del Carmen, where many US hotel chains have built five-star properties.

Perhaps inspired by the insurgency in Iraq, Mexican drug gangs have started to use mass beheadings as a macabre public relations tool.</wordzilla:extended>

'Big Dry' turns farms into deserts

      <wordzilla:destination>http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7577528.stm</wordzilla:destination>

In the once-lush fields of South Australia, on land that borders the state's world famous Lower Lakes, farmer Nigel Treloar rounds up the herd with the help of his off-road motorbike.
It is one of the few things that has got easier as a result of Australia's worst drought in 100 years.

<wordzilla:extended>That is because he used to have 800 cows and now he only milks 250. There is not enough irrigation water from the nearby lakes to sustain a bigger herd.

"This area is on the very brink of environmental collapse," said Nigel's wife, Melanie. "You only have to look around to see that."

"You see the lack of birds and the lack of life. You smell it. You can smell the water. If you walk out into the lake bed you can burn your feet because of the acid sulphates."

"It's very real and it's happening right in front of us."

In recent years, the number of farms in the area has dropped from 55 to just 10.</wordzilla:extended>

Oxygen-Evolving Catalyst in Neutral Water

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/short/321/5892/1072</wordzilla:destination>

Originally published in Science Express on 31 July 2008Science 22 August 2008:Vol. 321. no. 5892, pp. 1072 - 1075
In Situ Formation of an Oxygen-Evolving Catalyst in Neutral Water Containing Phosphate and Co2+Matthew W. Kanan and Daniel G. Nocera*

<wordzilla:extended>The utilization of solar energy on a large scale requires its storage. In natural photosynthesis, energy from sunlight is used to rearrange the bonds of water to oxygen and hydrogen equivalents. The realization of artificial systems that perform "water splitting" requires catalysts that produce oxygen from water without the need for excessive driving potentials. Here we report such a catalyst that forms upon the oxidative polarization of an inert indium tin oxide electrode in phosphate-buffered water containing cobalt (II) ions. A variety of analytical techniques indicates the presence of phosphate in an approximate 1:2 ratio with cobalt in this material. The pH dependence of the catalytic activity also implicates the hydrogen phosphate ion as the proton acceptor in the oxygen-producing reaction. This catalyst not only forms in situ from earth-abundant materials but also operates in neutral water under ambient conditions.
