Housing Market Conditions Best In Seven Years

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2013/06/17/housing-reaches-major-milestone-in-june.aspx</wordzilla:destination>

By John Maxfield : The U.S. housing market hit a critical milestone today for the first time in more than seven years. According to a monthly survey conducted by the National Association of Home Builders, a majority of builders now view conditions in the market as "good," rather than "poor."

<wordzilla:extended>As you can see in this chart, the June reading of 52 was the first time the association's Housing Market Index came in above 50 since April of 2006 -- a reading of more than 50 indicates that more builders view sales conditions as good than do poor.

"Surpassing this important benchmark reflects the fact that builders are seeing better market conditions as demand for new homes increases," said NAHB chairman Rick Judson. "With the low inventory of existing homes, an increasing number of buyers are gravitating toward new homes."

The news adds substance to positive pronouncements from some of the nation's biggest homebuilders over the last few months.</wordzilla:extended>

A former commander of a Nazi SS military unit has lived without detection in Minneapolis for the past six decades, Associated Press reports. Michael Karkoc, 94, served as a top commander in the Ukrainian Self-Defense Legion, a unit accused of burning villages filled with women and children. Honorath Banach was 20 when she fled a Polish village before it was torched by the Nazi legion. "There was so much suffering, so many orphans, so much pain," Banach said. "Everything was burned down, even the fences, the trees. I could not even find my house."

<wordzilla:extended>Karkoc's son Andriy Karkos read a statement denying any involvement by his father in war crimes. "That's the god's honest truth," he said. "My father was never a Nazi."</wordzilla:extended>

By Stephen C. WebsterTuesday, May 28, 2013 10:08 EDTResidents of Londrina, Brazil recently filmed a maladjusted goat on a hilarious rampage as he terrorized bystanders, motorcyclists and even the cameraman, knocking people over and running them off the road before he was finally subdued. The footage shows the belligerent billy headbutting an older woman onto the ground, drawing the ire of a man nearby who tries to kick the goat in the face. Unsuccessful, he engages the crazed kid in what looks like a game of tag around a tree, flailing at the creature as it stares him down.

WebsterTuesday, May 28, 2013 9:31 EDTA group of storm chasers in a specially-designed tornado intercept vehicle took a direct hit from a funnel cloud in Kansas on Monday, walking away from the encounter with a stunning video from inside one of the most destructive environments on the planet. The video below features the TIV 2, an Armadillo-like vehicle owned by IMAX filmmaker and Discovery Channel "Storm Chasers" star Sean Casey. Casey and compatriot Brandon Ivey were in Kansas where a supercell thunderstorm belched out several smaller tornadoes on Monday.

Stocks bounced back from Thursday's loss to put the S&P 500 (^INX) back up to yet a new record at 1667.<p>While the major indices were only up modestly throughout the day, we saw a big acceleration in the last hour of trading, with the star of the day being the the small-cap Russell 2000 (INDEXRUSSELL:RUT), which nearly pierced the widely watched 1000 level. Additionally, US Treasuries pulled back following yesterday's pop, implying that there is still a possible rotation trade from bonds to stocks, which may be contributing to the market's astounding momentum in 2013.<p>

<wordzilla:extended>In fact, according to Minyanville's technical analysis maven Jeff Cooper, the Dow Jones Industrial Average's (INDEXDJX:.DJI) current run is the longest one without a three-day pullback in over a hundred years.
<p>Today's positive action was likely boosted by two pieces of economic data. The May University of Michigan Sentiment Survey came in at 83.7, which was ahead of the 77.9 consensus. And within that report, expectations regarding the economic conditions and outlook showed marked improvement</wordzilla:extended>

Stocks closed out the first quarter on a high note with the S&P 500 piercing through levels last seen in 2007 to end at a record high near 1,570 and the Dow logging its strongest quarter in 15 years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared an impressive 11.25 percent in the first three months of the year to log its best first-quarter performance since 1998. Interestingly, the blue-chip index has never finished a year in negative territory when the first quarter is up at least 8 percent.

<wordzilla:extended>"This market's had a phenomenal run and we've been anticipating a cooling period –- we thought that the Cyprus event would have been a perfect opportunity to do so, but we just keep going higher," said Troy Logan, managing director and senior economist at Warren Financial Service. "What's driving that is the fundamental positives."</wordzilla:extended>
