Comittee Question State Dept Role in Iraq Oil Deal

Bush administration officials knew that a Texas oil company with close ties to President Bush was planning to sign an oil deal with the regional Kurdistan government that ran counter to American policy and undercut Iraq’s central government, a Congressional committee has concluded. The conclusions were based on e-mail messages and other documents that the committee released Wednesday.

<wordzilla:extended>United States policy is to warn companies that they incur risks in signing contracts until Iraq passes an oil law and to strengthen Iraq’s central government. The Kurdistan deal, by ceding responsibility for writing contracts directly to a regional government, infuriated Iraqi officials. But State Department officials did nothing to discourage the deal and in some cases appeared to welcome it, the documents show.
<p>The company, Hunt Oil of Dallas, signed the deal with Kurdistan’s semiautonomous government last September. Its chief executive, Ray L. Hunt, a close political ally of President Bush, briefed an advisory board to Mr. Bush on his contacts with Kurdish officials before the deal was signed.

DNC Protests Will Be Behind Fence

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_9744092</wordzilla:destination>

The fence around the public demonstration zone outside the Democratic National Convention will be chicken wire or chain link, authorities revealed in U.S. District Court today, and <i>may</i> allow protestors to be seen and heard by delegates going in and out of the Pepsi Center during the convention.

<wordzilla:extended>But the American Civil Liberties Union and several advocacy groups have filed an amended complaint to their lawsuit against the U.S. Secret Service and the city and county of Denver that says protestors and demonstrators may have their First Amendment rights violated by security restrictions.
<p>The ACLU has said it wants to avoid the conditions that existed during the 2004 convention in Boston, where protesters were caged, infuriating First Amendment advocates.</wordzilla:extended>

China's Red Tide Threatens Olympic Events

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/06/30/asia/china.php</wordzilla:destination>

With less than six weeks before it plays host to the Olympic sailing regatta, (China) has mobilized thousands of people and an armada of small boats to clean up an algae bloom that is choking large stretches of the coastline and threatening to impede the Olympic competition. Xinhua reported that algae currently covered a third of the coastal waters designated for the Olympic races.

<wordzilla:extended>Water quality has been a concern for the sailing events, given that many coastal Chinese cities dump untreated sewage into the sea. At the same time, rivers and tributaries emptying into coastal waters are often contaminated with high levels of nitrates from agricultural and industrial runoff. These nitrates contribute to the red tides of algae that often bloom along sections of China's coastline.</wordzilla:extended>

"While significant progress has been made, the schedule and cost estimates of the rebuilding effort that have been communicated to the public are not realistic," the report's author, Christopher O.
A former head of Mossad warned that Israel has 12 months to destroy Iran's nuclear program or risk coming under nuclear attack itself (and) that Israel might have to act sooner if Barack Obama wins the US presidential election. <p>Mr Shavit warned that he had no doubt Iran intended to use a nuclear weapon once it had the capability, and that Israel must conduct itself accordingly.
