Bush on Auto Bailouts: 'I'd Do it Again'

At the annual convention of the National Automobile Dealers Association, former President George W. Bush defended the auto industry bailouts that began during his term and were completed by his successor, President Barack Obama. "I'd do it again," Bush said. "Sometimes circumstances get in the way of philosophy ... I didn't want there to be 21 percent unemployment."

Corporate Taxes Lowest in Decades

As a percentage of profits, corporations are paying less in taxes than they have in 40 years, the Wall Street Journal reports. Thanks in part to federal tax breaks, corporations paid out just 12.1 percent of their 2011 profits in taxes, according to the Congressional Budget Office -- well below the country's top marginal corporate tax rate of 35 percent. As the Journal notes, it's the lowest percentage corporations have paid since 1972. The CBO's numbers undercut the conservative claim that the United States places a higher tax burden on corporations than almost any other first-world nation.

Gingrich Backer Probed for Bribes

The casino company run by Sheldon Adelson, Newt Gingrich's principal financial backer, is being investigated by Department of Justice and the Securities Exchange Commission for alleged bribery of foreign officials, ABC News reports. Adelson and his wife have given at least $10 million to the pro-Gingrich Super PAC Winning our Future. Adelson owns a 49 percent stake in the Sands casino chain, which operates a casino in Macau, a Chinese region where gambling involves "widespread corruption, organized crime and money laundering," according to a U.S. agency.

Donald Trump Mulling 3rd Party Bid

Donald Trump's top political adviser told ABC News he's speaking to "high-level political operatives" to explore a third-party presidential bid on behalf of the real estate mogul, in a sign that Trump may not quite be done with the 2012 presidential race just yet.

"I can confirm that over the past two weeks I have spoken with many high-level political operatives, campaign managers, finance directors -- some of whom I have spoken to in the past. Most are new people from all over the country," said Michael Cohen, executive vice president at the Trump Organization and special counsel to the reality-TV star.

Independents More Down on Romney

Since November, Mitt Romney's standing among independents has dropped by 20 percent in the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. Once rated somewhat or very negatively by 22 percent of independents, he's now rated somewhat or very negatively by 42 percent of independents. Romney was outpolling President Barack Obama 47 to 34 percent among those voters in November, but now trails the president 44 to 36 percent.

2 More Walker Aides Arrested

Two staffers who worked for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) when he was Milwaukee county executive were charged Thursday with illegally doing extensive political work while paid by taxpayers at county jobs. Kelly Rindfleisch, Walker's deputy chief of staff at the county and his current state Medicaid chief, faces four felony counts for work he did in the unsuccessful lieutenant governor campaign of Bret Davis. Rindfleisch told a friend in an Internet chat, "half of what I'm doing is policy for the campaign," according to the criminal complaint filed against him. Darlene Wink, Walker's constituent services coordinator, faces two misdemeanour counts.

Wounded Soldier Gets War Puppy Back

A wounded soldier has been reunited with Smoke Pup Barbarian, a puppy he adopted on the front lines. Donny Eslinger, 20, acquired the dog while on a tour of duty in Afghanistan in exchange for three cigarettes -- which is how it got the name. Eslinger suffered a broken leg, broken ribs and multiple internal injuries in a September 2011 mortar attack. When Eslinger was flown to Germany for treatment, Smoke was left behind. "Many of us in his Platoon would love nothing more than to see Smoke reunited with Donny," his squad leader said in a letter. "It would be the only decent thing we would see come from this place."

Steven Colbert: Newt's a Southern Gentleman

Sometimes Newt Gingrich doesn't get enough credit for honesty.

At least that's what comedian Stephen Colbert said Friday when speaking about the allegations that Newt Gingrich's second wife made about the former Speaker's request for an open marriage.

"Honesty is the best policy. Here's the thing that I don't think Newt Gingrich gets enough credit for: a lot of politicians screw around on their wives, but he was enough of a gentleman to ask permission. That's a Southern gentleman. That's what Robert E. Lee would have done," quipped Colbert on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

GM World's No. 1 Automaker

GM sales for 2011 total 9.03 million, above projected Toyota sales for the year of 7.9 million. GM's largest brand Chevrolet reported an all-time record of 4.76 million sales in its 100th year.

Poll: 54% Blame Bush for Economy

A majority of Americans believe that former President George W. Bush is more responsible than President Barack Obama for the current economic problems in the country, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. The poll found that 54 percent blame Bush, 29 percent blame Obama, 9 percent blame both and 6 percent blame neither. Among independents, 57 percent blame Bush and 25 percent blame Obama.

Pundit Tony Blankely Dies

Tony Blankley, a conservative commentator, Ronald Reagan speechwriter and former editorial page editor of the Washington Times, died late Saturday after battling stomach cancer. He was 63. "Tony grew up with this deep passionate commitment, that I think he got from his dad, for freedom," said Newt Gingrich, who employed Blankley as an aide from 1990 to 1997.

Mitt Romney Plan Raises Taxes On Poor, Helps Millionaires

WASHINGTON -- Republican Mitt Romney's tax plan would increase taxes on low-income families while cutting taxes for the middle-class and the rich, according to an independent study released Thursday.

On average, households making less than $20,000 would see their taxes increase by more than 60 percent, said the Tax Policy Center, a Washington research group that studied the Romney plan.

Households making between $50,000 and $75,000 would get small tax cuts, averaging 2.2 percent, or about $250, the study said. People making more than $1 million would get tax cuts averaging 15 percent, or about $146,000.

Employers add 200,000 jobs, jobless rate falls to 8.5%

U.S. employment grew solidly last month, capping a strengthening trend in the nation's job market in the second half of 2011. The economy's payrolls increased by 200,000 in December, the U.S. Labor Department reported Friday. The data surpassed economists' expectations and mark a six-month stretch in which the economy generated 100,000 jobs or more in each month.

The nation's jobless rate slipped to 8.5 percent, the lowest in nearly 3 years, from a revised 8.7 percent reading for the previous month, adding to the upbeat tone of the monthly report.
