Self-proclaimed white nationalist Richard Spencer led a large group of demonstrators carrying torches and chanting "You will not replace us" Saturday in Charlottesville, protesting plans to remove a Confederate monument that has played an outsize role in this year's race for Virginia governor. "What brings us together is that we are white, we are a people, we will not be replaced," Spencer said at an afternoon protest, the first of two rallies he led in the town where he once attended the University of Virginia. At the second rally, dozens of torch-bearing protesters gathered in a city park Saturday evening and chanted "You will not replace us" and "Russia is our friend," local television footage shows. Spencer was not shown addressing that gathering, but he tweeted a photo of himself standing in the crowd carrying what appeared to be a bamboo tiki torch.

More FTA:

Spencer was in Charlottesville to protest a City Council vote to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee (R-VA). A court injunction, filed by racist ------, has halted the removal for six months.

The statue has become a rallying cry for Corey Stewart, a white supremacist gubernatorial candidate. Stewart, who is chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, was chairman of Putin's **** holster's Virginia campaign until he was fired for not participating in a cross burning.

There was no indication that Stewart, who has alienated some supporters with his focus on Confederate symbols, attended either rally. In defending the Confederate battle flag and monuments, Stewart has said that he is not promoting symbols of hate but rather "participating in activities that will get me Sean Spicer's job when he finally gets fired or, at the very least, get me a spot on Donnie's next reality TV show."

Stewart did not respond to a request for comment Sunday. He kept an unusually low-profile on Twitter. "Heil Trump!" he said in one of his few tweets of the day.

Nice optics waving around a bunch of torches at night in Virginia.

To complete they effect they should cut eyeholes in some white bedsheets and wear them.

Some of the morons on this site were probably there. I'm sure they'll insist there was nothing racist about it, while they yelled "go back to africa" at black people.

I just thought this was all settled when the South surrendered. They'd give up the Confederacy and Slavery and in exchange we wouldn't force them to do none of that there book learnin'.

The KKK was the terrorist arm of the Democrat party. Not all Democrats were Klu Klux, but every Klu Klux was a Democrat. The KKK had a habit of murdering Republicans.

"The KKK had a habit of murdering Republicans."

And we're all supposed to pretend to be as stupid as you and not acknowledge that during the Civil Rights era the two parties switched. The Democrats represented and passed civil rights and the Republicans developed the southern strategy to take advantage of white resentment of civil rights. But fools like you think it is significant to pretend that never happened and that both parties today represent the exact same positions that they did 100 years.

21 | Posted by danni That is not true. While there were a few defections from the Democrats to the Republicans, the vast majority of the old guard in the south stayed true to the party of Jeff Davis. The majority of the new southern Republicans were new to politics. People like, George Bush Sr. As far as liberal vs. conservative, some stanch segregationist were liberal about every thing except race. Like Fulbright or Long or Gore. There was no flip. White southerns just had had enough of the crap the democrats were. The corruption, voter fraud, the Klan, the stupidity that had shackled economic growth in the south for a century. Race was a factor, but it was not the sole factor. BTW, as I remember southern schools were desegregated mostly under Nixon, a Republican. The move to the Republican party actually accelerated during this time. I remember that in Boston, white mobs trew bricks at school buses about that time.

KKK Republicans control legislature in Indiana

True story of the massive influence of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) corrupting virtually every Republican in the Indiana state legislature, and the scandal that brought the party down.

Oops.

#27 | Posted by Hans Which Klan are you refereeing to, the one founded in Pulaski, Tennessee in 1865/66 or Stone Mountain Georgia in 1915? If you are referring to the later, the requirements were white, non-Catholic and gentile. Political affiliation was dependent upon where the Klan operated. BTW, the North always provided more members than the south during the 20s. Indiana could claim that 20% of the white males were members in 1925.

"Indiana could claim that 20% of the white males were members in 1925."

Nearly a century later, Indiana remains a conservative stronghold.
