Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The United States watched Russians hack France's computer networks during the election and tipped off French officials before it became public, a U.S. cyber official told the Senate on Tuesday. France's election campaign commission said Saturday that "a significant amount of data" -- and some fake information -- was leaked on social networks following a hacking attack on centrist Emmanuel Macron's successful presidential campaign. France's government cybersecurity agency is investigating what a government official described as a "very serious" breach. The leak came 36 hours before the nation voted Sunday in a crucial presidential runoff between Macron and far-right candidate Marine Le Pen. The election commission said the leaked data apparently came from Macron's "information systems and mail accounts from some of his campaign managers" -- an attack that mimicked Russian hacking of the Democratic National Committee in last year's U.S. presidential election.

"We had become aware of Russian activity. We had talked to our French counterparts and gave them a heads-ups -- 'Look, we're watching the Russians. We're seeing them penetrate some of your infrastructure. Here's what we've seen. What can we do to try to assist?'" Adm. Mike Rogers told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

He said the U.S. also is working closely with German and British counterparts.

How are the Trumpsters going to quantify that Donald's own NSA Director testifies that the Russian's hacked the French election in order to assist Le Pen just as they did the US election to help elect Trump?

Fake news? Better talk to Rogers about that, huh?

DNC wasn't hacked, quit using that term.

It was phished.

The difference is huge. In the phishing case the victim is proactive in the perps extraction of data, it's hard to admit but the DNC brought it on themselves.

Calling it a hack implies the DNC wasn't complicit, and had good security protocols just someone got in.

Writing this I find it amazing Obama knew Russians were trying to get information since 2015, and the DNC just wasnt prepared. It's beyond comprehension the incompetence of the Clinton campaign, and Obama's inability to communicate the seriousness.
Unless it wasn't...

Only now after losing bigly did it matter. Too bad. Get you stuff together....

"The difference is huge."

Not really.

Phishing is social engineering, and it's a common ploy by hackers.

You're being a nitwit, as usual.

Andrea's being obtuse as usual. I have to take continuing series of cyberawareness webcasts for my company. To insinuate that phishing isn't done for the sole purpose of gaining illegal access to someone's private data or information is ludicrous and ignorant. Phishing is merely using subterfuge to gain entry by having someone open the door for hackers compared to the hacker having to actually pick the lock. A distinction without a difference.

As has been proven, all it takes is for one person's mindless mistake to expose data and information to hostile entities regardless of the precautions and safeguards put in place.

Not shocking Comrade Andy comes running to Russia's defense.
Hey Mackris, hows your boy BillO' doing these days??

Maybe, maybe not.

The CIA and other US intelligence agencies are unreliable sources of information. The deep State has been in an uproar since Putin halted US occupation of Syria and Ukraine. They have successfully forced Trumph back into their hate Russia camp, which made no sense to Trumph, who relies on Russia for financing. They lie continuously, in a big way and make Trumph's lies sound trivial and petty.

According to Wikileaks US intelligence agencies pose as a Russian hacking site all the time. So none of us have any idea what's really going on.

The NSA programs mimic the Russian protocols. This weekend's ransom ware attack on the world's computer networks were done by an NSA-designed program.

If Russia didn't exist, our own government would have to find someone else to pin all this ---- on. Still, it was amusing to watch liberals' evolution on the Hillary email debacle.

"It can't be hacked, because there's no information there!"

"There's information there, but it was secured! It cannot be breached by anybody!"

"God, I can't wait for this election to be over! Once Hillary wins, we don't have to hear about those damn emails anymore!"

"The Russians stole the electiona by hacking our computer systems!"

Wow! Good thing for us we have an expert in our midst.

Yes. Every quarter you go on YouTube or something and sleepwalk through some menus about how important computer and network security is. And unimpressive as that is to someone actually in the industry, that's still miles beyond what Hillary's senior campaign staff ever did.

You right-wing hacks are pathetic. Mackris and Whitedevil say that because the DNC lacked adequate security controls Russia is not to blame. That's like saying a rape victim is at fault for wearing a short skirt and not being a martial arts expert.

Whatever you think of Trump and whether he'd have won without help from the Russians, the truth is pretty plain: the Russians are making every attempt to surreptitiously gain access to private data in order interfere with Western elections for their own purposes. That should concern every American.

BS, stop blaming the Russian, if I leave my house door open and get robbed, who's fault is it?
#11 | POSTED BY CRASSUS

Apt analogy but I'd still blame the burglar.

Except in this case, the door was locked and deadbolted. The Russians simply picked the lock. They hacked through security software at the DNC, State Dept and elsewhere.

Glad to see you are a traitor to your country though.

Did they, prove it, show the facts. The door wasn't locked, the key was given, and currently there is no factual evidence the Russian's did this, but I suspect even if the truth came out it would be ignored by people such as you.

The robber.

But the you're the kind of guy who says a girl who gets drunk at college party is to blame when she gets raped.

I just walked past a neighbor's truck. The windows were down.

According to you, if I reached in and took stuff it would be my neighbor's fault instead of mine.

Don't use the Retort to make excuses for Russian attacks on our election. Take that treasonous crap to RT, Sputnik, Breitbart or one of the other sites where right-wing Americans bend over for Vladimir.

Notice the perfect Venn diagram overlap of:
Trump supporters, and
People who blame the victim.

It's also funny that I'm routinely accused of blaming America first, and here the Trump crowd....blames the stupid Democrat Americans first.

I'm sure Drumpf will share with his Russian masters exactly how US Intelligence identified what they were doing in the French election so that they can change things up next time. BLOTUS is truly a traitor!

Can't imagine why you do Comrade. Unless you are getting paid for it.

I am also an IT specialist. Phishing is social engineering and is an essential tool in hacking. Not sure what kind of IT guy you are but if you did not know this then whoever you are working for is getting ripped off.

And if the DNC wasn't hacked then no information would have been compromised. Information was clearly compromised. And that info was used against the DNC. Therefore it was hacked.
