Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Israel would be the only country to escape the Trump administration's proposed deep cuts in foreign aid, the State Department said Thursday. The proposed budget from the White House includes slashing the State Department budget by up to a third, cuts that would mostly target climate change, democracy promotion and health programs, and numerous foreign aid projects. In all, $17.3 billion would be cut from the State Department budget, which is about $50 billion. Congress is highly unlikely to approve the White House proposal, however, so the impact is still unknown. Mark Toner, a State Department spokesman, said U.S. aid to Israel, which totaled about $3.1 billion this year, would not be touched under the Trump plan. Israel gets more U.S. aid than any other nation.

Numerous members of Congress, along with advocacy organizations, spoke out Thursday against the proposed cuts to the State Department.

"Slashing our international engagement by even a fraction of (the amount proposed), at a time when we're facing serious challenges around the world, would be an absolute disaster," said Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

We are fighting terrorism, want to resist such in any form your free load money is cut. Good for trump. Setting a standard for backing us or lose money. Nice!

And suddenly these other country's will respect the USA instead of mock it.

I don't know about your parents but mine taught me that you can't buy friends.

They are not friends, they are allies, and if they don't support our policy as a country's direction then they don't deserve our support.

And just so you understand, cutting our free flow of money and saying it is wrong means you are trying to buy friendship.

Remember the U.S.S. Liberty, some friends.

"And just so you understand, cutting our free flow of money and saying it is wrong means you are trying to buy friendship."

That makes exacly zero sense. If we can cut off funds for other nations then we can cut off funds for Israel, if they don't want to be our friends and allies then they can go find some other nation willing to be their friend and ally. Good luck with that. We don't need to buy Israels friendship and alliance, they have no alternative.

I think of Trump as Bibi's puppet. That pretty much sums up foreign policy.

It explains why Trumps plans to increase military spending while decreasing spending throughout the rest of the executive branch.

So, we will cut Medicaid for Americans while paying for Israel's socialist healthcare system? Really?

Just gave Ray a "newsworth," never thought that would happen but I agree with him 100% on that post.

Danni, go back and read your post, do you understand what I said and how your post exactly says you are buying friends.

#12 | Posted by Crassus at 2017-03-19 11:29 AM | Reply

No Crassus, what I am saying is that Israel should be paying us not the other way around.

Danni, on a certain level I agree with you, but I also recognize the strategic importance of Israel's location and the value it has for the US in the middle east.

Spoken like a true warmonger.

Hey crASSus. How you liking your wars in Afghanistan Iraq Syria Yemen and throughout the rest of the Middle East?

Israel's appeal to America is it creates a continuous need for American military might in the Middle East.

It's capitalism at its worst.

And crASSus loves it.

Should we feel so good knowing that those USA Meals on Wheels are going to those old poor Jews or (Pals?) in Israel that you see all the time on the www.ifcj.org commercials. Why aren't the Zuckerbergs & Bloombergs etc donating? Instead WalMart retirees are giving, while giving up Meals on Wheels.

An "ally" is supposed to mutually sacrifice, instead the USA does all the sacrificing.

For many, many Republicans, Israel is no less than America's 51st State.

Then they should get the same love as West Virginia.

#18 | Posted by bruceaz at 2017-03-19 05:41 PM | Reply

If that's all it took to keep Israel safe from outside forces, that is all they would get. But Israel, unlike West Virginia, needs a hell of a lot more military support to maintain the status quo. Unlike West Virginia, Israel cannot survive on the cheap.

Well too bad, everyone has been conquered, ask the Caananites or the Philistines.Never hear of returning the Cherokee to their stolen lands in Georgia. I'm not antisemitic and I don't care about anyone's beliefs but I think today's Israel is built on alot of European guilt.

Yes everyone should be able to live how they like and practice their religion and thoughts. Like here, not like saudi land or our other allies.

Netanyahu treated us like ----, not the other way around. He got his money from Obama. We can make our own boots. --

Sorry to go on rant ,but it was the British and French that split up the Ottoman Empire with false promises in WWI to both the Arabs and Jews. A big part of it was the German Jews were loyal Germans . They tried to lure them away. Holocaust was the next generation.

British and French that split up the Ottoman Empire with false promises
#21 | POSTED BY BRUCEAZ

The Otto Empire, as the Sick Man of Europe, died from slowly festering internal wounds/turmoil: yuge population increases, poor economic ability to handle the population boom, and a widespread refusal to modernize late 19th century, and turn of the 20th century. Imo.

Lawrence of Arabia sure had 'splaining to do.

#25 | Posted by bruceaz at 2017-03-19 07:52 PM | Reply

Lawrence of Arabia was a great man. He was used by the British Empire and then spit out. His dream and vision of one united Arab State was never going to come to pass so long as the Euro powers had such a vested interested in never allowing it.

#26 The PTB never wants consolidated powers, either through the hands of cultural unity, guns in average hands, or through government cohesion. You think they keep us divided through their PC, favoritism for minorities and outsiders, while putting down the majority for benevolent reasons? Why do you think they had the USA remove and destroy all strong hands in the ME except their own?

#27 | Posted by Robson at 2017-03-19 08:45 PM | Reply

That was kind of my point Moder8, it was still colonialism. The Israelis didn't bomb the King David Hotel for fun. India was still a colony. French Indonesia was a fact. Angola was still Portuguese. But I'm going to build condos on your land after I chop down your orchards because a thousand years ago, blah blah blah. By that right the Babylonians have a right.
Do the Kurds have a right to a homeland?
