Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, March 15, 2017

A Bay Area food-technology startup says it has successfully developed the world's first chicken strip grown from self-reproducing cells without so much as ruffling a feather. ... Scientists, startups and animal-welfare activists believe the new product could help to revolutionize the roughly $200 billion U.S. meat industry. Their goal: Replace billions of cattle, hogs and chickens with animal meat they say can be grown more efficiently and humanely in stainless steel bioreactor tanks. ... They call it "clean meat," a spin on "clean energy," and they argue the technique would help the food industry avoid the costs of grain, water and waste-disposal associated with livestock.

This is far more important than people realize. A huge portion of grown grain goes to feeding animals. If this became cost effective, it would revolutionize farming.

What a featherbrained idea. Where's the meat??? Give me the real thing hunny. Not something that looks quite funny.

There is no way the taste isn't off.

And what resources does the process use? Doesn't make sense to say "it doesn't use grain or water or produce animal waste" without letting us know what resources the process does consume and what biproducts it produces.

The only clear benefit here is that no animals are killed, assuming you worry about such things.

"Would you like regular, extra-crispy, or self-reproducing?"

#6 | Posted by cookfish at 2017-03-15 02:53 PM | Reply | Funny: 1

"grown from self-reproducing cells"

"Scientists from those companies have already produced beef, grown from bovine cells and made into a burger and a meatball. Until now, chicken hasn't been produced using the method."

Pretty obviously they use animal cells to grow meat in the lab.

Which is really just to accommodate established tastes which are not plant-based. Lots of vegetarians dislike soy and other means of making food that looks and tastes like meat instead of changing tastes to fruits, nuts, and vegetables.

And anyone whose seen how chickens and cows are treated in industrial facilities could have legit reservations about being a part of that.

i really don't see the problem with lab grown meat once they perfect the taste and the quality.

ensure no chemical additives...

its still genetically the same, just controlled and no life has to be taken to make it.

one day everyone will be eating this... there will be no choice.

AND it will cut 50% of the green house emmissions.

Seems to me this would be supported by the same folks who freak out about GM crops. Which is weird. I feel a little weary about eating test tube meat. I probably would go full veg if this replaced the real thing.

And what resources does the process use?

If they're anything like the cells I use in culture it'll require liquid medium (salt solution containing essential amino acids, glucose, buffers and bovine serum) and the sterile facilities to handle the cells and media.

Doesn't make sense to say "it doesn't use grain or water or produce animal waste" without letting us know what resources the process does consume and what biproducts it produces.

The only animal waste would be the bovine serum (byproduct of slaughter houses IIRC), so it's recycling a waste product produced by another industry.

No grain would be needed for the process itself as the cultured cells don't require it.

Since there's no animals, no animal waste products (ie giant ponds of feces) would be produced.

When the cells are done growing in the reactor, or whenever they harvest them, the major byproduct would be the used culture media which, I would imagine, be decontaminated with bleach and then dumped down the drain.

At least that's my speculation. It could be different but I don't see it being too far off.

I would say that it can't replace the real thing but since corporations own our government I guess it is possible by removing consumer choice.

I can't imagine hunting being outlawed in the US though. If the meat at the store was all replaced with Frankenmeat, I imagine hunters and the gun lobby would become alot more popular.

#28 | Posted by Sully at 2017-03-16 09:36 AM | Reply

So your response to frankenmeat would be to go 100% recombinant DNA veggies? You can't buy 100% natural produce in an American Grocery store. Even the seeds you buy to grow your own have modified DNA.

It's funny that many of the people who will object to lab-grown meat have happily been shoving lab-created foods down their gullets for decades.

And it's mostly republicans who work with food makers to block our ability to know what's in our food, modified DNA included.

#34 | Posted by MUSTANG at 2017-03-17 07:58 AM | Reply

Its ok republicans have made it impossible to know where the meat you are eating came from or what is in it besides meat.

It would be great if there was a REGULATION requiring them to label frankenfoods but as long as the GOP is incharge and slashing regulations...

Every regulation is a response to bad behavior. The bad behavior isnt thoretical it is real. Before EPA regulations you could walk across Lake Erie without getting your feet wet and rivers actually caught on fire in America. The reason you can't eat fish from many lakes and rivers is the LACK OF REGULATION of industry in the past.

You see deregulation only produces economic gain IF A COMPANY CAN MAKE EXTRA MONEY BY DOING THE THINGS THE REGULATIONS BANNED. This republican meme that companies wont do the bad behavior in the absence of the regulation is poppycock.

INCREASING ECONOMIC ACTIVITY BY DEREGULATION IS BY DEFINITION REWARDING BAD BEHAVIOR
