Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Holding red and white signs, they protested outside Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's election party on Tuesday, demanding the city take a tougher stand against deportation. The next day, they rallied in support of the International Women's Day strike, demanding social and economic equality for women. These weren't liberals. They were card-carrying members of the Democratic Socialists of America, one of the fastest growing groups on the American left. The surge of activism sweeping the U.S. since Donald Trump's election has energized the nation's largest socialist organization, which has tripled in size over the last year to claim more than 19,000 dues-paying members. That's a record for the DSA, which was founded in 1982.

"People really felt that they had to do something to combat the incoming Trump administration," said David Duhalde, the deputy director of the Democratic Socialists of America's national leadership, which helps coordinate chapters spread across 40 states. "We're not only somebody you can resist Trump with, we're somebody you can build a better world with."

The Democratic Socialists of America's membership spike seems driven by three factors: younger Americans, who polls say are more open to socialism than previous generations; the 2016 Democratic primary campaign of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a self-described democratic socialist whose race ignited a grassroots following but also left bitter feelings about the Democratic Party; and the galvanizing effect that Trump's election has had on left-leaning Americans, who have increasingly turned to grassroots activism.

Raise taxes on the ultra-rich. $15 an hour. Single payer. Break up the the too big to fail banks. Free college. Defeat the Reptoids.

It's everything Hillary wasn't.

I like it.

Go for it. The diversity of ideas and parties, much like the diversity of topography and people of the US, is what makes democracy great. That 2 parties have dominated everything for so long is the reason both sides applauded the government stripping us of our rights solely because the POTUS that did it had a favorable letter behind their name....

One some issues, even a conservative, I go off the deep end and swing extremely far left. Education being one of them. Im all for free higher education, even going so far as to require students after HS to do either 4 years of college or 4 years of military service. Thats the old Cuban model. One of the reasons they have more Doctors per capita than any country in the Western Hemisphere. Nationalized industry, when correctly run, can be a Godsend for countries. Venezuela exports 2 million barrels of oil per day. Thats enormous for country a that has a lower population than Texas. But they mismanaged the profits and let corruption siphon away all that money and more.

Its funny how the pendulum swings. My dad and his entire generation were Guevaristas, my grandpa and all his generation were extremely right wing. And my generation have swung back to the right with maintaining some aspects of the leftward swing....

Im no socialist but a Socialist Party would be great to push ideas into Congress and the public eye..

Y'all do realize that even tripled they couldn't get a mayor elected. 30 thousand? There are NASCAR races that have a bigger draw.

This group is a perfect example of why protests have lost all meaning. I think anti-President people have let the saying "The squeaky wheel gets the grease" impact their lives way too much. Now that all of them are squeaky wheels, everyone has gotten used to the squeak and ignore it.

If it is an option, I'll register as a DSA. No more Hillarys.

If your lawn was always brown and dead and your neighbor's was green and healthy, wouldn't you ask your neighbor how he keeps his lawn so green? Or would you keep on doing the same thing hoping some miracle fixes it?

Other countries have figured out how to do certain things better than america. Health care in particular. The fact that we refuse to copy more successful models just shows how stupid america truly is, and how effective our campaign finance system is at serving the elites and no one else..

Just cheat off the test of the smart kid next to you.

What most conservatives fail on is long term views.

Immediate profits Trump conservation and long term sustainability
Short term tax breaks Trump long term investments in education, research, and infrastructure
Anti abortion but no thought to caring for the children that result
short term profits trump maintenance, safety, and training
miltary force trumps diplomacy

It doesn't take much effort to figure out that spending more on the military will not gain us much if anything

The $57 Billion/year price tag could be spent better. 4 Million babies were born in America in 2016. For that cost we could put $15,000 in an S&P fund for each and every baby born in America. If it increases at the 30 year rate for the S&P the accounts would contain over $7 million vested at age 65. The costs of administration would be covered by the reclaimed funds from people who pass before age 65. So we can buy a few new toys for the military today or we can guarantee retirement of all newborn Americans going forward.

How about we secure our nation's future instead of spending more money bombing last year's craters in the desert?

On topic, I feel distanced from the Democratic Party. The DNC games to insure HRC got the nomination were sickening. The dishonesty WITHIN the Party of people like DWS and Brazille was something out of the GOP playbook. For god's sake, stop trying to shove a corporatist supporter of MIC down our throats. We want a liberal. And if you won't give us one we won't vote for you. I'd rather endure 4 years of Trump inefficacy than 8 years of HRC corporate kowtowing while pretending the whole time to actually be the liberal.

I don't think it's stupidity so much, as it is "the powers that be" that control the country. I liken our present situation as really a Capitalistic inversion of George Orwell's "1984"

Many People think that only governments can be despotic, but thats not true. Any power system unchecked is despotic. We're coming into an age of what I call Corporate Totalitarianism. I see it in my own job as a trucker. Cameras in the truck , electronic logbooks, random urine tests(they know my exact location at all times. I tell my boss the reason is so they can scramble those F-16's to take me out if the need be...lol). From a satellite They can take video of me walking around my truck at any location. And what is my supervisor's apologetic defense is for it all:..."It's for your own safety."

I'll admit this tyranny is softer and much more subtle. If you feel a little creeped out, and disturbed after you've watched a pharmaceutical commercial, then you're feeling it.

Big business is taking over control of what used to be done by local governments, Prisons, garbage collection, school buses, etc. I told a Marine friend of mine once," wait till they replace the USMC with a " Blackwater" type outfit, (because it'll be cheaper and more efficient). He just laughed in my face.

Well it's stupidity that makes people vote for puppets of the powers that be.

The success of bernie and trump show that many people are waking up and want to change the system, but the election of trump shows they are still really gullible, and can fall for FAKE populism if its offered to them.

Just like the commie propagandists, they make life sound good for the average peasant and proletariat, in fact too good to be true. Share everything. Sing Kumbaya for all. Their mission just like the commies has been grabbing power for their private cabal, not equity for the people. Next time you are in Ukraine ask them how that Holodomor turned out for them at the behest of the Bolshevik commies.

Karl Marx's Commie Manifesto: Excerpt. Following the proletariats' defeat of capitalism, a new classless society would emerge based on the idea: 'from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs'. In such a society, land, industry, labour and wealth would be shared between all people. All people would have the right to an education, and class structures would disappear. Harmony would reign, and the state would simply 'wither away'.

We always said democrats were socialist now they freely admit it.

Just like the old USSR they want it there way any other way and they will kill you they want the gov to own all property.
Black lives matter wants to do away with all state law enforcement and make everything federal.
This is an attempted overthrow of the united states system and is treason.

No matter how many times its explained to you, you still act like there's no difference between canadian socialism and communist russian socialism.

This means you're either really stupid, or really good at acting like you are.

"We always said democrats were socialist now they freely admit it."

Yeah, I agree with this to some extent.

FDR was really our 1st Socialistic Democrat who led "The Greatest Generation" to Victory against the biggest threat to western democracies ever, I think(I.e.,Naziism, the Imperialistic Japanese).

And his General, Dwight Eisenhower who was a Republican, and who later in life tried to warn us ,(like the wise father he really was), against the threat he foresaw of the Military Industrial Complex.

Unfortunately, his warning was to no avail.

Even if all they accomplish is to worry the .1% enough to cub some of their excesses, they will have accomplished something. Numbers aren't there yet. We haven't had that since communism fell apart.

The right wing has convinced themselves that socialism is bad in any form. They will go to the grave making sure people are uneducated, unfed, homeless and sick rather than allowing our country to embrace those pieces of socialism that have always worked everywhere they have been enacted.

What they fail to understand is that like it or not some socialist programs MUST be enacted or out nation will fall behind the rest of the world. Other countries pay less for better results with socialized medicine. Other countries are seeing the payback from educating their people. Other countries have reduced poverty rates by huge amounts, all because they embraced those parts of socialism that are proven winners.

Americans work harder, work longer hours and retire later than anyone else in the modern world. We have fallen to 18th in per capita GDP, 37th in lifespan, 37th in medical outcomes, and 31st in infant moirtality rate, all because our conservatives don't think anyone who isn't a CEO doesn't deserve so much as a moment of leisure.
