Stuart Anderson: What would we lose if immigrants could no longer come to America? Surprisingly, one of the most important things America would lose is the contributions made by their children. A new study from the National Foundation for American Policy found a remarkable 83% (33 of 40) of the finalists of the 2016 Intel Science Talent Search were the children of immigrants. ... In fact, 75% -- 30 out of 40 -- of the finalists had parents who worked in America on H-1B visas and later became green card holders and U.S. citizens. That compares to seven children who had both parents born in the United States. To put that in perspective, even though former H-1B visa holders represent less than 1% of the U.S. population, they were four times more likely to have a child as a finalist in the 2016 Intel Science Talent Search than were parents who were both born in the United States.

That can't possibly be true because GOP Rep. Steve King just yesterday tweeted "We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies."

You act as if immigration is somehow inherently bad.

Not the case. If people come here legally, they are welcome.

I'm afraid your romantic notion of a welcoming America is not reflected in Trump's America. Time to update your understanding of where you live.

Oh and it's not just kids. All 6 America's 2016 Nobel prize winners were immigrants.

Immigration ending? have we closed off America to the world?

Is this being discussed somewhere?

Do you really hate hillary so much that you have now taken the side of putin, racism, drug warriors, plutocrats, homophobia, pollution, and cruelty?

Trust me i was as big of a bernie fan as anyone, but it didn't make me take the side of any sociopath who opposed hillary.

You know republicans don't just hate illegal immigrants. Their base literally is concerned about keeping the ethnic makeup of america looking like the 1950s. That's the side you're now taking.

The side I'm taking is that of an observer calling out the height of the cliff you insist upon jumping from.

you have now taken the side of putin, racism, drug warriors, plutocrats, homophobia, pollution, and cruelty?

See what I mean? You went from "Competing in science and technology are a lower priority for republicans than keeping america white" and immediately escalated it to "Their base literally is concerned about keeping the ethnic makeup of america looking like the 1950s.", while building the strawmen of issues I support.

How high can you go? Will the republicans line us up and kill us in the streets? Does it go that high?

I have a pretty good view from this tree. And i can see what it is that the repub base really wants- A white america. So when you jump in and deflect from trump to hillary on every thread, making false equivalencies and weak trump defenses, that's the agenda you're supporting. Racism, pollution, plutocracy, and cruelty. If you're NOT a trump supporter you're doing a really great impression of one.

75% of the parents came to the US on H-1B visas. Those are issued not because employers want a lower cost employee, but because they can't find a suitable candidate that's a US citizen. I have a BSBA and an MBA, making my total education level well about that of your average American. But that means ------- to an employer looking for a qualified candidate in a STEM field. Having an MBA, or a poli-sci degree, or some other useless diploma is not going change that. And those high paying STEM jobs will always be outside the reach of those low skilled workers hoping to earn a high wage.

Immigration-this kind of immigration, is really the best hope for this country. Natural born citizens are becoming increasingly entitled and feeling that they are deserving of a quality standard of living, while at the same time feeling they have no responsibility themselves in achieving that. Maybe those immigrants from China and India, going into high value careers, will be willing to incur higher taxes so that Berniebros and the like can spend their days making craft beer, engaging in urban farming, or just darting around town on their hover boards; while still providing them with the income they deserve.

Exactly! Steve King said as much with his comment: "You cannot rebuild your civilization with somebody else's babies. You've got to keep your birth rate up..."

Steve King is the first politician to state what I have felt for some time: the fight over abortion for non evangelical republicans is about increasing the number of white babies being born. The religious right was enlisted into the fight by cloaking the real objective in a religious message i.e. "thou shall not kill".

You are ignorant of history. There is a flagrant pattern of companies that advertise in a small local rag somewhere so they can obey the letter of the law and say they tried to hire Americans first. A small handful of companies use a huge portion of the H1-B visas. Any High tech worker can tell you Americans are passed up every day for H1-B workers and the purpose is EXPLICITLY to lower the wages in those industries.

Indian companies cycle workers through America on H1-B visas then they return to India and TAKE THE JOB WITH THEM. It is a training program for outsourcing companies

SCE in LA replaced almost its entire American workforce with workers from Infosys

Average Wage for H1-B workers at infosys in LA: $70,882

Annual Wages for Computer Systems Analyst in Los Angeles CA (where SCE is Headquartered) $91,990

SCE recently commissioned a consulting firm, Aon-Hewitt, to conduct a compensation study, which showed that SCE's IT specialists were earning an average annual base pay of $110,446. That means Tata and Infosys are getting a 36 to 41 percent savings on labor costs -- or saving about $40,000 to $45,000 per worker per year.

Corky, black women make up a lot of the abortions compared to size of the race in society.

Among black women, the current abortion ratio is 420.2 That means there are 420 abortions for every 1,000 live births. Statistically, 30% of black pregnancies end in abortion (excluding miscarriages). Among white women, the abortion ratio is 121 -- which means less than 11% of white pregnancies end in abortion.3 The abortion ratio among Hispanic women is 178, or 15% of pregnancies.4 Even though whites make up 63.7% of America's population, white women account for only 37% of its abortions.

[Martin Luther King, Jr.] once said, "The Negro cannot win as long as he is willing to sacrifice the lives of his children for comfort and safety." How can the "Dream" survive if we murder the children? Every aborted baby is like a slave in the womb of his or her mother. The mother decides his or her fate.

I don't know what Steve King believes but I seriously doubt the real motivation for the opposition to abortion is based on increasing the number of white babies born. That may be what a fringe believes but I've never heard that in any circle......and I can assure you that if your assertion were true, I would have heard that.

There is no shortage of high tech workers. Any tech School CCNA graduate is more qualified than 90% of the H1-Bs that are taking the jobs they should get. Companies advertise a job with a list of certs required that would take 40 years to aquire and when nobody with all those certs shows up they hire an H1-B with the same or less training than all the Americans they passed up. The H1-Bs get paid less and the corporations that use them laugh at you all the way to the bank
