Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, November 29, 2016

In the days following Donald Trump's presidential victory, students in Kansas chanted, "Trump won, you're going back to Mexico," to students from other countries, according to a high school teacher in a suburban community within the state. In Tennessee, a black student was blocked from entering his classroom by two white students chanting, "Trump, Trump," according to a high school teacher at the school where this happened. And, in Georgia, a 12-year-old white male student saw an "X" on another white student's paper and proceeded to draw a swastika on his paper, according to a middle school teacher at the school. "And our administration is telling us not to talk about it," the teacher said. Those are just a few of the examples given by more than 10,000 educators, 90% of whom are teachers, who responded to an online survey sponsored by Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

"We are still daily experiencing the affects of the outcome," said Lindsey Polkl, a fifth-grade teacher in Minneapolis. "My students have begun playing a game called 'Trump's Coming,' in which one non-Hispanic student yells 'Trump's Coming' and all of the Hispanic students need to hide." ...

In all, there were more than 2,500 reports of "negative incidents" of bigotry and harassment that can be directly tied to the rhetoric of the presidential campaign, according to the report, entitled After Election Day: The Trump Effect.

The climate of hate that Trump sparked with his campaign could be his lasting legacy. He emboldened racists in a way I've never seen from a presidential candidate in my lifetime. To see it playing out among schoolchildren is simply tragic. We'll be fortunate if the country survives him.

You're being just a wee-bit melodramatic, Rogers.

You have your head in the sand. Name another presidential election that was followed immediately by incidents like these all over the country.

Trump's an absolute lunatic who is out of control and spreading complete falsehoods he got from InfoWars.

What do you think he'll be like when he's president and something major happens or his popularity takes a nosedive?

He will demonize a group of people in this country as "the enemy" and sow hatred against them. He'll make up crap as blatantly as he invented three million imaginary undocumented immigrants voting for Hillary. His followers will believe him.

The guy's an authoritarian starter kit. That's where all his impulses lie.

"We'll be fortunate if the country survives him."

It will, I'm sure. But the cost of repairing the post-Trump boondoggle is going to be staggering, both financially and in loss of credibility and trust around the world. Much like what we went through in the post-George Bush administration.

Also, since the Constitution seems to be the biggest obstacle to achieving his ultimate goals, who would be surprised if, in some surge of power, he tried to declare the Constitutional itself unconstitutional.

Not I ~ He's nuttier than a fruitcake.

ou have your head in the sand. Name another presidential election that was followed immediately by incidents like these all over the country.

Well, we've seen an awful lot of anti-Trump violence since the election. It only got reported because of how widespread it was. The only thing unusual is your ingrained belief that this is ALL one-sided. It isn't.

Trump's an absolute lunatic who is out of control and spreading complete falsehoods he got from InfoWars.

Trump sucks. No argument from me on that. He's hardly the first president to spread complete falsehoods.

What do you think he'll be like when he's president and something major happens or his popularity takes a nosedive?

I have no idea. Nor do you. All either of us can do is speculate.

He will demonize a group of people in this country as "the enemy" and sow hatred against them

Probably. Obama did just that, so he certainly has precedent.

The guy's an authoritarian starter kit. That's where all his impulses lie.

I don't dispute that. This means it's high-time you embrace federalism, the separation of powers. checks and balances, limited enumerated constitutional powers - ALL of the things you've despised over the last 8 years.

All of a sudden 'a phone and a pen' doesn't sound quite so alluring, does it?

Intransigence? Obstructionism? Filibuster? Those things were ALL racism just a few months ago. Now, they will be cherished "features" of our government.

For the record, it won't bother me one iota if the Democrats use what power they have to go into full 100% obstruction-mode.

I plan on being realistic.

Do you like Trump? Do you think he's awesome?

I qualify my personal take to illustrate the absurdity of much of the anti-Trump hysteria - "Yeah, he sucks. But he's not Hitler or anything close to that degree of evil."

I don't like Trump. I didn't vote for him. Nor did you. I don't think he's evil personified but that doesn't mean I approve of him in a general sense.

n August 2015, the derogatory term "Social Justice Warrior" was one of several new words and phrases added to Oxford Dictionaries. In discussing the term's origin, Martin outlined the similarity with the pejorative use of "political correctness" to denigrate something, stating that "the perceived orthodoxy [of progressive politics] has prompted a backlash among people who feel their speech is being policed."

en.wikipedia.org

Sometimes anti-SJW police other people's speech as much as any SJW does. They are often opposite sides of the same coin in much the same way the fervent atheist and fervent RW Christian are. My 2 cents.

Always best to not take anything too seriously here, and just laugh at those who do.

Given that racist organizations openly celebrated his victory, Trump has definitely emboldened racists. And I'm sure kids pick up on that. I'm also sure that they pick up on the "literally Hitler!" hysterics and that plays into this as well. Kids think its funny to do things that provoke adults. If they know certain teachers are going to give a big dramatic reaciton to something, they will do it in front of that teacher.

I work for a university, and the president told me she knows of at least two reported incidents of people referencing Trump's election and harassing students on our campus post-election. One student was African-American and the other a member of the LGBT community. The black student was told she would need to "go to the back of the bus" from now on.

All of these "reports" are impossible to analyze without details. This one could have been a racist incident. Or it could have been a joke between friends that was reported by some uninvolved third party. The latter would make more sense on a college campus but who knows.

Me either, but you forgot the otherside of that. Dems will complain he's a fascist, even though he's using the same mechanisms Obama pushed to their limits.

Such as Executive Orders/Memos.

On top of they they proclaim Castro as a hero, I am unclear how they hold this cognitive dissonance...

Its interesting to me is the media demonizing someone without any factual evidence, they claim kids are afraid, well it isn't Trump that has scared them, its their parents and their friends parents. Its divisive and there really is no need for it.

No, not really.....

if anti-SJW stopped policing SJW's egregious behavior, it would embolden them more so.

If SJW stopped behaving so poorly, anti-SJW would disappear. Anti-SJW is a reaction, not an action.

So no, not the opposite side of a coin.

I called ya all opposite sides of the same coin, Elizabeth Nolan Brown took it a step further in her article: "Trump Fans and 'Social Justice Warriors,' Two Sides of the Same Authoritarian Coin Both the social-justice left and the alt-right view the world primarily through identity politics."

Comparing SJW and anti-SJW, she writes:

"Then there's the reliance on victimhood and outrage. Conservatives have for years decried this melodramatic tendency on the left but, if there was ever a time they didn't trade on it heavily themselves, that time has long since passed. Both sides, especially their youngest and most digitally active advocates, seize every opportunity possible to portray the other side as bullying, stupid, and evil, and their side as the truly oppressed. "

Sounds about right to me.

#49 It was news to me that many conservatives see Trump as being the ultimate SJW, leading an army of SJW until I took some time today reading the following articles:

Some conservative outlets have described Donald Trump's actions and policies as social justice of the right. Stephen L. Miller, in an article for the National Review, wrote that Donald Trump is in fact the most politically correct candidate running for the presidency in 2016 and that his followers are "neo-nationalist culture warriors."

Daniel Payne writing for The Federalist website listed three general attributes of a social justice warrior and noted that they are attributes of Donald Trump, who has proven to be "the platonic social justice warrior candidate."

In an article for Reason magazine, Elizabeth Nolan Brown compared social justice on the left and right and found many similarities such as victimhood, outrage and portraying the other side as bullying and evil and their side as the truly oppressed.

Rod Dreher quipped in The American Conservative about Trump being the first social justice warrior presidential candidate: "Trump is also a man who constantly paints himself as a victim...So I wonder: Is Trump the first Social Justice Warrior presidential candidate, in the sense of weaponizing grievance in a way similar to that done by left-wing campus protesters?"

Jay Caruso wrote an article for Redstate focusing on "Trump's social justice army" and how Trump "takes to Twitter to air his grievances, knowing millions of his adoring fans will RT him and cheer him on".

Here's what I was sensing last night when I made the above remark. I say sensing because I had never heard the term "virtual-signalling" before and had to look it up:

What started off as a clever way to win arguments has become a liability. It's too often used to cast aspersions on opponents as an alternative to rebutting their arguments. In fact, it's becoming indistinguishable from the thing it was designed to call out: smug posturing from a position of self-appointed authority.

I'm not saying we should eradicate "virtue-signalling". But maybe it's time to get vaccinated.

www.theguardian.com

We all virtue-signal somebody sometime, but hopefully not all the time. :-)
