Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, November 26, 2016

Actor Ron Glass, known for his work on the 1970s comedy Barney Miller and the 2000s science fiction drama Firefly, has died. He was 71. Glass' representative did not provide details as to when or how he passed away. An Indiana native and University of Evansville graduate, Glass earned a supporting-actor Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Detective Ron Harris, an ambitious intellectual who yearned to be an author. He is the second member of the Barney Miller cast to die in 2016; Abe Vigoda, who played Phil Fish, passed away in January. On Firefly and its sequel movie Serenity Glass played Derrial Book, a shepherd and spiritual adviser.

I used to be a friend and one-time roommate of his nephew. I had the pleasure of meeting Ron once in the mid-eighties right after Barney Miller was either over or winding down. He was exactly as the character he played, suave and debonair with the type of panache only certain ones get to have.

My friend left before his uncle, may they both enjoy whatever's next.

That's a pretty awesome story -- thanks.

The show 'Barney Miller' was right in my wheelhouse growing up wise, and the show made a lasting impression in terms of what was funny and what was insightful.

I was a huge fan of both shows Ron Glass is best known for. After enjoying his cool, droll detective on Barney Miller as a kid, I was pleasantly surprised to see him turn up in Firefly.

Serenity is one of the all-time great science fiction films, in my estimation.

Here's a nice clip that has Barney trying to deal with being passed over for promotion for the 3rd time and Harris, Wojo, Dietrich doing their best to raise his spirits ... good stuff.

Veteran television and film actor Ron Glass died Saturday at age 71, his agent said Saturday. Glass died of respiratory failure, Jeffrey Leavitt told NBC News. "Ron was a private, gentle and caring man," Leavitt said. "He was an absolute delight to watch on screen. Words cannot adequately express my sorrow."

He was great in Firefly, my all-time favorite show.

One of my favorite movie scenes is when they come out of warp drive in front of the smug empire ships, who then proceed to soil themselves when an entire fleet of reavers show up a second later. The "oh ----" moment was done perfectly.

Detective Harris was always well dressed and had a smart, dry wit. Nowadays, we would accuse him of being gay.
