President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that he will nominate South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to be his ambassador to the United Nations. Haley, 44, a rising star in the Republican Party and a daughter of Indian immigrants, has led South Carolina since 2011. She is Trump's first female appointee to a Cabinet-level post. "Our country faces enormous challenges here at home and internationally," Haley said. "I am honored that the president-elect has asked me to join his team."

During the Republican presidential primary, Haley was sharply critical of Trump's policies, especially his proposal for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States, which she called "un-American." Haley's parents are members of the Sikh faith, but she's a Christian and attends a Methodist church.

A solid choice. I had previously read that she was being interviewed for Sec of State, but couldn't find a credible source for that rumor (other than newspapers from India, oddly). Glad to see Haley will have a spot in the new Presidential administration.

Well.. Better than John Bolton anyway.

Her accounting degree will serve her well at the UN...

Excellent choice. I am so relieved it isn't Bolton. Now more than ever we need somebody who will strengthen relations with our allies.

Bolton wasn't considered for U.N. ambassador. He's had that job and made a huge mess of it. He's talked about for Secretary of State, where he'd be a complete disaster.

Since Moder8 is here, I expect to be told that we can't predict bad things of Trump's presidency or we are guilty of being alarmist. We're supposed to wait and see like good little Germans.

Yes, because Zalmay Khalilzad played such an important role in Bush's foreign policy.

This is a cheap way for Trump to avoid the accusation that he hasn't appointed any women or people of color (Haley is of Indian descent) -- appoint one to a position with very little influence.

Haley is of Indian descent

This should infuriate our resident Pakistani.

Oh - and he keeps a strong Republican critic busy with something else.

Wait until orange Adolf and the Trump ----- find out she's not "a white".

Does the US ambassador to the United Nations actually do anything beyond keeping the seat warm when the Sec of State or the President don't show up?

#13 | Posted by REDIAL at 2016-11-23 10:36 PM | Reply

More than that. Consider Trump's view of the importance of the United States' relationship with the U.N.. Haley was a vocal critic of many of Trump's statements, and would possibly be such in the future as a governor. She is silenced with this appointment. Who would replace Haley? Lt Governor Henry McMaster, early supporter of Donald J. Trump. Two birds, one stone. Governor in your pocket, critic assigned as an ambassador to a union you can care less about.

Explain to me how it's a responsible choice. I'm curious to your interpretation for this decision.

Yes, exactly. And she'll do it to get foreign policy cred (which she does not have now).

Does it make you super duper mad he has made 3 top picks that don't fit your narrative? A woman of Indian descent for the UN, a woman for education secretary, and a black man for HHS ( who has not yet accepted though)

More proof that he is trying to cover-up his discriminatory ways! How dare he!

It doesn't make me super duper mad at all, but you being an alt-right trumptard, it probably really pisses YOU off.
