Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, November 22, 2016

Henry Farrell, Washington Post: The concept of "preference falsification" provides a plausible explanation for why many racists, anti-Semites and the like were reluctant to reveal their true beliefs until recently. It also explains why they are more willing to do so now that [Donald] Trump has been elected. People who are and always have been racists have just witnessed the election of a president who has made grossly racist claims about Mexicans and has surrounded himself with some people who are more racist still. This does two things. First, it gives racists new heart by suggesting that many more people share their beliefs than they might hitherto have believed. Second, it tells them that if they themselves publicly express their racism, they are less likely to be socially punished than they previously believed.

We don't know for certain that preference falsification is the real reason people seem to be more willing to show their racism in public than before. However, if it is, we can probably expect that there will be a long-term increase in the rate and level of public expressions of racism. Trump's appointment of Steven K. Bannon as his head of strategy, and his nomination of Sessions as attorney general are likely to further suggest to racists that they do not need to hide their true views.

The direct policy consequences of Trump's presidency will be very important. His election will have indirect consequences too. One of these indirect consequences is plausibly to weaken implicit social sanctions against racism and empower racists to publicly express their true preferences.

Most American Presidents resist any hint of profiteering from their office (until after they leave office). Trump doesn't plan to wait, to him it's going to be the profiteering Presidency. He will leave the Presidency so much richer than he is now, he already is the richest person to be President, he will leave the Presidency with wealth similar to Putin. In case you haven't been paying attention, the Oligarchs of Russia are the role models for today's billionaires. The tactics Trump uses to build his popular support is a page right out of the Putin instruction manual on how to become one of the richest, most powerful people in the world. In case you hadn't realized it yet, America elected a Putin clone, not quite as smart, not quite as tough, but still America's version of Putin.

It just came to me - it was about a woman and a couple of big crossroads he reached in her life and the play went through both paths throughout the entire production (one path she chose family/marriage - the other she chose career).

It still don't remember the name of it, but one of the songs was absolutely hilarious. It was called: "What the ---".

Heck,

David French at NRO echoes some of the sentiment being expressed here:

Days after an alt-right convention celebrated Trump's election with chants of "Heil victory," Trump has unequivocally condemned the movement, declaring in an interview with the New York Times, "I don't want to energize the group, and I disavow the group." This is welcome news, but frankly it's a bit late. For more than a year alt-right activists engineered a campaign of rage and hate against Trump critics (including me), targeting our families and even children with threats and vile images that went far, far beyond "normal" Twitter harassment and veered into dark and disturbing territory.

anyone who said anything about Obama's policies was called a raciest. Obama and his black lives matter people started all this protesting over FALSE charges of racism. You basically begged this to happen.

The media and Obama have basically raised a generation to hate blacks.

But the media is biased and lives outside of Americas heartland in NY so they dont see what they did. Or they dont care and did it on purpose.

So, the Republicans played their constituents using their ignorance and racist tendencies to turn them against health care reform which benefits themselves. They even voted for Republicans in their state legislatures and for their Governors even though they would deprive them of Medicare expansion which would have provided healthcare for millions of them. The stupidity of the Republican base voter is just incredible. You simply can't help them because they are too easily convinced that the hand that feeds them should be bitten.

The only thing Obama added to the federal debt was his 2009 Stimulus, which was about $800 billion. The rest of what has been added since Obama took office is the interest that must be paid on the bills that were already racked up before January 2009.

Home ownership down? I didn't know the extent of this until now...

Probably has to do with the fall out from the housing bubble that burst in September 2008.

And more people on food stamps has everything to do with the continued redistribution of wealth toward the top 1%.

" The charge for cow farts now why? "

Do they charge by the fart? Who keeps track of that anyway. And hey, are you pretending your health insurance bills weren't rising before Obama? Realize that when he first introduced ACA, he did so as part of an economic recovery. We had to do something to reduce healthcare inflation, Obamacare has done that. It hasn't eliminated it but it has slowed the rise in costs. YOu want to fix it permanently, we can. Listen to Bernie Sanders, Medicare for all. Medicare has the ability to actually limit payments for services and it does do that for the people who are on Medicare. Why really, do we want insurance company executives to skim billions off the top of our healthcare expenditures? Just eliminating them from the system would save billions every year. I'd truly like to read a defense of the "for-profit" healthcare system in the United States which included a comparison to systems in other modern industrialized nations. I'm pretty sure that anyone trying to make such a comparison would realize their error about halfway through. Our system is terrible, it's corrupt, it lets people die because they don't have enough money to pay for services. Just consider the plite of working poor in red states where Medicaid Expansion has been denied by Republicans, those folks are left with no coverage at all, they can't get preventive care, they can't get any exams they need, they are left defenseless agains a myriad of diseases just so Republican governors and legislators can exercise their ideological hatred of anything that helps the poor.

Danni, they charge by the Cow btw and yes some poor government employee is actually out there monitoring the farts so if your wondering why the price of beef is so high there is the answer, they pass the cost off to the consumer. Now I use that as an example because it does nothing to fix the problem just like aca. Talk to your doctor ask them how many more employees they had to hire to just do paper work for this governmental Bs. Mine hired 4 people. So the price is going up to cover them, not to cover the sick that your worried about. Fix the problem not symptoms. It starts with what we are charged for healthcare, then goes to insurance. How about we start with the Doctors and negotiate an actual price for service, then make the insurance companies compete across state lines so they can add more healthy people to the policy, to cover the price of the sick. Or people with your ideology can just pay the government to cover them and let the ones like me not pay extra that works too.

"Talk to your doctor ask them how many more employees they had to hire to just do paper work for this governmental Bs."

Well, your doctor is lying to you, for political purposes. The additional paperwork is minimal.

"then make the insurance companies compete across state lines"

They can already do that, with the approval of the new state's insurance board. The reasons it's unsuccessful are twofold:

1) Insurers need a large pool of insured immediately to meet actuarial needs. Too small a pool, and risk rises.
2) Insurers want to create a Delaware-style insurance situation, where the state with the lowest requirements becomes the norm, and folks have to travel out-of-state to sue. This is so egregiously unfair to consumers, it's been avoided.

Feel free to explain why 32% of Republicans approved of The Affordable Care Act, while less than half that number approved of Obamacare.

Reminds me of an interview of a Kentucky woman that was praising Kynect (the Obamacare implementation in Kentucky) and bad mouthing Obamacare. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!
