Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, October 20, 2016

German Lopez, Vox: There will be no more presidential debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. (Hopefully.) The final debate looked, at first, like it could have been pretty normal. At the start, there were some Trumpy moments -- but for the most part, it appeared like both candidates, thanks to Trump's slightly better behavior, were going to mostly stick to the issues. Then Trump happened. By the end of the debate, Trump had insulted Latino immigrants in Spanish, continued to say that he would not concede the election if he lost, and called Clinton "such a nasty woman." In many ways, it was a fitting end to what's been a very odd election season.

Vital issues sure to be ignored in tonight's debate.
How will jobs be created within the USA?
Economic growth is an anemic 1.2%. How can this be increased?
Is global warming a consequence of modern human civilization? Is it destroying the environment? If so how can mankind address the problem?
Should speculative, unproductive financial transactions be taxed?
How can the cost of health care be contained?

Instead Hillary and Donald will engage in fear mongering and name calling.

Yeah, I wish Obama had said something, anything about some sort of a stimulus package for repairing crumbling infrastructure. And for the record, I'm also upset about the amount of time I spent in traffic jams around those non-existent road projects he didn't fund.

Last time out she acknowledged that politics is a lot like making sausage, but she said we "usually end up about where we should." A 'Wall' of Taco, Food Trucks Line Up Against Trump in Las Vegas

A "wall" of taco and food trucks lined up in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas in a clear message to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump ahead of the third and final debate.

"We are here to support out families and friends fighting for immigration reform, and we are here supporting the cause," said Latin-fusion truck owner Ernesto Saavedra, 40. "We have to keep going, and we can't give up on dreams in the U.S."

Yvanna Cancela, the political director of the Culinary Workers Union local 226, said Trump had "tried to divide this country by talking about a wall -- we will not be fear-mongered into being divided, and he will not be president."

One of our greatest politicians ever, Lincoln, would have never gotten the 13th Amendment passed if he didn't do a little creative lying.

"The more likely peace seemed, the less likely it was that those on the fence would support the amendment. If peace seemed impossible, they were more likely to try support ending slavery as a wartime tactic, even if they were otherwise less firmly convinced that the end of slavery should be a priority."

Trump in 2008: Hillary Clinton will 'go down at a minimum as a great senator'

Asked about Hillary Clinton's legacy, Trump said, "Well, I think her history is far from being over. I'd like to answer that question in another 15 years from now. I think she is going to go down at a minimum as a great senator. I think she is a great wife to a president. And I think Bill Clinton was a great president."

"You know you look at the country then," he continued. "The economy was doing great. Look at what happened during the Clinton years. I mean, we had no war, the economy was doing great, everybody was happy. A lot of people hated him because they were jealous as hell. You know people get jealous and they hate you."

While Trump and Clinton will go head-to-head in the final debate Wednesday night, he had nothing but nice things to say about her and Bill Clinton eight years ago.

"Bill Clinton was a great president. Hillary Clinton is a great woman and a good woman," he said in the interview."

A tax is levied on health insurance plans that the administration deems to be too extravagent.

A tax is levied on medical devices that the administration deems to be superfluous.

A tax is levied on those who decide NOT to purchase a health insurance plan the administration approves of (individual mandate - take it up with the Roberts SCOTUS ruling if you disagree).

Now, for the second time, those are ALL taxes in every sense of the word.

Actually, it was quite a bit lower. It peaked around 10% several months after Stimulus was passed.

Also, it's a misleading statistic - check out the labor participation rate - it's abysmally high, although some of that is attributable to Boomers retiring.

I know that Chief Justice Stevens called it a tax, but it's not a tax in the traditional way

It's actually Chief Justice Roberts, but, honest mistake. Of course it's not a tax 'in the traditional way'. It was intended to be a penalty enforceable under the Commerce Clause. Roberts couldn't find a Constitutional case to fit that definition so he changed the definition of the penalty as a tax, which is something that congress has the power to enact. A tariff is a de facto tax even if it's not 'in the traditional way'. Doesn't change the fact that it's a tax. The only reason the court found the individual mandate to be Constitutional was to call it a tax.

... if it was, we would have always called car insurance a tax, and we don't.

    #298 | POSTED BY PINCHALOAF

Health insurance isn't a tax. The penalty for not purchasing it is a tax. Car insurance is different. For starters, the laws governing it are handled at a state level. More importantly, those who don't have a car are not subjected to a penalty tax for not purchasing car insurance.

The Supreme Court said it's legal, so the answer to whether it's a tax or a penalty is:
It's a penalty, assessed on your taxes (which gives a lot of people an "out," for example if they don't make enough to need to file a tax return in the first place.)

It's not a tax like a regular tax: "The ACA forbids levies, liens, and criminal prosecution related to collection of the shared responsibility (individual mandate) penalty." www.healthinsurance.org

Trump was still incoherent on most of the policy questions, going off on tangents, point his finger rather than explaining his positions (if he actually has them).

All that will be remembered from this debate was Trump refusing to say he'd accept the outcome of the election and "that nasty woman," which will both lose him any additional votes his people were hoping he'd get out of tonight.

She baited him in the debate into saying, "Such a nasty woman!".

When she was answering a question on saving Social Security and Medicare no less:

Donald Trump interrupted Hillary Clinton to call her a "nasty woman" after Clinton landed a jab about Trump's tax avoidance during the final presidential debate Wednesday.

"My Social Security contribution will go up, as will Donald's -- assuming he can't find a way to get out of it," Clinton joked in response to a question about entitlement reform.

    The Donald lost.

    Interesting points:

I never heard Hillary deny the truth of the leaked emails, rather she blamed Russian espionage. In other words she's admits getting busted but it shouldn't count because of Russia
She never answered the question about all the women coming forward accusing her husband of rape.

Two things that finished the Donald off:

He can't say he'll accept the election results.
"she's a nasty woman"It makes Donald appear that he doesn't have the temperament to serve as President.

    Russian espionage? Hillaryous.

As the FBI found, Hillary was extremely careless with the unsecured server she kept in her basement. Tons of people without proper clearances had access to her server. She didn't even require a password to log herself in.

Hillary has to blame herself first. She was extremely careless in guarding her emails and by extension, the emails of those with whom she communicated.

The issue of accepting the results of the election will serve Trump well over the next few weeks.

Just in the last 48 hours we have learned from Campaign Chairman Podesta himself that the campaign advocates for non-citizens to use drivers licenses to gain access to vote on election day.

    #454 | Posted by DixvilleNotch at 2016-10-20 02:22 AM | Reply

We've learned that the Hillary campaign keeps the names of dead people who are still on the voter rolls to use the names in battleground states to enable operatives to vote multiple times.

We've learned the Hillary campaign buses operatives across state lines to vote under the names of dead people who are still on the voter rolls.

We've learned from Hillary campaign operatives that the campaign pays them to incite violence at Trump rallies in various cities such as Chicago while pretending to be Bernie Sanders supporters.

We've learned that a Hillary campaign operative that has visited the White House 324 times admits to hiring homeless and mentally disabled individuals to carry out the campaign's dirty work.

Yes, let's talk a few more weeks about the validity and legality of the Hillary campaign's tactics for getting out the vote.

Learn a new tune already. Trump is losing badly among blacks, Hispanics, women, gays, and Jews and not doing well enough with the rest to make up the difference. His campaign has been a gaffe-ridden, scandal-rocked travesty. The man has gotten into public feuds wth beauty queens, prominent members of his own party, the family of a dead US marine, and, no lie, the Pope. He is, in a word, a terrible candidate deservedly losing this election all on his own, no conspiracy required. Before anyone goes all 'Al Gore 2000,' as right wing sites are already trotting out as their counter to previous presidential elections being challenged; the election hasn't even been held yet!

And Florida had an automatic recount when the initial results were within triple digit numbers of votes.

Another line the right are trotting out is about 'media bias': Trump got hundreds of millions of dollars of free publicity from every media outlet in America. HE chose to restrict himself to FoxNews, refusing to be interviewed or appear on any other TV outlets.

Trump sunk his own campaign. Will he man up and admit defeat? Based on his history, the answer is a resounding 'no.' His defeat will be strictly and entirely of his own making.

You can't learn much from the debates. The debates are rigged by a private entity with no official status that calls itself the Commission on Presidential Debates and transforms open debates among multiple candidates into exclusively bipartisan joint appearances with many large and fine points negotiated beforehand.

We also know the DNC primary was rigged in Hillary's favor. We also know that the networks rigged their coverage in Trump's favor in order to maximize revenue.

Actual governance of the United States is rigged. Congress plans to attempt to ram through a number of intensely unpopular measures just after the election, including a supplemental spending bill for more wars and including the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The hope is that most people will have tuned out after the election circus, and that most of them will forget what happened 2 or 4 years later.

Vladimir Putin proposed a ban on cyber "war" that was rejected by the United States. The United States pulled out of the ABM treaty, expanded NATO to Russia's border, built missile bases, arranged military "exercises," facilitated a Ukrainian coup, and pushed a string of hostile lies. There's no evidence that Russia shot down an airplane in Ukraine or invaded Ukraine or seized Crimea or plotted cyber attacks on the United States. But, if Russia helped to reveal flaws in U.S. democracy, they should be thanked. (David Swanson)

Also Trump doesn't seem to know much about how the three branches of government work. On the other hand, if, as he says, he intends to blow it up anyway (and appoint himself First Dictator), he probably feels there is no need to master the petty details.

5 years of investigations. Millions of dollars wasted. No charges. No "there" there.

I agree with the wasted money part. Leaking of primary sources has rendered the investigations meaningless. The uncovering of Paul Combetta aka Stonetear, and his "Oh ----, get the bleachbit" moment, along with the wikileaks emails showing the timeline of email retention policies, have done more investigation in about three months than the FBI did in five years.

If you want to continue to hang your hat on an investigation that has been made a farce once the primary sources have been revealed, that's completely up to you.

Okay DB here's a fact for you.

    From thefederalist.com

In her answer to a question about her views on gun rights, Clinton said she opposed the Supreme Court's Heller decision, which recognized the constitutional right for individuals to own and carry firearms, because it was about whether toddlers should have guns.

    Yes, she said that.

So what was the Heller case really about? It was about whether Dick Anthony Heller, a 66-year-old police officer, should be legally allowed to own and bear a personal firearm to defend himself and his family at home.

No mention of toddlers. Because the case wasn't about toddlers. It was about whether the District of Columbia's "total ban on handguns" -- the Supreme Court's characterization of the law at issue in the case -- was constitutional.

Trump was for intervening with Libya, but, of course to hear him tell it, he would have done it quickly, easily, surgically and effectively for humanitarian reasons:

    Trump in 2011:

"I can't believe what our country is doing," Trump said, according to a BuzzFeed transcript. "Gaddafi in Libya is killing thousands of people, nobody knows how bad it is, and we're sitting around we have soldiers all have the Middle East, and we're not bringing them in to stop this horrible carnage and that's what it is: It's a carnage."

    Trump continued.

"You talk about things that have happened in history; this could be one of the worst," Trump said. "Now we should go in, we should stop this guy, which would be very easy and very quick. We could do it surgically, stop him from doing it, and save these lives. This is absolutely nuts. We don't want to get involved and you're gonna end up with something like you've never seen before."

    And then ...

"But we have go in to save these lives; these people are being slaughtered like animals," Trump said. "It's horrible what's going on; it has to be stopped. We should do on a humanitarian basis, immediately go into Libya, knock this guy out very quickly, very surgically, very effectively, and save the lives."

Trump's lack of self-control allows Clinton to sweep the debates

The biggest news out of last night's debate is that Donald Trump will not commit to respect the outcome of the election on Nov. 8. "I will keep you in suspense," he said, gleefully offending elite sensibilities and disregarding America's democratic tradition.

But the more damaging impression that average voters will be left with from Las Vegas is Trump's total lack of self-discipline.

Most Americans want a president who can control his (or her) impulses. They may not volunteer "self-restraint" as a hallmark of good leadership, but people do not want someone with an irrepressible temper and unhealthy ego in control of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

Trump once again failed that test at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, squandering his last big chance to change the trajectory of a race that has moved away from him.

For the third debate in a row, the Republican nominee was calm, cool and collected -- for the first 15 minutes. Then he let Hillary Clinton get under his skin.

That is untrue. What she clearly said was that while she agreed with the right of an individual to bear arms with reasonable regulations (which is the law and has been for decades), she disagreed with how the Supreme Court applied that right in Heller.

In other words, she does not disagree that there is a constitutional right for individuals to own and carry firearms, but she does think that the proposed regulation at issue in Heller was reasonable and constitutional.

Wait for it: Trump and Clinton are supposed to trade jokes tonight at Dolan's Al Smith dinner

NEW YORK (RNS) -- This has been an unconventional election by almost any measure with both candidates garnering record high negatives from the voters.

But the Catholic Church likes nothing better than to stick with tradition, and so Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, and his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, will be headlining the glitzy Al Smith Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan Thursday night to trade jokes (hopefully) rather than barbs in a custom that goes back more than 70 years.

(The dinner will be aired live at 8:50 p.m. on C-SPAN.)

"Those who started the dinner 67 years ago believed that you can accomplish a lot more by inviting folks of different political loyalties to an uplifting evening, rather than in closing the door to them," Dolan wrote at the time.

He added that he believed he was also following the example of Jesus, "who was blistered by his critics for dining with those some considered sinners; and by the recognition that, if I only sat down with people who agreed with me, and I with them, or with those who were saints, I'd be taking all my meals alone."

    From thefederalist.com

In her answer to a question about her views on gun rights, Clinton said she opposed the Supreme Court's Heller decision, which recognized the constitutional right for individuals to own and carry firearms, because it was about whether toddlers should have guns.

    Yes, she said that.

    No, she did not.

"What the District of Columbia was trying to do was to protect toddlers from guns," Clinton said.

And it was indeed one of the things that DC was trying to do (though not the only thing).

City leaders did specifically cite the danger posed to children in trying to keep in place gun regulations, but the regulations were also a widespread ban on unregistered weapons, not just gun safety measures. Child safety wasn't the sole topic cited by defenders of the city's gun control ordinance, and the Heller decision dealt with a much broader issue than protecting toddlers from firearm deaths or injuries.

Like I said, you guys would not know a FACT if it reached up and grabbed you by the -----.

After the fact, those two allies reneged on their promise to follow-up to help the newly, twice democratically elected moderate government to get on their feet."

Let's spot the things that aren't true:

Genocide: You are using this word incorrectly for dramatic effect. Blowing up one city would not be "genocide". A massacre? Yes. Genocide? No. The bombings of Hiroshima and Dresdin were not "genocide" either. We've allowed much worse things to happen especially than allowing the destruction of a jihadi hotspot. We usually blow those up ourselves.

Limited air cover: This was a lie at the time and you are a liar for repeating it now. We were told that we would be involved in stopping the attack on Benghazi only. That isn't what happened. The US proceeded to arm jiahdis in Libya and to help them conquer territorty. That is more than just air cover. And we proceeded to bomb Libyan cities including Tripoli, again more than just air cover.

The result of this campaign based on untrue claims of genocide and lies about limited involvement has been an unmitigated disaster.

You can finger point at the Euros all you want but only an idiot would have thought they were going to send ground forces into Libya considering they couldn't even bomb Libya without our being involved and supplying the bombs.

This is the kind of violent, misleading, beneficial to our worst enemies leadership we can expect from Clinton. Not looking forward to it.

Her statement is partially true because there is not enough time in a debate to get into the weeds.

But, what she said is absolutely true.

    from the same link:

"In their appeal to the Supreme Court, the city government filed a petition with the court specifically citing the dangers posed to children if the gun ban was lifted."

The Council banned handguns in a targeted effort to prevent needless death and injury
from that class of weapons. Among other things, the District responded to the chilling
regularity with which handguns were taking the lives of children: of the "[c]lose to 3,000 accidental deaths . . . caused by firearms" annually, the Council found, "1/4 of the victims are under 14 years of age."

There was no citation of specific data pointing to children, toddler was never mentioned. As i said it was a stupid emotional call, not a part of the case itself, hence she lies and politifact tries again to cover for her. Come on, do you really believe that if trump said something that dumb they would try so hard to justify it?
You think they would run the mental gymnastics to make a footnote, at best, what they were trying to do?

    That is asinine.

There was no citation of specific data pointing to children,

Well, other than this, of course, from the actual petition.

Among other things, the District responded to the chilling regularity with which handguns were taking the lives of children: of the "[c]lose to 3,000 accidental deaths . . . caused by firearms" annually, the Council found, "1/4 of the victims are under 14 years of age."

As i said it was a stupid emotional call,

You mean kinda like saying Hillary would allow doctors to "rip a baby out of the womb days before (or even the day of) it's birth"?

I will answer myself. No. It was not even close to that.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, Hillary plans to flip flop on TPP to avoid the wrath of AFSCME and SEIU, until she is elected:

    From:re47@hillaryclinton.com To: jsullivan@hillaryclinton.com Date: 2015-10-03 13:44 Subject: Re: TPP & Glass Steagall

TPP would be lethal with labor. We'd loose afscme and likely seiu as well.

Jake, I had to get off that call before it ended, and I also didn't want to intrude in that group. But FWIW, my view would be:

    1. * She has to be for TPP*. She called it the "gold standard" of trade agreements. I think opposing that would be a huge flip flop. She can say that as President she would work to change it. She can say that it can be better. But I think she should support it.

    2. *She should move 95% to Warren on Glass Steagall.* I think you can avoid the flip flop, but survive the Warren primary by saying: "Of course I wouldn't bring back Glass Steagall -- that's a law written 80 years ago before we had anything like the current banking system. But I agree with Sen. Warren that -- given the ongoing misconduct in the banking industry -- we need to erect a wall between banking and non-banking activities. If I became President, I would sit down with her and develop a 21st century version of Glass Steagall that provides sound separation between basic banking and riskier activities, but still keeps America's financial institution's competitive."

    Just my view, FWIW. Ron

The MOU at issue in item #2 above is most likely a Memorandum of Understanding within the Clinton Foundation in which Podesta tries to bury what Doug Band calls "at least 500 examples" of the Clintons' conflicts of interest:

Writing to Podesta about to his conflict-of-interest agreement, Band noted that Clinton is not bound to such an agreement. "Wjc does not have to sign such a document even though he is personally paid by 3 cgi sponsors, gets many expensive gifts from them, some that are at home etc," Band wrote. "I could add 500 different examples of things like this," he added.

Hillary signed the Memorandum of Understanding in 2008, promising that she would not have even the appearance of a conflict of interest between her job as Secretary of State and her pay-for-play scheme at the Clinton Foundation.

I think Foval and Creamer, the Clinton Campaign Filth Team, has them. Haven't they been bringing them to the White House over the course of Creamer's 340 visits to the White House and 45 meetings with President Obama.

I think Creamer may be "stepping back" from Hillary's campaign in order to work on the release:

Creamer issued a statement after the first two O'Keefe videos that he was "stepping back" from his "responsibilities working with the campaign." Interim DNC Chairman Donna Brazile tried to put distance between the DNC and Democracy Partners in a statement by saying, "the practices described in the video by this temporary regional sub-contractor do not in any way comport with our long standing policies on organizing events."

Maybe Creamer has been relaying the contents to the White House by phone. I understand Creamer will be releasing hours and hours of recorded phone calls with the White House soon.

    #566 | Posted by Nuke_Gently

    Ummm... No there is not.

The total U.S. population age 16 and over is at least 243 million. Subtracting the nearly 156 million Americans in the labor force in June 2013 -- that is, those who were either working or looking for work -- leaves 87 million Americans, which is close to 90 million.

However, the 90 million number is padded, since this number includes a lot of Americans who wouldn't be expected to be working. Specifically:

    • People age 16 to 17, who likely are in high school: 9 million

    • People who are enrolled in either two- or four-year colleges: 21 million

    • People age 65 and older, who have reached retirement age: 40 million people

    www.politifact.com

That leaves 20 million (CHECK MY MATH VERN!)

20 million does not equal 90 million.

Not Bigly and not even Smally!
