Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

There's nothing wrong with loving your hometown team, but putting that iconography into context is important when you're remembering what it means to celebrate. A recent poster from the National Congress of Indians sheds greater light on this issue. Simply put, they argue that having a Cleveland Indians logo is like having a "New York Jews" or "San Francisco Chinamen," mascots that would be blatantly offensive.

What a crock of smelly brown stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You could say the same about ANY team logo. Vikings, Packers, Raiders, there is no end to the stoopid list anyone could come up with. Get a $$$$$$$ life!

#1 How is the Jets logo offensive? I mean, other than to NYC.

I have no issues with the Boston Irishmen. Give the logo an obvious drunken stupor look, I'd think it's hysterical. I'm part Irish btw.

FTA:

The truth is this: Today, the only ethnic or racial iconography/imagery being used for team mascots in the United States is done at the expense of Native people, and that reality shows the depths to which we have forgotten about the mass genocide that took place on the land we occupy, and how profoundly we dehumanize the cultures of Native people.

Gee SNIPER, maybe you could link to the American historical occurrences of packers, raiders, and vikings being slaughtered through genocide, that ultimately became the cultural cleansing of the early United States.

Oh great.

First they came for the Indian mascots and I didn't speak up, because my mascot wasn't an Indian...
[...]
[...]
Then they came for the Buccaneers' mascot and I had no one left to speak out for my mascot.

Next, they will come for the UAB Blazers mascot because their green firebreathing dragon is reminiscent of "Puff the Magic Dragon" and psychedelic culture.

Here's a simple concept:
Don't use other human beings as your mascot.
If you can't figure out why that could easily be seen as offensive, you must be a right-winger.

Only a left-winger gets his panties knotted over a team mascot. Most people just don't care because it's not important.

Bomani Jones Wore 'Caucasians' Shirt On ESPN And White People Flipped Out

ESPN host Bomani Jones put on a masterclass in starting a discussion about racism in sports Thursday.

And all he did was wear a T-shirt that had white people all hot and bothered.

Jones, host of "The Right Time," was filling in on "The Mike and Mike Show" when he wore a "Caucasians" shirt, which is a spoof of Chief Wahoo, the Cleveland Indians mascot and a caricature of a Native American.

He noted that the tee is just like the Indians' jersey, though the team's name has been replaced with "Caucasians." The mascot was also given paler skin with a dollar sign replacing the feather.

"To have a problem with a logo of this would be to have a problem with the Indians," Jones said. "But if you're quiet about the Indians and now you've got something to say about my shirt, I think it's time for introspection."

The shirt generated plenty of chatter on social media, with some opposing Jones' wardrobe choice, while others applauded him.

Fire breathing dragons experienced genocide on American soil? No? Then I don't think the Drexel University Dragons have to worry about liberals coming for their mascot.

Most [i.e., a majority of] people just don't care because it's not important.

So because a minority of people take issue with this, it should be ignored? Why? Because we live in a "democracy"? HAHAHA!

According to oral history folklore, fire breathing dragons experienced widespread extinction due to the selfish actions of Orientals during the Mythological Ages.

The very least Michelle Obama can do during her "Fight FatKids!" campaign of health awareness is to acknowledge The Fightin' Okra mascot of Delta State University.

"The Fightin' Okra!" Because how can you defeat a fighting fruit?

#9, I didn't understand the uproar of people #triggered by the "Caucasians" team shirt. The shirt looked good and I understood the comparative angle he was taking on the issue. I am left to assume that the folks who complained were "the basement dwelling nerd virgins" who work for CTR as a side-gig.

Aren't the Pittsburgh Steelers essentially "The Caucasians" in team form?

Selfish actions? Did dragons require opium to survive?

The American Indians were not slaughtered through genocide. The Jews were. All things are offensive to some people. Someone got offended when I said our young men are a bunch of girlie men. I didn't include women.......

Its a bit much to claim that "white people flipped out". A few people on Twitter made comments.

You could do almost anything on TV and get negative Twitter comments about it. That hardly equates to an entire race "flpping out".

The sample tweets they posted in the article were rather tame too.

IMO, the claim HuffPo made was so exagerated as to be disingenuous.

False:

The form of colonialism that the Indigenous peoples of North America have experienced was modern from the beginning: the expansion of European corporations, backed by government armies, into foreign areas, with subsequent expropriation of lands and resources. Settler colonialism requires a genocidal policy. Native nations and communities, while struggling to maintain fundamental values and collectivity, have from the beginning resisted modern colonialism using both defensive and offensive techniques, including the modern forms of armed resistance of national liberation movements and what now is called terrorism. In every instance they have fought and continue to fight for survival as peoples. The objective of US authorities was to terminate their existence as peoples -- not as random individuals. This is the very definition of modern genocide.

I remember the Caucasians jersey... That was awesome. I went online to see if I could buy one.

That's because I'm not offended by silliness. Must be the Irish in me, I'm sure we've all seen this kicking around FB.

"Irish protesting for the removal of Lucky Charms leprechaun image because it's offensive. Just kidding, the Irish aren't offended by Jack --- because they're not p*ssies."

Really? So you speak for ALL right wingers and ALL left wingers now. That is an awesome responsibility you have shouldered.

I know plenty of rightwingers that got their panties in a tight ass crack wad over changing a high school mascot from "Redskins" to "Legends".

There is it again!
We all just need to "man up" and get over any perceived insult coming from sports mascots, right?
Thanks to you right-wingers for so aptly demonstrating the toxic culture of what it means to "man up."
You're doing a much better job here than in the "Man up" thread itself,
