Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, October 11, 2016

Jamelle Bouie, Slate: By threatening to jail his opponent, Donald Trump promised to rip up the foundations of liberal democracy. Historians, commentators, and "Never Trump" Republicans quickly grasped the weight of his statement. "Only time I've ever heard a candidate threatening to jail his opponent was in the Congo. He lost and was later convicted of war crimes," tweeted former Mitt Romney campaign manager Stuart Stevens. On television, CBS's Bob Schieffer said Trump's threat reminded him of a "banana republic." And University of Virginia historian Nicole Hemmer stressed that this was a "breathtaking violation of our democratic tradition." She's right. The United States is not a perfect democracy. But one thing we can say is that, in America, political opponents are just that: political opponents. They aren't hounded and they aren't imprisoned. It isn't a crime to be on the other side of an election. To go down that road is to take a shortcut to despotism and repression.

There's no charitable read here, or at least not one that respects the rules and structure of the English language. Trump's meaning is plain. Should he win the Oval Office, he will use his authority vis-a-vis the Justice Department to launch an investigation of his rival in the presidential election. And because he believes Clinton uniquely perfidious, this investigation would lead to her prosecution, conviction, and imprisonment. As he said, she would be in jail.

American democracy needs two healthy parties, at least, to survive and to thrive. Sunday showed we have just one.

Trump's a hateful man. I'll watch for more Republicn defections today. Those who stick with him are still studying the science behind pipe bombs.

"Off with their heads!" shrieked the Prince of Tarts, as he huffed and puffed and blew himself down, ever deeper into the rabbit hole where he was revealed to be mad as a hatter.

(With apologies to Lewis Carroll.)

Trump should also be mindful of this:

If denouncing a woman over her husband's adultery is an effective way to appeal to female voters, focus groups have somehow failed to detect that. And if Trump wants to drag Clinton into the briar patch of the nineties, well, after fifteen years of war, as well as an economic collapse followed by a slow recovery, he might remind Americans that the nineties weren't so bad. They probably don't want a reprise of grunge and Tamagotchi, but peace and prosperity was nice. They almost certainly don't want to relive the Javert-like investigation by special prosecutor Ken Starr, who, speaking of beyond belief, recently lost his job as Baylor's president for turning a blind eye to sexual misconduct.

(as the article also points out, after years of war and a slow recovery from the recession, he'll remind people how good the 90's were for most Americans under Bill Clinton)

By threatening to jail his opponent, Donald Trump promised to rip up the foundations of liberal democracy.

While that certainly is a major consideration, there is a more practical reason why presidents don't jail the opposition: they are term limited and there is no guarantee that their party will win the next election. If the opposition party wins, its a safe bet that the outgoing president and their staff will do jail time.

Coincidentally, Trump also brags how he resembles a banana wine stopper. (Google it if you have to.)

These antics will be continued in the US Congress if HRC is elected, but the work will be promulgated by the dork Jason Chaffetz and others of his ilk, who will snipe and snip at the new president over all sorts of high crimes, real or (all, in this case) imagined...
