How could a tender, juicy, hand-rubbed pork shoulder slow cooked over hardwood coals for 12 hours be offensive?

Because Academia seems to attract a certain kind of lazy brain. In certain contexts the word "American" can be used in such a way as to be exclusionary. Therefore, it is a bad word to certain types of simple thinkers.

Heaven forbid we expect a college administrator to actually think about how the word was being used and figure out that it was simply describing the type of food being served.

Colleges do kids a favor with this kind of thing.
The grown-up world is full of stupid hoops you have to jump through and you don't get to question.
And even if you're right, it doesn't matter.
Like if you work at Wells Fargo and you blow the whistle on their ridiculous shenanigans, your career is cut short.

Only if Bernie said it, or ate some, during the primaries.

Ever watch "Irish People try American BBQ" on Youtube. Pretty funny. I think the one woman has a foodgasm.
