The director and Academy Award winning screenwriter Curtis Hanson was found unresponsive in his home Tuesday and has died. He was 71. Hanson won an Oscar for the screenplay of L.A. Confidential and also directed the film. He directed 17 movies in total, including the Eminem biopic 8 Mile, Wall Street docudrama Too Big to Fail and B-movie classic Bad Influence. Sad news. Bad Influence is my favorite B-movie of all time. It managed that mixture of dumb and great that makes me watch it again every time I catch a scene while channel surfing. I like the movie so much I bought an early draft of the screenplay while visiting Hollywood. It confirmed a theory I had that Rob Lowe's character was supposed to be the Devil. The movie only hints at this but the early script made it obvious.

L.A. Confidential is another favorite, though this time I'd just call it great and leave off dumb. Russell Crowe's hot-heated cop is a great character.

I've only seen the astonishing LA Confidential, insanely lost Best Picture Oscar to wretched The English Patient, and the ridiculous but fairly enjoyable A Knight's Tale. RIP

A mighty fine movie, an homage to film noir classics. There was even a cut-nose scene, a subtle nod to "Chinatown," itself a delicious throwback to vintage noir.

If Hollywood wants to save itself, it should take note from this flick as opposed to another -yawn- superhero 2.0 reboot and blowing up stuffs...
