DEVELOPING: A U.S. Air Force U-2 spy plane crashed in northern California Tuesday but both pilots ejected, military officials confirmed.

The aircraft crashed in Sutter County. The conditions of the pilots were unclear.

The U-2 was from the 9th Reconnaissance Wing stationed at nearby Beale Air Force Base, roughly 40 miles north of Sacramento.

According to Hillary and her fanclub, the U2 plane crashing is a result of Russian aggression.

The U-2 airframe is over 60 years old, it is incredible that these things are still flying. They were to be replaced by RQ-4 Global Hawks, but due to Defense cutbacks in 2012 their deployment was delayed until after Obama leaves office (the RQ-4 Global Hawks cost $176M apiece.) The entire U-2 fleet has been rebuilt, upgraded and refurbished over the years, but the actual airframe itself can be reinforced but not replaced.

It's only a matter of time before the U-2s, B-52s and F-4's start falling apart from within, steel built in the 50's-70's has only a limited functional life.

They are very challenging to fly well, but he got shot down because incompetent planners sent him over a route used the week before, the missile batteries were waiting on him, and the ECM package acted as a homing beacon.

Incidentally, we lost an F-117 to the same mistake in Serbia, flying an identical route on a pattern, and a clever SAM commander figured it out.

and nowadays it's the TR-1, not a U-2 anymore.

So WTF were they spying on in California?

I think the U-2 is a single seater.

It is NewsWorthy to read that the US military deploys aircraft to spy on the slums of California.

Reformed one - "they" have cell tower emulating circling cessnas for the locals.

They're not spying on Cali. U-2/TR-1 flights have been training out of Beale for around 50 years. The weather is ideal, and it's close enough to test ranges and training areas in Nevada.
