Vladimir Putin raised the spectre of nuclear war with the West on Friday as he defied international condemnation over his decision to send thousands of Russian troops and heavy armour into Ukraine. Accused by Europe and Nato of launching a full-scale invasion of eastern Ukraine, the Russian leader boasted to a group of Russian youngsters that "It's best not to mess with us." In language not seen since the height of the Cold War, he told his audience: "Thank God, I think no one is thinking of unleashing a large-scale conflict with Russia. I want to remind you that Russia is one of the leading nuclear powers."

Putin's comments, made during a visit to a pro-Kremlin youth camp on the banks of a lake outside Moscow, will horrify Western governments as they try to bring Russia into check. Even during the height of Cold War hostilities, few Kremlin leaders ever resorted to the direct mentions of Russia's nuclear arsenal.

"On Friday, Poland accused Russia of waging a full-scale "war" in eastern Ukraine, while Germany warned that the conflict was spiralling "out of control".

Speaking after a special emergency summit to discuss the crisis, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Nato secretary general, said Russia could no longer pretend that it did not have "direct" involvement in the conflict.

Diplomatic sources have told the Daily Telegraph that Ukraine will ask for a package of "non-lethal" aid including thousands of set of new uniforms, helmets, body armour and communications gear. Ukrainian defence chiefs also want access to sophisticated US and Nato satellite images of Russian troop positions.

However, while Ukraine's prime minister, Arseny Yatseniuk said on Friday that Ukraine would now seek to join Nato, sources within the organisation said that it would be unlikely happen. Any such move would oblige Nato to come to Ukraine's immediate defence against Russia.

A Nato source said: "Ukraine is not an ally. Nato may respect Ukraine's decision if it seeks membership but the Alliance is not going to accelerate in that direction."

I ponder yet wonder if those advocating for war against Russia realize that Russia has NUKES. I wonder yet ponder if they realize how foolish it would also be economically for us if we engaged Putin in a war. AGCO just laid off people at their manufacturing plant in part because of Russia. Our Country does a lot of business with Russia. You can say goodbye to that if US vs Russia occurs. You can also say goodbye to our space missions too.

Letting Ukraine into NATO would be insane. Entangling alliances and all that.

The West knows it can no longer bully Russia and China with physical might so it is involved in financial warfare arena instead. It won't work. The global forces are now in play where the West will no longer intimidate and dominate the rest of the globe. It's only a matter of time. Then when you have the mainstream economist Jared Bernstein make a remark that the reserve currency of the U.S. has been a recent negative for the U.S., you know even the maroooons in the mainstream are finally catching up in their thinking with the underground future thought machine. Putin is just sending the Washington neocons and their democratic support machine with a message. He knows the game well.

Putin seems to forget how much of his country is covered with feet of snow for multiple months and that much of their tech is leftover from the Soviet Union.

Whenever did the United States think that? I've been around a long time and I don't remember that ever being the case. Does MAD mean anything to you Matsop? That has been the situation since before I was born.

Our treasonous game playing idiots in Congress that support the USA invading the country of its choosing are clueless to the fact that Russia is not Libya or Syria or Iraq or Afghanistan.

War with Russia will be unforgiving.. Israel'should fight that war not the USA.

Well you were warned.
This is what the Obama disarmament treaty's have created.
This treaty should be scrapped.

We now don't have enough warheads to protect ourselves and have no working missile defense system.

The senior levels of the political leadership of the Russian government is referring to the government of the Ukraine as "CIA sponsored Nazis". That is doubtful, but if it is true, we got them for a bargain. But that is what a group of thugs will say immediately before an invasion. Have not doubt, Putin is a thug, a thief,(he stole millions in the early days of the RF in the ST.Petersburg in the early 90s), a murderer-he was a LtC. in the KGB, you do not get that far in that organization without making your bones. Learn a little about that organization, they had much more to do with the Mafia than Marx. His policies of murder, extortion, theft and intimidation have only become more sever as he has centralized power around himself. This tragedy has nothing to do with the USA, it does have everything to do with V. Putin.

I think you might need to lay off those whiskey sours before you log on to the DR. I seem to remember it was the #1 "leftie" who removed missiles in Poland and others to please Pooty Poot and who promised Pooty Poot he'd be more flexible. I also remember another iconic lefty pressing some stupid "reset" button for Russia with a big smile. Even "rightie" Romney warned Obummus Maximus about Russia and Pooty Poot's threat to peace during the last debates. You see, it is the "lefties" who are smooching Pooty Poot's pooter, not "righties."

"...and have no working missile defense system."

Well, that part is true enough, since you never did.

excerpt:

"..thanks to the Nuland's foul-mouthed indiscretion, the truth is out. Washington, from her own admission, is acting like an agent provocateur in Ukraine's political turmoil. That is an illegal breach of international rules of sovereignty. Nuland finishes her phone call like a gangster ordering a hit on a rival, referring to incompetent European interference in Ukraine with disdain - "F...k the EU."

What we are witnessing here is the real, ugly face of American government and its uncouth contempt for international law and norms.
