Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, August 29, 2014

Alexandra Petri, Washington Post: If you were wondering whether everything is a lie, the answer is: yes. Everything is a lie. Hello Kitty is not a kitty. I repeat: Hello Kitty is not a kitty. According to Sanrio, Hello Kitty -- whom you have seen on literally every consumer product at an increasing rate over the past 40 years -- is in fact a human child. Sanrio, Kitty's manufacturer, corrected the curator of an LA exhibit on this ubiquitous icon when she tried to label Hello Kitty a cat, according to the LA Times. Curator and Hello Kitty expert Christine Yano said the company informed her that "Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty."

"Hello Kitty was done in the motif of a cat. It's going too far to say that Hello Kitty is not a cat. Hello Kitty is a personification of a cat."

This is not news. Drudge Retort members corrected L.A. Times editors on this matter when it was presented as news by Carolina A. Miranda. Although it looks like news, it is simply a caricature of the news which belongs on the pages of the Onion or Abdulla el Absurdado.

In Murica, she's a cat. Just like Mickey is a mouse and Woody is a woodpecker and Bugs is a bunny.

If Pluto is a dog, what is Goofy?

#9 | Posted by rcade at 2014-08-29 10:42 AM | Reply | Flag:

I don't know many girls with pointy ears on top of their heads and obvious whiskers growing from their noses.

Maybe it is a Miami (Hispanic) thing, but many girls here actually DO have whiskers growing from their noses. EW!

Googled it and found this mildly racist explanation of Goofy:

"In a memo written in 1934, Disney animator Art Babbitt told all. "Think of the Goof as a composite of an everlasting optimist, a gullible Good Samaritan, a half-wit, a shiftless, good-natured colored boy and a hick," he told his staff. "His brain is rather vapoury. He laughs at his own jokes, because he can't understand any others. He is very courteous and apologetic and his faux pas embarrass him, but he tries to laugh off his errors. He talks to himself because it is easier for him to know what he is thinking if he hears it first.""

It isn't a hijack per say Dead. It is a fair question in light of this thread.

If Hello Kitty isn't a cat, what is Goofy?

@ SULLY

Odd, at least once back in the day Goofy was shown as having a white wife and a white son.

How many human little girls have you seen who have pointed cat ears growing out of the top of their head? "Hello Kitty" is a cartoon depiction of a young female kitty cat. End of story.

My friend's girlfriend & her were looking for HK in an Asian shop. The lady said they were out of a coin purse they kept in stock. "You want Heh-row Kitty? I save one for you. You come back."
