Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, August 31, 2014

Vice News obtained the complete inventory of military leftovers secured since 2007 by the Ferguson, Missouri, police department under the Pentagon Defense Logistics Agency 1033 program. Nothing on the list matched up with the militarized equipment police deployed during the protests. What Ferguson did receive from the DLA were non-tactical items like laptop computers, utility trucks, a generator, and mittens for "extreme cold weather." The obvious question: Where did Ferguson police get the military equipment it allegedly used during the protests, and how did the department purchase it? When Vice posed the question to the Ferguson Police Department, an officer hung up the phone on us. Three subsequent calls back resulted in the same response.

Also the Ferguson police department only had 55 officers. There were hundreds of riot police on the streets those first few nights.

Another good question to ask them: Who were all those riot police and where did they come from?

From what I remember they were St. Louis County officers. Then I think the State took over and relieved the county police. Most of the heavy equipment was probably from the county police.

The videos of the militarized police has caused me to wonder about recruitment of new police officers.

Are those videos causing a shift in the people who are applying to become police officers?

Is there a shift in candidates away from those who want to "protect and serve" towards those who want to "intimidate and control"?

Are the videos of the militarized police creating a new paradigm of policing, a paradigm that will not change easily or quickly?

It's not the videos. It's george w bush's iraq war. That's where most of these men went to become monsters. They were allowed to kick in doors, shoot first and ask questions later, and not be held responsible for their actions. They lost their humanity. What did you think would happen when they returned home and became cops?

The police in some places *are* the criminals.

You mean the culture of winner take-all-capitalism, where life is so bad for the have-nots that they have nothing to lose?

" bought with all the "counter-terrorism" money DHS handed out like candy post-911."

Yep. Where's the politician with the balls to call for abolishing DHS? He or she has my vote.

Yes, I would expect them to wear underwear.
I would hope everybody, rioter and cop alike, is wearing underwear.
What a stupid question.
