Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, August 27, 2014

Cal State San Marcos last Wednesday was stormed by law enforcement and placed on lockdown for more than 30 minutes after reports of a suspicious person armed with a gun on campus. After holding the man at gunpoint, cops learned it was only an umbrella. Bill Craig, who has been a staff member at the university for 17 years, was walking with his umbrella on campus that morning because of the rain. "I guess you always think that when someone's pointing a gun at you, you're really going to freak out but I think I was just more focused on doing exactly what the officer said," Craig told 10News.

Easy mistake.
The umbrella looked like a car antenna.

If it had been a poncho, they would have no option but to take him out.

"hoard of heavily armed cops"

Okay, pretty sure this is wrong. Should be "horde".
They may have gotten heavily armed from the hoard of weapons they had hoarded away, but the cops themselves comprise a horde.

True? False? Should I update my archaic OED?

The umbrella was reported to look like a gun, not a weapon of mass destruction...

A car antenna is a weapon of mass reception.

For persons of color:
"Do not raise your arms in surrender. We repeat..DO NOT RAISE YOUR ARMS!"

And if you look at the picture, you'ii see that it took at least 9 heavily armed police officers to stop and question this guy and you'll also note that while they must have gotten to a point where they had ascertained exactly what it was that he was carrying yet at least 3 of the officers were still aiming their M-16's at something or someone.

Have you ever watched the TV show "Cops" when a K-9 unit is filmed? The dog is always barking and jumping at the suspect. The look on the dogs face says, "Let me bite him, I want to bite him!" Cops in a situation where they might get to shoot someone are the same.

"...at least 3 of the officers were still aiming their M-16's at something or someone."

Looks like the camera crew was the "something or someone".

I want to know about the detail the two cops were on who were dressed in cargo shorts and tee shirts. Obviously the Sheriff's Deputies drive around with their tac vests and tactical helmets in their trunks. Were the two in shorts and tee shirts working undercover as students? That's what caught my eye.

Sorry for the cop haters out there, but with the number of mass shootings, and all the recent bad news, I'm thinking that people are overly sensitive to seeing something unusual, especially on a college campus. In Southern California, especially during a drought, the sight of an umbrella is very unusual. To somebody near sighted at a distance it might appear to be a gun. So, what are the cops supposed to do when they get this report? Treat it like nothing, and HOPE it's not another mass shooter with an AR-15? Or do what they did, and be happy that it was only an umbrella. Granted it made them look bad, but in the bigger picture it was a positive ending!

It's not "hating cops" to point out their overwhelming response to unverified information is what leads to people with cell phones getting shot by police, swatting, contagious fire incidents, and can make a completely safe situation very, very dangerous.

Maybe a little less guns up, a little more observation? Use all of their senses? You're not "running towards the shots" if no shots are being fired.

Umbrella-toting ISIS guys in San Marcos are easy to spot: they think it's going to rain so carry umbrellas. Silly ------------ doesn't rain in California...
