Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

A Texas mother driving with four young children in her car was terrified by police who pulled her over and placed her under arrest at gunpoint in a badly botched manhunt. Kametra Barbour expresses alarm on the dashcam video, telling Forney police, "Yes sir, what is wrong? My kids. They are 6 and 8 and 10, 9. What are we doing? Sir, what is going on? Oh my God. You will terrify my children." Police pulled over Barbour's car while investigating reports of a driver waving a gun out of his window.

Novapsyche writes on Daily Kos, "You'll note immediately that "beige or tan Toyota with four black males" does not precisely match 'burgundy red Nissan Maxima' with a woman & small children. Yet the arresting officer insisted to Barbour that they were looking for a car that matched the description of hers. He even said that the license plate matched. ...

"Most horrifyingly, Barbour's six-year-old son exited the car, walking toward the police with his hands above his head.

"In the wake of the Michael Brown killing, the image is mortifying."

"In a statement released Sunday, the Forney Police Department said officers had been pursuing a vehicle whose passengers were seen waving a gun from the windows. A 911 caller reportedly confused Barbour's car with the other vehicle, the statement went on to say, which explains why police stopped the law-abiding motorist with their firearms drawn."

Racism, obviously.

Driving While Black in the first degree

So people cant make mistakes with blacks anymore?

You better believe that "mistakes" by police are going to be under the microscope - and rightly so. Maybe a few good lawsuits will bring them to heel.

That wasn't a mistake, they took the time to handcuff a lady when they were looking for four men. They were using their "mistake" to run her license and see if there was anything else they could charge her with even though they had not probably cause to even pull her over. She should get a lawyer and sue their ass.

THIS is why cops hate audio/video of them performing their duties. Cops are only human. And being human, they screw up constantly. Without audio/video they can get away with lying about it.

The ones that hate video is a very small percentage and are the ones that need to be watched. The majority of LEO's want video. 99% of video of cops doing their jobs correctly are never seen. The 1% that make the news are the bad ones and should be hammered.

I've only had one case where the encounter with the client was video taped from beginning to end. The cops didn't do anything illegal or slimy in the video. They just came across as unprofessional and informal as hell. CHewing and spitting tobacco. Making jokes (non-racial) about the defendant when he was in the squad car. The value for me as a defense attorney was that the calm professional demeanor they tried to portray at jury trial was undermined by how they naturally were acting out at the scene. I can tell a jury a hundred times that how a cop presents in court is not how they act out in the field, and doesn't have nearly the impact as an audio video of the actual encounter.

That's not the recording of the 911 call.

"A 911 caller reportedly confused Barbour's car with the other vehicle, the statement went on to say, which explains why police stopped the law-abiding motorist with their firearms drawn."

That's the police explanation. It can be easily resolved by listening to a recording of the call. Either the caller screwed up or the police are idiots. If you have a recording of the call, please post it. I know it's much more fun to rush to judgement, but this is a really straight forward claim that will or won't be true.

Yeah, have to agree with you. Seems like bad info from the 911 dispatch to be honest. The stop was OK considering the report of a weapon and they did handle it well when the first kid came out.

Couldn't find a copy of the 911 recording but did find an interview from the people who made the call to 911.

Another article says that they never told them about the car turning off, that they told them (assuming 911) that they were stopping the wrong car.

Well, enlighten me please. What percentage of bad cop video minutes compared to the amount of minutes of cops doing their jobs correctly? Remember, every single instance that a cop's emergency equipment is on, it is being recorded on vehicles with video systems.

Clearly this was one of those ISIS transport vehicles that Gov. Perry has been warning against. They all should have been shot, before they behead another police officer, like the hundreds of beheaded cops already found in South Texas...

What a surprisingly inaccurate statement.

You do know that there are plenty of departments that do not have recording devices in their vehicles or on their person?

There was something recently in the news....can't remember what it was exactly but a from what I gather a lot could have been cleared up right away if that statement were true.

Loh Daniel does specify on vehicles with video systems. I am not sure it auto turns on when flashers come on or not but I can't think of a reason it wouldn't.

2 years ago I was driving my son to school. I noticed a cop car behind me and I had an expired license plate tab. When we got into the parking lot the cop pulled over to the side. I dropped my son off and the cop got back behind me. After I was 2 blocks away from the school he pulled me over.

He asked for my license, registration and proof of insurance and then said (paraphrased from memory): In case you are wondering why I followed you around like I did - I didn't want to pull you over with your kid in the car and I didn't want to pull you over on school property in plain view of everybody.

He was being courteous and respectful, which I appreciated.

#21: No biggie Lohocla. A properly installed digital video system is hardwired and only requires the activation of the emerg. equipment or the wireless mic. on the officers belt. It will record the previous 60 secs upon activation. The officer has no access to the stored video other than a playback feature, unless he has admin previlege to access the stored data. These newer systems are very versatile and secure.

Sorry to say there are counties and towns in Texas that are poor. They hire guys to be police and pay them what they can afford. Manny times it isn't enough to make a living. Some of the people who are in these cop shops are completely incompetent, or have personality problems. Many do it because they can afford to. It seems to be a pastime for some military retirees. Foley is well off the beaten path, it isn't close to I30 or any other interstate. It is a farming and bedroom community about half an hour outside of Dallas. The guy acting like a ass makes about $500 a week with some benes. I will bet that the city counsel made it abundantly clear to the entire police force, all sixteen of them, to pay close attention to black people coming into town who were not local. Keep the trash from Dallas out. Sounds mean, but criminals really do come in from Dallas to steal, rob, cook crank and do other nefarious things. Most criminals are black in this neck of the woods, and many come in from Dallas.

You could kind of tell that the cop on the passenger side felt a little foolish when the little boy came out of the car with his hands up. When the kid reached him, he just put his hand on the boy's head and kept walking past him. Didn't feel the need to pat him down or "secure" the kid. The one of the driver's side who was doing most of the talking seemed more gung-ho. I don't think you can tell from the video how long they left this woman cuffed. Would be interesting to know.

For the first time in at least 20 years I've been pulled over in recent weeks.

The first time was for changing lanes within 150' of a light. It was after dark on my way home from picking up food. I think the cop was trolling. He let me go on my way without a ticket since I hadn't been drinking or had anything in the car that wasn't legal. He was nice.

The second time was a few days ago for crossing a white line on the right. I got a ticket, and the cop was kind of a jerk, but since having reviewed the state motor vehicle code, there is no law against doing so on the right side, only on the left to pass. Think I'll fight that one in court. I'll be darned if I pay $63 for not breaking any laws on the books.

Cops come in all styles. Some are nice, some are bullies who wanted a badge just to be bullies.

sitzkrieg, are you sure about that? Forney only has about 15K people. The city gets it's revenue from a 2% sales tax, have you seen downtown Forney? Maybe they are raking in property tax, lots of rich white people have weekend pads there. BTW that is over $1500 per household- not counting the utilities, streets, and every other function of city government.

#46 | Posted by docnjo at 2014-08-27 03:48 PM | Reply | Flag:

yes, it's all public data. They're taxing almost a billion dollar in property. average household income in 2012 was $81k. Their are poor people in Forney, but the area is definitely not poor.
