Federal investigators in California have requested that BrightSource -- owner of thermal solar plants -- halt the construction of more (and bigger) plants until their impact on wildlife has been further investigated. Unlike many other solar plants, the Ivanpah plant does not generate energy using photovoltaic solar panels. Instead, it has more than 300,000 mirrors, each the size of a garage door. Together, they cover 1,416 hectares. Each mirror collects and reflects solar rays, focusing and concentrating solar energy from their entire surfaces upward onto three boiler towers, each looming up to 40 stories high. The solar energy heats the water inside the towers to produce steam, which turns turbines that generate enough electricity for 140,000 homes. The concentrated solar energy chars and incinerates the feathers of passing birds. BrightSource estimates about a thousand bird die this way every year, but an environmental group claims the real number is much higher.

They are cutting into oil and gas profits. You can't have that. Snark.

I charred a couple of birds on my Weber grill this past weekend.

move it out into space!?

i'd read about the array killing 2 birds per minute while the sun in position to hit its mirrors; but this new one is (or was) going to be in the flight path of eagles & other raptors. That is not going to help the cause of green energy.

i had not thought about building them in space; only catch i see there is space junk, a la "Gravity."

You have got to be kidding me - this was probably the best, most reliable, and renewable source out there. Unlike solar panels, power doesn't just immediately drop off because a lone cloud wandered by. At a certain point, one has to just draw the line at "we tried, the birds are still dumb."

This is renewable, doesn't pollute, and necessary. Conservatives might not recognize it, but probably our biggest national security issue isn't a bunch of raging middle eastern sheep herders - it's getting off foreign oil.

they should surround the solar array with wind turbines then surround the wind turbines with GMO-Monsanto-sprayed corn. that would keep the birds out.

"Together, they cover 1,416 hectares. "

In other words, they industrialize the desert for a poor EROEI.

I understand the oil industry kills millions of birds at a time.

Why aren't we stopping them?

Move the homeless underneath and let them eat the freshly cooked birds.

Two birds, one solar array.

Good, now maybe we can make some headroom with the solar farm we are trying to develop in Inyo Co.

This project was wrongheaded from the start.

Instead of using massive consolidated mirrored solar arrays or consolidated PVC arrays that inevitably require grid feedback ability, and industrial use of land, do environmental harm, the rooftop footprint etc of every home and building should be equipped with PV panels. It would provide to the building/dwelling some electrical redundancy and backup power feed back into the grid.

Sniper are you being obtuse or are you really so clueless that you don't understand oil spills kill birds?

Ah that environmentally friendly green energy. This has got to be worst time ever for liberals. They are seeing the catastrophe that their economic policies have caused the country. Massive unemployment, food prices through the roof, increasing wealth gap caused by their immigration policies. Hope and Change turned into "Hope not to be in Chains" with one illegal act after another. Lies flow but instead of getting by with them getting caught and the population catching in. Global Warming turning into the fraud it has always been. Race relations at a new low, not a single foreign policy success.

And now cooking the animals it says it is trying to protect . The one good thing about this is - since they have to eat crow at least it is cooked

FOSHAFFER birds die it's part of life.

But solar panels don't kill as many as oil spills.
