A 78-year-old Republican state senator in Iowa has been charged with third-degree sexual abuse for having sex with his 78-year-old wife at a care center when she was mentally incapable of consent. State Rep. Henry Rayhons is accused of the assault on his wife Donna on the evening of May 23 at the Concord Care Center in Garner. Donna Rayhon's roommate told authorities that she "heard noises indicating to her that" Henry Rayhons was having sex with his wife behind a curtain. Eight days earlier he was told she lacked the cognitive ability to consent to sex, a police complaint alleged.

A stunning paragraph from the USA Today story: "Elizabeth Barnhill, executive director of the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault, said it used to be legal for a man to have sex with his wife against her will. But the Iowa Legislature passed a bill about 25 years ago that defined such an act as a crime."

Sorry, but it's not only disgusting and wrong in my mind but where's the turn on? Is he mentally competent??? The woman isn't 'home'...

Also worth noting - Iowa is about 25 years ahead of many Islamic states in a significant fashion? Good to know...

I hope there was time after the assault to give her a morning after pill, and it was free.

I'm not sure that it's possible for a woman to ever have the cognitive ability to consent to sex by feminist standards.

Maybe she had a "Notebook" moment of lucidity and wanted to throw down.

The newlyweds Henry and Donna were just married in 2007. Just a slightly extended honeymoon IMHO. It could very well be that Donna wanted to have sex, on the day in question, no one can say she did not. Her nosy-jealous room-mate (cell-mate) should have just turned up the sound on her TV.

Viagra allows the elderly to enjoy the thrill of a date-rape charge; helps them feel young again.

She was 78 years old. I doubt very seriously there was a need for the morning after pill. I hope there is time next time you comment to actually read the story.

She wouldn't need it if it were a real rape.

Besides,a man can't rape his wife. The Bible says so.

Doesn't matter if she needs it or not. All women are entitled to free and unlimited birth control. It's in the ------ clause of the U.S. Constitution. On a less tongue in cheek note, if the only evidence is that her elderly room mate heard some sounds behind a curtain... well, that's pretty weak.

Well this is the first time I have heard of a politician raping his wife.

Usually it is the intern.

Seems like this guy did not read his personnel guide for being a politician.

It is absurd that this is made into a media issue. This isn't about a stranger raping a woman. It is about a long time married man having sex with his wife who was institutionalized because she became mentally impaired. According to the "authorities" that is illegal regardless of where it occurs. It is no wonder this country has lost respect for authority.

Did she complain? If she did then he did not do it right.

Good point!

I hereby consent to sex with my wife should I become unable to properly consent in the future.
